“Excuse me? Miss?”
The woman turned around, she appeared to be in her late twenties, with black hair and inviting brown eyes, “Yes, sir? How may I help you?”
“Do you have a room we could take, one big enough for three people?”
“Sure do. Here’s the key, room four, it’s the second door on your right upstairs. It’s a hundred gold pieces for one night,” the woman said before smiling brightly and pulling out a key, placing it in Adam’s open palm.
“That’s fine,” Adam said before fumbling in his backpack for the one night fee and handing it over to the woman.
They walked up the stairs, following Adam’s lead. They came to room four and walked in, it wasn’t huge, but it was far better than the two ruined houses they had stayed in last night. There were three beds, with nightstands by each one, a candle on a small desk in the corner, and a shabby rug. Most importantly, however, there was a roof.
They had just gotten settled when a loud ring echoed throughout the city, once, twice, three times. They all knew what it was: the city-wide alarm. The trio grabbed their weapons and bolted for the door, out into the street to see what was going on.
