Wulvash considered the question for only a few short moments before shaking his head, accompanying it with a proper response.

" Not quite. My understanding of magic is limited, but I've seen you use your abilities to great effect - they are far more suitable for you to defend yourself with than your new blade, " He told her, raising his chin slightly in to get at an itch that was bothering him. His eyes rolled across the street they were on, few people in sight and those who were would not overhear - still, he lowered his tone. " However... The forbidden nature of your magic may pose problems should the company find out. By no means am I banning you from using it, only urging you to remain subtle... But if you are about to come to harm, use everything at your disposal to defend yourself - witnesses be damned. "

It was probably unnecessary to even remind Zensira of this. With how long they'd been traveling together he was fully aware that she was subtle, else they would have long been pursued by all manner of dark magic hunters. Witnesses usually consisted of anyone foolish enough to try and attack them on the road, in which case no witnesses were left to tell the tale - Wulvash made sure of that.

Something which would not work were a fellow member of the company a witness.

" The dagger - your dagger - is a tool for you to help protect yourself. When we board the ship I'll teach you how best to use it... Consider it as an option that would otherwise have not been available. "

Subtlety wasn’t exactly the correct word; it was more that she hardly ever even used her magic due to the fact that she required an order to do so. Performing magic without the direction of her Master was something that she most certainly would not do, just like anything else. She knew that part of her magic was “illegal”, although such a concept - something those who would be Masters could not do - made little sense to her and she only knew it because Master Wulvash had told her so several times.

What he told her now was simple and easy to understand, however: a direct order. She was to preserve her own safety should it be in jeopardy, and was to use any means necessary. That was simple. That could be done. If it wasn’t necessary, she wasn’t to use her magical talents that pertained to the “illegal” types. As usual, there was no mention of his own safety, but that was something that could be ordered when the time came, as it should be.

If her Master wished for her to learn to use a dagger, then she would not disagree with that either. Even if weapons were not for slaves, the whim of her Master overrode everything else. He wished it, and so it would be. If it was an option along with everything else she had, then it would be ranked as the effective usage would dictate. Only the situation would tell if it worked or not.

For the time being, all she could do was bow and say, “
As you command, Master Wulvash.

The Docks

Enlisting in a Mercenary Company was a simple enough task. Sarah unrolled a long scroll which she explained was the Company Contract. She quickly went over the Mercenary Guild's code of conduct - obey the law, obey your officers, do not break a contract without guild permission, and so on.

At the end of it she asked for their names, and filled them in. The quill she used glowed slightly, indicating some sort of enchantment, which probably explained how she had been able to use it without an inkwell. She also crossed out several names - presumably the people who chose to leave - and they disappeared from the scroll.

Then, she rolled the scroll back up, and reminded them of the time that the boat would depart.

---

The Next Day

The docks were once again rather busy, as they always were. On the deck of the Sea Drake , sailors made preparations to cast off. Two figures stood observing it, both wearing robes of the Academy. One of them, a man, wore blue, and the other, a woman, wore white.

The time for departure was near. One by one, the various members of Arenar Company appeared and crossed over onto the ship, heading below deck to get settled. Vanick stood by the gangplank and clapped each member on the shoulder as they passed. Sarah stood by him, a new list in hand, as she jotted down the names of those who appeared.

There were others appearing as well - strangers who weren't part of the Arenar Company, but were still equipped as mercenaries. It seemed that the Academy had hired more than one Company for this endeavor. And indeed, there were two other figures who stood with Vanick - a woman in steel plate, and a man in chainmail who carried a longbow. Their armours were adorned in subtle ways which marked them out as leaders. Each one was accompanied by a Quartermaster of their own.

The ship was meant to depart within five minutes.

The Docks

“Uugghh! I’ve had enough of damn boats...” Caspara grumbled to herself as the company boarded the ship. Her twin gave her a smack across the shoulder.

“Aw, don’t be a pouty lizard, Caspy! We get to meet new people!” Xavakuun exclaimed eagerly, his sister scowling.

“When this is done, I will lie in gold!” Octavius remarked confidently, the short but muscular wannabe centurion walking with his chin high (that is, helm high?).

Griselda was silent, so Octavius smacked his gauntlet across her pauldron, getting her attention, then shrugging at her. He then pointed at the young dark elf kid, the one named Zensira, or at least he thought he pointed at her, suggesting it was she who smacked the tall lady’s armour. Griselda just shook her head, and said nothing.

The Sea Drake

Griselda stood silently at the railings, overlooking the waters. She kept herself to herself, very few men able to stand up to her shoulders.
As Octavius walked, he joined a group of walking sailors. As he and the sailors past Griselda, he gave her a metallic smack over her armoured butt. When Griselda’s head turned in her helm, Octavius walked along as if nothing happened, whistling as a few seagulls cawed.

The Drakonian twins stood at the other side of the ship, apparently bickering about something that surely couldn't be important. At times they swiped a paw at each other, something between careless and annoyed, but their conflict never escalated too far. As Octavius walked past them, he stepped on Xavakuun’s tail, causing the big dinosaur to jump with an odd, high-pitched, yelp-like noise. The twins looked at the centurion, but he just scuttled along, cape flowing in the wind. The two Drakonians paused, then looked at each other, then continued bickering.

