Chapter 13: Training Montage (Start humming Rocky IV Theme song music here)
The lesser demon snarled and clawed at its metal cage. Its bright red eyes glowed in the shadows, and its claws made of sharpened bone scraped and screeched against its cell.
The wizards of the Wizards’ Tower summoned demons and other beings for training purposes, and then stored them in metal cages located in the basement. This particular demon had been locked up, badly treated, and deprived of food for several weeks. The demon was angry and was hungry for Kargill’s blood, who was standing in front of the demon’s cage.
Dart and Teran just stared at Kargill like he was insane.
“You can't be serious,” they both said simultaneously.
“I am serious,” Kargill replied. “If you want to improve your magical abilities then you must train it through combat.” Kargill took his sword sheathe off his belt and tossed it onto the ground nearby. He then did the same thing to his staff.
*What are you doing?” Dart asked.
“You can't get better with magic by using a sword,” Kargill replied. “Release the demon Traiborn.” Wizard Traiborn jammed his staff into the ground and the door to the metal cage magically opened. The demon sprinted out of its cell and charged towards the unarmed Kargill.

The lesser demon charged towards Kargill and attacked at the elf with and overhead swing of its claws. Kargill nimbly sidestepped the attack and then held out his hands.
“Shadow barrage!” Kargill yelled. A sphere of pure dark energy and shadow materialized in the palms of his hands. The shadow barrage shot forward and had a direct hit on the demon face. As the attack of dark energy hit the demon, the sphere burst and cast the entire room into shadow.
The demon let out a roar and began thrashing around wildly. Dark and shadow energy covered the demon, blocking out his eyes. As the demon began to rip and tear at the thick layer of black that covered his eyes, Kargill prepared for another attack.
Ice began to form around Kargill’s hand and run up his forearm. The ice began to grow and form as Kargill prepared his attack.
“Ice barrage!” Kargill yelled. A beam of pure ice erupted from his arm and collided with the demon. The impact of the blow violently pushed the demon in the wall behind him. The ice ran up and down the demon’s body, making a thin cocoon which trapped it against the wall.
“Incredible!” Wizard Traiborn exclaimed.
“What is so incredible about an ice barrage?” Dart asked curiously.
“It was not the ice barrage itself that is so incredible; it is how he summoned it. Almost all mages use a staff or the air around them as the medium in which to summon their magical attacks, yet Kargill was able to use his own body as that medium! One can only imagine the limitless possibilities of being able to use your body in conjunction with the elements!”
“How hard is it to master this technique, sir?" Teran asked.
“Some mages spend their entire life to never truly master this, yet it has only been five years since Kargill showed up in Asgarnia on that bloody day. It seems like everyday his magical potency and prowess grows."

Kargill grabbed his arm in pain as the ice on his arm receded and disappeared. His forearm was bright red, and completely covered in blisters and bruises. The blood veins in Kargill’s arm had been partially frozen, and it hurt every time his heart beat. Kargill swore. Trying to summon ice magic through his arm had been a bad idea.
The demon let out another roar and broke free of its icy cocoon. It lowered its horns and charged at Kargill.
“Ice shield,” Kargill muttered. A dome of ice emerged from the ground and surrounded Kargill, shielding his body. The demon did not stop moving and collided with the dome of ice. The ice dome shattered as the demon’s rock hard skull crashed through the shield, revealing a vulnerable Kargill. The demon smacked Kargill across the chest, sending him skidding into a nearby wall. Now Kargill was mad.
The elf raised his arms into the air and a bolt of lighting emerged from the ceiling and struck the demon, greatly disorienting him. Steam came off the demon's body as the lightning evaporated the ice on its skin.
“Ice barrage!” Kargill screamed. Ice erupted from the ground, but not in the shape of the usual pillar. The ice twisted and turned, forming a shape that resembled that of a tidal wave. The wave of ice collided with the demon, pummeling it and sending him crashing back into the wall.
Blood flowed down the walls and onto the floor from the demon’s numerous wounds. The demon tried to move, but was lodged back into the wall by a giant icicle piercing its stomach. The demon grabbed at the icicle nailing it to the wall, but it would not budge.
“Give me your blood,” Kargill muttered. The air was filled with a red haze as Kargill’s ancient magic slowly drained the demon’s blood through its skin. The mist of blood flowed through the air and over to Kargill, who absorbed it into his body, using it to partially heal himself."
Dart, Teran, and Traiborn simply watched in awe.

The White Knight’s Castle was very busy today. The training grounds were filled with men trying to get in all the training they could within the next few weeks until they had to leave for Varrock. Warriors were busy sparring, both with wooden and real swords. The few mages in the White Knights were busy dueling and practicing spells. Griff, along with the other rangers, was practicing by shooting targets.
Griff was very good friends with both Roven and Kargill, and he was the premier archer in the White Knights.
In each of his hands he held his automatic revolving crossbows. Griff held both crossbow up to eye level. He then squeezed the triggers and a bolt fired from each crossbow and flew through the air into his target. There was a clicking noise as the next bolt rotated into place and moved into the chamber, ready to fire. Griff fired twenty more bolts, ten from each crossbow, and then walked over to the targets. He was satisfied to see that all twenty bolts had struck the bull's-eye dead center.
“That’s twenty bolts dead center. Now where is my money?” Griff asked. A fellow White Knight stepped forward and handed Griff a small bag of money, angry to have lost the wager.
“Anyone want to bet that I can't hit forty bolts in the bull's-eye?” Griff asked the crowd with confidence. One knight stepped forward to make the bet, but was interrupted as the rangers heard a loud grunting noise.
They turned to see the noise coming from Commander Lorad. He was laying on his back doing a primitive bench-press with a large steel pillar.
“Lorad has got to be lifting four hundred pounds!” Griff said in awe.
“Five hundred actually,” a fellow ranger pointed out. Griff stood there in amazement for a few more seconds before getting back to target practice.

