Major NPCs are hero-class characters with their own stories. A Major NPC is chosen at random to appear sometime in each chapter, then leaves by the end.

Users can claim or recreate any of these NPCs.

Backstory: Born as Inukai Takeo, his green eyes and white skin are clear signs of Eurasian origins. Despite his partial European blood, he, like most bushi, is old-fashioned, and rather scornful to changes and modernization. A true warrior faces worthy foes face-to-face, one-on-one, and charges headlong into danger expecting to die!

His father was a native jizamurai, and his mother a maiden descending from the Vikings two thousand years ago. Growing up as a landowner's son, he worked in the fields and trained in the art of war with his brothers.

When he became an adult, his name changed to Midori Hitomi, and he set out for adventure with his brothers. Together, they served as mercenaries and bounty hunters, and then became retainers for the local daimyo, also serving as demon-slayers, bandit-killers, and enforcers.

Eventually, a rival daimyo attacked. Midori Hitomi and his brothers led the charge, slaying a score of enemies and some other bushi, but the battle ended inconclusively, with both sides taking heavy casualties. A powerful oni then came and wiped out both exhausted armies, then destroyed their lands and people.

By the end, there was only one human survivor, escaping with one eye. This survivor became Daisuke. He would never allow this to happen to anyone else, and seek revenge.

Destiny: Daisuke swore he would protect people from oni, and slay the demon who destroyed his life so long ago. Despite over forty years of searching, vengeance still flows in his veins, forever unyielding...

Backstory: An elegant samurai woman from Kyushu, born with immense height, even most men are not as tall as she is. Growing up in a samurai family serving the Shoni clan, Nei was a rather reclusive girl, preferring to be alone, but also trained with her father and five brothers for war as she got older. She was often selfish with her time and had few friends, but was well-educated by her mother, and helped around the house.

Long ago, her clan was pushed out of their hereditary position, but still kept some positions in the Dazaifu government. Some of her ancestors fought against the Mongol invaders long ago. The Shoni were consistently defeated by the Ouchi family, and a few centuries later, destroyed by the Ryuzoji clan. Nei's heritage comes from the sole survivor of this massacre.

The Ryuzoji were then defeated and assimilated by Naoshige after he killed their daimyo in battle. During the battle, Nei's father, who fought for Naoshige to seek revenge against the Ryuzoji, died in battle, never knowing that revenge would finally come. Nei's mother, gravely ill, died upon receiving news of her husband's death. Help never came, but a group of wako did, attacking the coastal town. Nei and her brothers equipped their war gear, and set out to fight. The wako were too numerous, and razed the town. House ablaze, Nei fought her way into the woods and escaped. She has never seen her brothers since.

Although her upper body lacks size, her long, long legs are muscular. She is not remarkably strong or heavy, but her narrow torso and slim build allows her to perform rabid cuts until she gets tired or strained.

Destiny: There is no luck in Kyushu, only defeat in her family history. She just wants a little victory, and a new life.

Backstory: Her Dutch father works for the Dutch East India company, at a trading outpost on Hirado Island. Many wako and various European traders use the island for their base of operations.

A mean mother of samurai descent made sure her blue-eyed Eurasian daughter grew up knowing how to fight, just in case wako, European, or bloodthirsty samurai from Kyushu tried anything funny. Mother drank too much sake, and father drank too much gin. So, growing up as an only child with alcoholic, abusive parents, Eva had a short, unhappy childhood, often the one who had to tidy up the house and guard father's wares overnight. She cried many times, and was punished for her babyish behavior.

When Eva turned fifteen, she shed her first blood: a burglar who broke into the house when her parents were drunk asleep. Although she became a local hero, she was rather shocked by what she had done.

To ensure her daughter was a true samurai, mother had arranged for Eva to practice sword cuts on condemned criminals. Eva didn't want to, but she feared mother, even more than killing, and did anything to make her parents happy. She eventually got used to beheading criminals and captured wako, always feeling mother glaring into the back of her head, and father's slaps on her face.

Gradually, her parents bought bits of armour, new blades, and a pistol for their girl, wanting Eva to be perfect: cute, lean, fearless. Eva never wanted to be a warrior, but was forced into it. Her parents set her up as their own personal enforcer, even hiring ninja to train her, expecting her to guard merchandise and kill intruders. She obeyed. After her body count became fifty, she mentally broke, and ran away from home...

Destiny: Get away, far, far, away, away from everything...

Name: Kuro Kenji

Appearance: 6'10'', 370 lbs.

Psychology: outgoing, upbeat, headstrong

Backstory: He has dark skin as he's a descendant of an African brought by nanban traders, who's size and strength impressed a daimyo so much he took him in as a retainer. Kenji's ancestor then married a Kyoto woman. Indeed, it is rare to find a Blasian around these parts, and so he is easily recognizable. Although technically a samurai of Kyoto, like most Shugoki, his goal is to protect the people, so he usually does not partake in wars or offensive campaigns.

One day during his travels, he saw an adventurous mountain climber threatened by a clock-faced oni, and things weren't looking good. Charging forth as fast as his chubby body could go, Kenji tackled the oni, then smashed it with his giant steel club, hurling it down the mountainside. Having saved the mountain climber, the two became friends.

Since then, Kenji continues wandering Japan in search of heroic trails.