Octavius walked forth, arms high and apart, a bottle of wine tied to his belt. Scuttling to Vanick, just as it would seem Octavius would give him a hug, the stocky centurion suddenly put his hands on the shoulders of the mailed longbowman and loricated woman standing near Vanick.

“Ah-hahhh, ha ha ha ha hah! Another company!” Octavius exclaimed confidently, head turning side to side. “So, who gets to share the treasures we’ll sleep in? Eh! Surely not me, ah?” he continued, then gave the loricated woman a little shake, “Maybe this one needs some treasures before she sleeps at all! Hah hah hah hah!" he continued as a seagull flew overhead, flying into a mast of the ship and bouncing off with a thud.

Annie decided to runaway from home because her father's wife just gave birth to an legitimate child and lost interested in her. He also stops trying to find someone for her to squire. Now it was nearly impossible for her to become a knight. So packed her supplies into her pack that she needed. She got dressed, got her sword, bow and arrows. Then she slip out the back door of her home in the middle of the night and left.

She traveled many days to get to the docks and she finally got there. She realize she was low on food and water. She was amazed how big it was. She found the ship and got on. She was ready to this venture. Still unsure if her father would look for her that what scared her right now.

Emerging from the bustling streets came the solid figure of Wulvash, fully armed and sporting a considerable sized backpack that bulged gently with his purchased supplies. Just a little behind and to his side would be Zensira, the pair descending onto the docks with about the usual amount of looks coming their way. Perhaps that would be one good thing about the Ashlands - fewer people to be mistrustful of the Drakonian and his charge.

As he approached the gangplank Wulvash took notice of the two others that stood at the top along with Vanick - both adorned with the subtle markings of leadership, evidently not of the same mercenary company. Of course the Arenar Company would not be the only mercenaries hired for such an expedition, Wulvash scarcely believed his own foolishness at thinking that would be the case. He paused behind another mercenary boarding ahead of them, sparing a glance back at Zensira - perhaps only to confirm she was still there, unnecessarily, before facing forwards and crossing onto the vessel.

" Captain, " He greeted Vanick at the top with a respectful nod, eyes briefly sweeping over the two other leaders - not bothering to hide that he was sizing them up. After a few short moments he gave a nod to them both as well before clambering aboard properly, finding a place by the side where he could look back over the docks comfortably.

Zensira’s appraisal of the newcomers and their mercenaries was much less in-depth than likely any of the others. She did barely more than recognize that they were indeed there, and that they all seemed to be individuals that her Master treated with some form of respect. According to things that he had said, this likely meant that they were equal to him in rank, if not higher, in whatever the societal structure was.

Although some would think that this meant she was to treat them in the same manner, this was not the case. The only person that she was to interact with in any capacity was her Master, unless told otherwise by him. It wasn’t her place to speak to these others, because it was her Master’s decision and will whether or not she was to be noticed at all. As such, the clap on her shoulder was met with absolutely no reaction, save for perhaps a momentary righting of her balance.

The confirmation by her Master that Zensira was there was indeed unnecessary, as the only reasons she would leave his side were if she was dead or if she was ordered to do so. Both would be extremely obvious. She deferentially met his gaze - eyes not on his, but below and at the shoulder level - but said nothing, merely a confirmation that she was aware of his attention on her.

Once aboard, she took a spot a few steps back from the rail of the ship. Only having been on one a few times in her life, the drow’s normally deliberate footing was much less so. Her stance was not one of unease, but neither was it one of comfort. She simply did not have sea legs, and even the minor movements of the docked ship underneath her were movements that she was not accustomed to.

Octavius

The armoured woman swatted Octavius's hand aside with surprising speed and strength, glaring at him. The bowman, meanwhile, did not strike the hand away, but had an expression of clear annoyance.

"Enough of that." Vanick snapped at Octavius. "Onto the ship."

---

Wulvash and Zensira

Vanick nodded at both the Drakonian and his servant, albeit somewhat warily. They were new arrivals to the company, and they were still something of a mystery. The Drakonian had proved his use in a fight, while the Drow girl had small use of their own, but very little was known about them.

In Wulvash's own words, he was a traveling warrior, and the drow girl was a former slave who could not accept that she was free. While that did explain her behavior, one had to wonder if that was the full truth, or simply a cover-story. The girl herself was a question of her age - barely even an adult, and possibly even younger. Vanick had allowed her into the company with only the greatest reluctance, and now she was potentially about to embark on the most dangerous job of all time.

Yet still, he allowed them onboard. They would need every available swordhand for this expedition.

Once Wulvash and his drow were on board, several sailors began to look at them with mixtures of uncertainty, suspicion, and fear. One of them looked from Wulvash to the Drakonian twins, then back to Wulvash.

"Shit-worshippers..." He muttered under his breath, just barely loud enough for Wulvash to hear, before walking away.

Annie was on the deck of the ship watching the commotion. She never been on a huge boat before so she didn’t know what to expect to happen on this boat. She was standing where she can watch their boat take off. She was excited but nervous at the same time. She didn’t know what her job will be on this ship. She was ready for anything. She heard the comment that was said towards the Drakonian and the Dow. She thought it was very rude as she watched the man walked away but kept her comment to herself. -Dances-