And the training cycle continued for nearly a month until it was the day that the White Knights were leaving for Varrock…

Kargill awoke with a hoarse cough. His muscular body and his bed sheets were covered in sweat. He squinted and rubbed his eyes as they adjusted to the light.
Kargill had another night terror last night. However, this one felt very real. Kargill had a hard time believing that it had been merely a dream, and that he was back in the present time. It felt like the events had occurred mere minutes ago instead of years. He could remember everything; the ruthless slaughter of his village, the Zamarokians, the disciples of Iban, and the death of Gavin.
No matter what Kargill did the night terrors and flashbacks would not stop. He tried to bury the pain, but the memories remained. Kargill sat up and slowly got out of bed, dropping to one knee.
“Strength through virtue, Armadyl help my soul," Kargill prayed.
“I did not know that elves followed Armadyl.” Kargill turned to see Wizard Traiborn standing in his doorway.
“I thought that elves followed Seren?” Traiborn asked. “I have even heard of a few elves following Guthix, but an elf following Armadyl? I have never heard of it.”
“What are you doing here?” Kargill asked, very annoyed that Wizard Traiborn had invaded his privacy.
“I heard a lot of noise so I came up here to see what was causing all of the commotion,” Traiborn replied.
“But that is not the only reason that you came up here, is it?” Kargill asked.
“No. I am here on much more important matters.”

“What is it that is so important?” Kargill asked. “I know you didn't come up here just to ask about my following Armadyl.”
“Actually, you are wrong about that. I am here about your run-in with the Zamorakians.” Kargill stood there speechless. How did he know about the Zamorakians?
“How did you know about that?” Kargill asked.
“A group of very hostile looking Zamorakians with weapons showed up at the front door today. They said they were looking for an Armadyl following elf in black robes.”
“They showed up here?” Kargill said, completely alarmed that they knew where to find them.
“They showed up right on my doorstep. Now I certainly do not want these people returning to this Tower and threatening the wellbeing of the people inside! ” Traiborn replied. “I actually use to be quite the adventurer. I know that Zamorak has been fearful of Armadyl ever since he used the Staff of Armadyl to banish Zaros.”
“I see you know about the history of the God Wars.”
“Of course I know about the God Wars! I am one of the greatest wizards and scholars the land of Runescape has ever seen! What I don’t know is if the Zamorakians came looking for you simply because you follow Armadyl, or if there is some… other reason,” said Traiborn. "I am also very interested in that fact that an elf follows Armadyl instead of Seren."
“It is a long story,” replied Kargill.
“I’ve got plenty of time.” Traiborn then pulled up a chair and sat down infront of the elf. Kargill knew that he could trust Traiborn. Who knows, he might even be able to help him with his flashbacks.

“Armadyl was not always the passive God that he is now,” Kargill spoke. “My elfin clan is an ancient one, dating back to the Second Age. The Gods played a much larger role in every day life back then. Armadyl’s reach went as far as even the elfin lands.”
“How did the Serenists respond to the elves of other religions?” Traiborn asked.
“Any elf that did not follow Seren was shunned from Prifddinas and forced to live in segregation. My clan lived in a village on the East coast of Tirannwn, until they came.”
“Who are they?”
“They were the followers of Zamorak, led by his son Iban. The Zamorakian elves and humans came from the Underground Pass. They wiped out my entire village. Now I am the only one left.”
Kargill was filled with an overwhelming sadness due to the repressed memories of his dead clan, but he felt some relief in finally being able to tell someone. Perhaps more than sadness he felt hate. Hate for the Zamorakians and those who had killed his village. Kargill was battle hardened, and did not let any of his emotions show to Traiborn.
Wizard Traiborn did not know what to say. He could only imagine Kargill’s pain from losing his entire village and clan.
“I am deeply sorry.”
“Thanks,” Kargill replied.
“I know this must be hard for you, but I sense that you are keeping something from me.”
“My past is mine, and I alone must bear it,” the elf replied coldly.
“Kargill, ever since you arrived from the West five years ago you have been deeply troubled and tortured by nightmares. We can not help you unless you are willing do talk to us.”
Kargill knew Traiborn was right. Something had to be done about these flashbacks, no matter how much he hated the idea of revealing his past.
"What I tell you can not leave this room,” Kargill said very seriously.
“I completely understand,” replied Traiborn. Kargill slowly stood up from his bed and walked over to a chest on the other side of the room.

The chest was very large and bulky, made of several different layers of metal and wood. What was interesting about the chest is that there was no visual way of opening it. There was no handle, no keyhole, and the chest seemed to be completely sealed. The entire thing was a solid cube of metal and wood, with no way to access what was inside.
“The chest is a magical one,” stated Kargill, aware of the funny look that Traiborn was giving him. The elf laid his hands on the chest and began to talk in an uninterruptible language, which Traiborn assumed to be elfish. White light was emitted from the chest as the metal and wood receded, leaving a large hole. Kargill reached inside the chest and withdrew a long black box covered in rags.
Kargill very slowly and carefully opened the box, almost like he was a SWAT team member trying to diffuse a bomb. Kargill withdrew a staff and placed it on the bed. The staff was no other than the Staff of Iban.
“My God!” Traiborn exclaimed. This means… This means…,” he repeated, too bewildered to finish the sentence.
“That is right. I killed Iban, the son of Zamorak.”