Name: Duncan Carothers

Backstory: Born in York but of Scottish descent, he, like many other sailors and soldiers, set out for king and country. He fought for the British East India Company, then ended up on anti-pirate patrols in the South China Sea. He and his fleet even fought the so-called Pirate Lord, but a storm ended the battle early. Afterwards, another pirate leader, referred to as Butcher, attacked the weathered British fleet at night and a slaughter unfolded. Duncan was one of the few who escaped, landing on Japan by morning...

Destiny: Survive.

With him are about thirty other Englishmen. He is an experienced adventurer.

Backstory: Growing up much bigger than most other Karasu meant that Nero would never fly. So, he had no choice but to keep his talons on the ground most of the time. Unlike his two older brothers, who despite their size were interested in sorcery rather than martial arts, who sought to discover why their race was magically inept.

As he got older, Nero joined the army to train and serve as the superheavy infantry of the Karasu folk. His brothers, on the other hand, eventually discovered how to use sorceries, surprising their race. The brothers were so immersed into magic that they spent their lives seeking sorceries, relics, and magical artefacts.

One day, Nero's brothers told him they would go to an ancient cathedral to investigate the magic there. The next day, a scout informed Nero of many fallen soldiers at the cathedral. He and other Karasu warriors went to investigate, and found a two-headed demonic Karasu devouring their dead. In the ensuing fight, only Nero survived, but managed to fight off the monster. His brothers were nowhere in sight...

Panoply: O-yoroi but a thick hood instead of a kabuto.

Psychology: disciplined, unwavering, fearless

Backstory: A classic sohei, he lives to meditate and fight for freedom, justice, and adventure. He can use his o-naginata on foot and horseback, having trained his whole life for war and meditation.

Destiny: Shinjiro's life is one of adventure and meditation. He does not fight for wealth or fame, instead helping those who need it whenever he can. He respects those who can defeat him.

Backstory: A Eurasian samurai from Shikoku, donning imposing nanban-style three-quarter plate armour. The solid steel plates are of superior protection than oyoroi, but heavier and not as flexible or versatile. Although loyal to his island homeland, there wasn't much going on, so he set sail for adventure abroad.

Growing up, he befriended a large crab oni, and has always had an affinity for the ocean and its creatures. Even now as an adult, he remains friends with that crab oni. Perhaps they will meet again someday?

Destiny: Seek adventure and glory.

Backstory: A ninja with wings is still a ninja. She works for the Hattori and Tokugawa, but her true loyalties are unclear. Since she can glide with her small wings, she is a valuable scout and assassin. She has only failed to kill once, her target having been a nanban, as the presence of a bright, yellow, masked monk disrupted her senses.

Backstory: A spellwarrior kitsune utilizing swordsmanship, acrobatics, stealth, curses and black pyromancy, Kage (pronounced 'kah-geh') is a truly dangerous and versatile creature. His claws and teeth are their own weapons, and his canine physiology gives him exceptional hardiness, stamina, and agility despite his bulky size.

He usually does not rush directly into a fight, preferring to stalk his foes from afar, then attacking when he gains the best opportunity. If things do not go well, he will retreat, then try again at a later time.

Destiny: Seek and outsmart worthy foes.



Curse of the Kitsune
Curse your foe, getting into their head and making them lose their mind, decreasing their defensive and offensive capabilities for three turns. Only affects the living, and cannot work against powerful monsters or demons.

Shadowmeld
While stationary or moving slowly in darkness, your body looks like a shadow, making you nearly invisible even up close.

Bloody
Successful attacks cause severe bleeding.

Unblockable
Your heavy attacks can’t be blocked or parried for one turn.

Shieldbiter
Your heavy attacks shatter shields of ordinary enemies, and knock aside stronger shields.

Chilling Glare
Scowling and then keeping eye contact intimidates foe, lowering their offensive capabilities for two turns.

Demonic Howl
Warcry intimidates nearby enemies, lowering their offensive capabilities for two turns.

Blade Dancer
For three turns, attack and dodge at the same time, and perform ghostly feints.

Black Fire Orb
Hurls a black fireball.

Black Serpent
Releases undulating black flames that trace the ground.

Psychology: warlike, impulsive, maladroit, graceless, amorous, bashful

Backstory: Looking like a giant mutated doll-faced girl, well, that's basically what Okichouko is. Despite being only one year old, this baby oni has a massive lower body, immense legs, and over-musclebound thunder thighs. Her muscles, and full breasts, are a clear sign that this oni reached puberty rather quickly. Four huge tails, a long neck, protrusive shoulderblades, and lorication make her quite the odd and frightening tank to behold. Contrary to her hulking stature, she has a light voice, but can scream very loud, and even howl or growl like an animal. She fights with odd knuckleduster-like weapons, which were apparently carved from the teeth and bones of a giant oni from long ago.

Not even she knows her own origins. She if, after all, only one. She faintly remembers that she grew up in a huge dark area, which had rivers of 'gooey fire', and that there were stone steps she had to go up and down. She also somewhat remembers being trained in war before she could even walk, and everyone called her Okichouko, and there were others like her. Well, once she could walk with those elephantine legs all by herself, she scuttled off somewhere, and all of a sudden, she was no longer where she used to be...

Destiny: She's just a year old, how can she possibly understand anything about real-life?

Her unusual body has hyperactive cellular division, and heals a hundred times faster than normal.
