The tavern had been around for a long time; longer, some believed, than the two countries that it stood between the borders of. Wars had come and gone, leaders had changed, revolutions had been made, and yet it stood still, unmoving and unchanging, in the middle of everything that went on. Although it would never be acknowledged as more than a waystation by anyone in a position of authority, those that traveled there could not deny that it was a place that had a somewhat unearthly feel to it, different from the attitudes of the countries that it sat between. It was as though it transcended a need to fit in either place, and simply existed as it pleased.

It would be in this place that the story would begin, a fantastical beginning perhaps better suited to a tale of centuries past. Yet it was not that time that it chose for its setting, but rather the one when such fantastical elements had been all but forgotten by the rest of the world. Technology had taken the hold that magic had been all but eliminated from, and with it the thoughts of a world of fantasy had been relegated to little more than legends. Nobody was quite sure when the old ways had diminished to nothing, but it matters little to anyone besides those who wish to chronicle such events.

While it is true that magic still held a place, some of the technological marvels using old elements of magical energy at their core, the systematic dismantling of all organizations and systems of and relying on the schools of magical study had all but been completed by this point in time. With the advent of technology that allowed the common citizen to replicate, or even overshadow, what magic could do, few people wished to rely on the few that could utilize it any longer. The balance of power shifted into the hands of the people, or so it was believed by the vast majority of analysts. Lives became easier, more people had strength, and the world as a whole became more friendly and safe to the common man.

Cities grew larger, kingdoms flourished, and the world grew.

Even so, the spread of technological marvels is not the subject that this story begins on. In fact, the tavern was strangely devoid of such marvels, despite being in a unique position to have influence from countries on both sides. No, according to those who passed between countries and visited the place, it had not changed in the entirety of the time that they had been spending nights there. An old-fashioned wooden building, it had none of the modernized amenities that the taverns or inns in the big cities would have. The bartender, who was also the owner, rarely left from behind the counter, and rumors claimed that the man never aged and had been there since the establishment’s beginning. Such a fantastical story was an impossibility, of course, but that didn’t stop the rumors from getting around.

It was rare that there was nobody there, but quite common to see soldiers and travelers from both countries in at once. The atmosphere was sometimes tense due to the rather poor relations between countries, but nothing ever happened. That was the law: no fights, no violence. The tavern was a waystation, somewhere that anyone could come and spend their night, and the neutral ground that it stood on was no country’s to lay claim to. The only word that was law was that of the man behind the bar.

It was in this room, the downstairs of the two-story building, where the cast of the play would assemble, and where the curtain would rise on the first act.

~Rules and Stuff~

There’s only humans in the established countries. If you’ve got some request for another race, ask me, but it’s more than likely that I’ll say no.

I would prefer if each character is at least mildly capable, and it would be extremely helpful if they’re even a bit motivated to take action. Things won’t get very far if everyone is indifferent about everything.

By the same token, people at the level of an established hero - such as an esteemed military commander, the master/founder of a combat style, etc. - are not what starting characters should be.

The Black Hand is not an existing organization, and although child spies may be employed by various groups the main characters cannot be them.

Supernatural abilities will be available later on, but not at the start. Everyone is a normal person in that respect at the beginning.

~Technology~

Technology is relatively modern. Cars exist, most places are wired with some form of electricity, etc. However, it’s still in the early phases, so something like cars are extremely rare and only the property of those with the money to afford such a commodity.

It is important to note that most early technology utilized magic in some form, but that is not the case with a lot of the newer models. Since the genius inventor Kal Vendira and his team of researchers came up with the theory and method of harnessing the natural forces of the world rather than the supernatural, the progression of technology has sprung forward in massive strides. Some say that it is moving too quickly, that containing the growth into a manageable process is important for the safety of the average person, but few listen to these warnings.

The (arguably) largest development in the past several years has been the rail network that crisscrosses the giant nation of Netheris. Allowing much quicker travel between cities and towns, the network of railroads has caused the industry and productivity of the country to skyrocket. Most argue that this is vital: unlike nearly every other country, Netheris covers enough land that transportation on foot is next to impossible, and the only way for it to keep up with the industrial improvements of all the other nations is to come up with the efficient transportation network that it has.

The rail network only exists there, as everywhere else can get by on foot or with other forms of motorized transportations. No air transportation exists as of yet, although it is rumored that everyone is rushing to be the first.

The increase in technology has also increased the amount of people that cluster in the main town and city centers. Most of the homes out in the countryside have yet to receive electrical network connection unless they are lucky enough to have some use that necessitates the connection.

~Nations~

Netheris
The largest of the nations on the continent, Netheris has the largest number of citizens as well as the largest city. However, there is also much more open and empty land in Netheris than there is anywhere else. Most of the remote towns are still fully governed by the noble families that lived there, although with the advent of the railroad the central government is now beginning to exert more influence over the noble families.

Halai
One of the neighbors of Netheris, and considered the least technologically advanced on the continent. Halai is mostly an agricultural nation, nearly the entirety of the countryside taken up by farms. Local area are governed by elected officials from those areas, the idea being that only those from each area fully understand what is necessary to keep everything running properly. Exports a great deal of the food consumed by nearly all the other nations.

Karnv
A mountainous region and the pioneer in mining technology across the continent, Karnv is home to the largest metal mine of any country on the continent. They export quite a bit of the material that is used to create the massive structures in the cities of other countries. Entrance to the country is difficult due to the mountain ranges, leaving travel by ship the typical means of imports and exports.

Beral
The greatest place in on the continent to be if you want to study or develop the newest technology. Their research teams have been behind the majority of the major breakthroughs since the beginning of the advancement of technology, and the country was the home and patron of the inventor Kal Vendira. Although ruled by a monarchy, quite a bit of power in the country is held by the research groups that are responsible for the country’s prosperity.

Tias
The country that is home of the headquarters of the Church, the major religious organization on the continent since time immemorial. Because of this, they have a fair bit of influence in all of the goings-on between the other countries, although this has been diminishing in recent years.
