×Chapter 27×
×Beginning of the End×
The newest place they had found to say was nothing short of a ruin. It could hardly even be considered a building, south of Aubury’s Rune Shop a chain of three buildings sat, crumbling to pieces. The building that the trio had taken up residence in was the most habitable. The walls were hardly standing here, the crumbling stones strewn about a floor that appeared to have formerly been wooden floors. Grass and weeds grew in abundance inside of the ruin, the rotten floorboards supplying the fertilizer. All that remained of the roof was the very edges of it, hardly supported by the crumbling walls.
John had been a little bitter at Adam at first about destroying their previous shelter, but some early morning meditation had helped clear his mind and he realized that it was not something Adam could have stopped. Speaking of Adam, he and Rachel had slept right next to each other, leaving John to sleep a few feet away, dozing off with an odd and unintentional separation between himself and the group. John was still sitting on his sleeping mat, legs crossed when Rachel began to wake up, rousing Adam from his sleep as well.
Adam brought himself upright and shivered against the cool of the morning air. Rachel stared up at him with her bright emerald eyes and smiled when he brushed some her hair behind her ear.
“Good morning Adam.”
“Yup,” Adam smiled back at Rachel and helped her sit up, sleep was still grasping at her as she became fully alert.
“We need to find a real place to stay, and maybe some more supplies,” John suggested, standing up from his meditation position. It seemed to Adam and Rachel like he was in an unusually good mood this morning.

Rachel put her magician hat back on, the point once more lolling off to the side. She grabbed her staff off the ground and was ready to go; she had slept in her mage robes that night. Adam was already prepared to leave, all his armor in his backpack and his favorite red dagger hanging in a scabbard tied to his belt. John had already slung his massive sword over his back and started walking among the wreckage of the houses and back into the street. They walked among the crowded streets, the noise of the city not enough to mask the gossip weaving its way along the street.
“Did you hear that explosion last night?”
“Yeah, sure did.”
“They say the blast destroyed to old rundown building, you know the one next to Aubury’s?”
“Some of the people in the area say they saw a giant fire monster in the sky right before it happened.”
“They’re a bunch of lunatics, there weren’t no fire monster. It was probably just some kids playing a prank.”
“A prank that turns a building to ash?”
“Kids and their magic these days. Some novice must’ve bungled a spell and blown up the building.”
“Or maybe it was Aubury…he really knows his way around a rune. Maybe he did*’t like that eyesore of a building ruining the view around his shop.*
The mindless chatter faded into the distance as Adam, Rachel, and John continued on. Adam was looking around warily, expecting someone to know it was him. Rachel looked into his eyes and interlaced her fingers with his, whispering in his ear, “Nobody knows it was you, calm down, we’ll be fine.”
They continued walking down the busy main street of Varrock until they came across the Blue Moon Inn. Adam pushed the door open and held it for Rachel and John to pass through, then walked in himself. The three of them walked up to the counter, and Adam drew the innkeeper’s attention.

“Excuse me? Miss?”
The woman turned around, she appeared to be in her late twenties, with black hair and inviting brown eyes, “Yes, sir? How may I help you?”
“Do you have a room we could take, one big enough for three people?”
“Sure do. Here’s the key, room four, it’s the second door on your right upstairs. It’s a hundred gold pieces for one night,” the woman said before smiling brightly and pulling out a key, placing it in Adam’s open palm.
“That’s fine,” Adam said before fumbling in his backpack for the one night fee and handing it over to the woman.
They walked up the stairs, following Adam’s lead. They came to room four and walked in, it wasn’t huge, but it was far better than the two ruined houses they had stayed in last night. There were three beds, with nightstands by each one, a candle on a small desk in the corner, and a shabby rug. Most importantly, however, there was a roof.
They had just gotten settled when a loud ring echoed throughout the city, once, twice, three times. They all knew what it was: the city-wide alarm. The trio grabbed their weapons and bolted for the door, out into the street to see what was going on.
