Heavy Archer

Many samurai, ashigaru and sohei train in kyûdô, but only few ascend to Hachiman. The best archers wield the mighty daikyu, a yumi with an extended top, shot with a unique technique. Daikyu have a draw weight up to two hundred pounds, and require a physically powerful archer to wield. Has greater range and power than regular yumi, and shoots longer arrows capable of driving up to a few inches into wood, or even sink a small boat! They carry a katana, wakizashi and tanto as sidearms, and heavy armour makes them versatile support warriors.

Straight Through
Overdraw your bow, launching the arrow with even greater power, speed, and range, capable of piercing the shields of ordinary foes and non-plate armours.

Hunter
While hiding or stalking in forests, enables accurate long-range shooting without revealing your position, and enemies less likely to ambush or hide from you.

Arrow Storm
If available, archers will shower arrows in the area you point at.

Second Wind
Ignore exhaustion, pain, and any negative status effects, for two turns.

Whistling Arrows
Begin shooting arrows with holed shafts, which make high-pitched screeches as they fly, distracting or frightening whoever they fly over or into.

Flaming Arrow
Apply pitch to your arrow and set it alight. A flaming arrow can ignite combustible material, such as black powder or stacks of dried hay.

Poisoned Arrow
Shoot an arrow soaked with deadly, gooey poison.

Kishuu
Upon ambushing, your results are more likely to be swift and fatal.

Iron Lungs
You can sprint even when exhausted for two turns.

Juggernaut

Teppô Samurai


When firelocks first came to Japan from Europeans, they were a rare weapon. Samurai who got them used them, even though guns killed without honour or skill. It was not long until the Japanese produced their own firelocks, called teppô . Not only did samurai wield guns akin to the ashigaru or sohei, but potentially wielded pistols, carbines, blunderbusses, or even oversized muskets firing slugs nearly as big as a fist! Thus, Teppô Samurai wield a large-calibre gun, strong enough to damage buildings, and heavy armour makes them versatile, dangerous gunners. Katana, wakizashi and tanto are sidearms.

Grapeshot
Load your gun with a handful of tiny shots, greatly increasing the spread but reducing range and accuracy.

Dart
Load your gun with a long, pointy, winged slug, greatly increasing range, accuracy and penetration.

Mortar
Load a bamboo shoot with a cast-iron bomb on the end. Light the fuse, then launch the bomb overhead allies, walls, or trees, or through windows to clear rooms.

Rocket
Load your gun with an explosive cast-iron rocket, greatly increasing range but lowering accuracy.

Smoke Bomb
Suddenly throw a bomb, or set it up as a trap. Upon exploding, releases noxious smoke in a large area, and creates a smoke screen.

Chain Shot
Load your gun with two iron balls connected by a chain. Although there is less power and range, upon firing, the chain shot spins, greatly increasing surface area. May dangerously wrap around target.

Second Wind
Ignore exhaustion, pain, and any negative status effects, for two turns.

Last Laugh
Upon being incapacitated, you automatically drop a high impact explosive.

Juggernaut
While stationary or moving slowly, defensive capabilities increased, and you are more difficult to be stifled, for two turns.

Iron Lungs
You can sprint even when tired or debilitated for two turns.

Heavy Cavalry

Master riders, their steeds are fast, strong, hardy, and brave, trained to smash through battlelines. The rider wears full heavy armour, and wields a yari or naginata as a primary weapon. A katana, wakizashi, tanto, and firelock pistol or carbine serve as sidearms.

Those who can afford a horse can also afford the best of everything, so begin with an additional ten silvers.

Since they must charge against anything, some riders wear an additional bulletproof breastplate, but this is quite heavy.

Horse-whisperer
You and your steed have a spiritual connection, and can seemingly communicate telepathically. Your steed helps you fight by biting, swiping hoofs, and jumping onto foes. If separated, your steed will eventually find a way back to you, too.

Cataphract
Greatly increases the power of your horse's charge, allowing your steed to easily trample enemies to the earth, and provides resistance to enemies' polearms. Lasts three turns.

Windfall
Your steed ignores exhaustion, pain, and any negative status effects, and has increased speed, for two turns.

Bite the Shield
Your steed bites someone's shield, pulls it out their grasp, and spits it away.

Shieldbiter
Your heavy attacks shatter shields of ordinary enemies, and knock aside stronger shields.

Banzai
Perform a fearless, indomitable charge, enticing your steed and NPC allies to do likewise, boosting offensive capabilities of yourself and your allies for three turns. As bodies pile around you, enemy heroes may be drawn to you, seeking out a worthy foe.

Mounted Samurai

Many samurai served as archers, both on foot and horseback, riding horses bred for endurance and agility. They gallop forth to skirmish or select worthy foes to a yumi duel. Like most samurai, they carry a katana, wakizashi, and tanto as sidearms, which they wield after wearing their yumi over the shoulder. Their horses wear masks as extra protection from arrows.

A Single Shot

Refers to a samurai who is also an ascetic priest. When an individual ascends to the nature of deities, one can perform miracles. Indeed, martial arts, heavy armour, blades, and miracles are a formidable arsenal.

Endless Faith
You automatically block or parry incoming strikes, and are immune to fear, pain, injury, curses and poison, for three turns.

Take my Hand
When out of combat, can heal injuries and revive the incapacitated by grabbing their hand.

