Everett Jewel
Fifty thousand. Too much, but it couldn't be refused. The price proved it risky, maybe even probably a trap - they wouldn't pay that much if they didn't expect significant trouble - but the payout more than made up for it.
"We don't have much choice," said Jewel, "so let's get there soon."
He looked at Kat as she addressed him and wiped his mouth with his hand. He was glad she cared enough to have thought of him. He often couldn't get very far away from the ship without feeling 'jumpier'. It recalled to him the time shortly after he was discharged, where he was brought to Earth for a ceremony which he didn't end up attending. The Autumn Star left beforehand, but before it was even out of sight flying away, he disappeared off the face of the Earth. He turned up a month later back on the ship and generally avoided disembarking from then on.
Sometimes, when they landed on planets, he would walk around the perimeter a little, and if they landed in a city, he could usually visit some nearby shops and restaurants. When they landed on medium and small spaceports, he could usually explore the whole place, and it would be likely the facility they would be exploring would be about that size or smaller.
Still, he couldn't be certain to be useful. His area of expertise was tied to the engine room. Even before his accident, he never had been all that good of a shot, and since the time his blaster went off in the common room he had lost the habit of carrying a weapon on him at all times, and often didn't trust himself to go to the shooting gallery to practice. Furthermore, he would be more vulnerable than the average crewmember due to not being able to wear a shield.