Now and Zen
Hold your ground, and enter a subconscious state of meditative absorption, increasing stealth and resilience to harm, curses, poison, and negative status effects, until you continue moving.

Rennyo's Guidance
Once you became a sou, you were taught anjin and shinjen, a reflection of your rebirth and gratitude. Whenever you are not fighting, your presence calms NPCs and deters harmful spirits, lesser yokai, and curses.

Yamabushi
Years spent living as a mountain hermit means you know every mountain as if the back of your hand. Your navigation and pathfinding are legendary.

Zori-tori
Magnificent legends are the humblest of souls. Your duty was...to carry your lord's sandals. An important task only the greatest of sages can perform.

A sunny, radiant aura appears above you, and gradually heals the wounds of your companions.

Shaolin


A lifetime spent conditioning one's body, mind and spirit through rigorous, excruciating, dangerous exercises create a saintly, stoic individual who barely feels fear or suffering. Having rock-hard bones, skin as tough as silk, tendons like wood fibre, and muscles as dense as cork, Shaolin are capable of superhuman feats of strength, endurance, stamina, and resilience, and can hold breath for twenty minutes. Even inferior-looking Shaolin can give much bigger foes a nasty surprise!

Most Shaolin are Chinese, and begin without any money, and are armed with just a humble staff. Shaolin temples are in conflict with wako and nanban.

Qigong
Enter a state of dynamic meditation, allowing you to fade away and reappear behind your foe, and then be immune to fear, pain, fatigue, suffocation, poison, curses, and any negative status effects, for three turns, or partly heal yourself and nearby comrades.

Luóhàn shíba shou
Increases capabilities of unarmed martial arts.

Zuìquán
Whenever drunk, your attacks are difficult to parry, block, or read until you sober up.

Second Wind
Ignore exhaustion, pain, and any negative status effects, for two turns.

Heaven's Fallen
Following the tales of Sun Wukong, your agility, unarmed martial arts, and staff-fighting increase when combating enemy heroes or monsters, for three turns.

Most nanban began their careers in Japan with diplomacy and trade, importing European wares, weapons, and technology, whilst bringing exotic goods to Europe or America.

Quick Draw
If you have a loaded pistol, suddenly withdraw it and fire, catching your foe off-guard.

Grenadier
Throw a large, heavy, cast-iron grenade, which will explode violently and hurl shrapnel. The weight of the grenade serves as a weapon in itself, as it's five pounds.

If you are separated from your shipmates, your defence and swimming capabilities increase.

Marine

A Western soldier stationed on a ship, equipped with musket and bayonet. It is their job to guard the captain and his ship at all costs, or serve as line infantry. Rigorous military training makes Marines hardy, disciplined, and obedient to the chain of command. The uniform does not look like much, but it serves as decent soft armour.

Disciplined
Unaffected by fear for three turns.

Bayonet Drills
Such training consisted of lunging with the bayonet, striking with the butt, counter-thrusting, and even using the gun as a lever to trip foes or crack necks. Increases combative capabilities with the bayonet for two turns.

Hold the Line
Stand your ground, increasing reload speed and aim.

Into the breach, lads!
Present bayonet and drive it home, allowing you to charge while ignoring fear and pain for two turns. Since a musket weighs around nine pounds, the weight and length drives the bayonet with great piercing force.

Grenadier
Throw a large, heavy, cast-iron grenade accurately, which explodes violently and hurls shrapnel. The weight of the grenade serves as a weapon in itself, as it weighs five pounds.

The solution to rowdy soldiers-of-fortune: disciplinarian punishment!

Karasu


Mysterious corvian humanoids, also called Tengu, who live in forests, mountains, and stone ruins, who have a reputation for being masterful and ferocious martial artists. They have arms, claws, legs, talons, beak and wings, making them very versatile and dangerous opponents even without weapons, though are a fourth lighter than humans. They do not seem capable of magic, but Karasu are quick and precise. Their warriors almost always wield swords, as ranged weapons have limited uses airborne due to high winds and being able to dodge in all directions.

Skyborne
Fly for up to a few turns, but you'll need to take a break as long as your flying lasted, or reach the end of the chapter, before being able to fly again.

Corvian Gaze
Stare at a foe with your mysterious eyes, lowering their defense for one turn.

Crow Screech
Let out a shrilling cry, frightening nearby non-Karasu enemies and lowering their offensive capabilities for two turns.

Blade Dancer
For three turns, attack and dodge at the same time, and perform ghostly feints.

Bloodshot
Unleash your infernal rage, increasing strength and speed, and attacks cause severe bleeding. Lasts two turns.

Ignore exhaustion, pain, and any negative status effects, for two turns.

Kishuu

Berserk

For two turns, upon parrying an enemy's weapon, you counter with greater force.

Daikarasu

Some Karasu become so big, they are too heavy to fly, so become frightening superheavy loricated infantry. Westerners often call them 'raven knights'. They wear special backplates that have openings for their wings, which they can still use for balance and basic gliding. A large silken cloak protects their armour and folded wings. Since their armour limits mobility, Daikarasu are armed with straight, piercing swords, which they can also use in half-swording against other armoured foes.

Crow Quills
Suddenly grasp four knives in your free hand, and cut with them or throw them.

Sojobo's Teachings
Automatically parry or block attacks, and inspire allied Karasu, for three turns.
