×××Part Two: John×××
×Chapter 16×
×Table Talk×
Adam bolted upright and gasped for air. He stood up and realized that he had died. Adam suddenly felt nauseous; he bent over and threw up onto the bright green grass that was below his feet. He stumbled over to a tree for support and reached behind himself and felt his back for the shaft of the fatal arrow. There was no hint of abnormality except for a small hole in the cloth of his prison rags.
Adam’s teeth chattered, it was so cold even though the place he was in was filled with lush, tropical plants. Morning mist hovered over the ground at his feet. Adam wrapped his arms across his chest and shivered in the bracing air. With every one of his shallow breaths a puff of fog escaped his bluish lips. Adam smoothed back one of his long black bangs against his head. His hair had grown considerably during his imprisonment. He began walking. He did not know where he was going but he needed to find someone to tell him where he was. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he loped through the short, neatly kempt grass searching for any sign of human life.

After walking for what he was sure was days the brightness of the sky had not changed in the slightest. There was certain energy in the air that seemed to be sustaining him. It seemed as if it was always day in this place, there was no darkness to obscure the light here. It felt as if there was no evil in the whole land.
A thin footpath opened up before Adam; it was his first sign of civilization on this surreal journey. Adam walked proudly along the path, his head held high. He did not feel any fatigue from his long trek, nor felt any pain from the injury that he was certain ended his life. All he could perceive was the cold and he wanted to get out of it and be warm again.

Adam passed by leafy ferns and strange trees on his way along the path, he was walking past a flowering plant of some kind when he saw something square planted in the ground. It was a fencepost that had been hammered into the ground and it connected to another, and that one to yet another, and off into the distance. Adam squinted but he could not see the end of the fence, but it bordered the path he was following. He must be close to someone that could help him.
The path ended but Adam no longer needed any guidance to civilization. He was looking at a grass covered knoll which the fence circled around before vanishing behind a small cabin. The sun appeared directly behind the cabin, frozen in a permanent dawn the sun remained still. Color flowed across the hill and the trees cast long shadows in what Adam was now sure was west. The hill obscured all but a sliver of the sun and everything on Adam’s side was in shadow.
Adam walked up to the door and was about to knock but it swung open before he could. In the doorway stood a man who appeared to be far older than most people on Gielinor. The man was wearing flowing green robes and a snake-like symbol wound down the front of them. He had long silvery hair and a beard that hung down to his knees. His beard was covered in overlapping green bands of some unknown metal which formed a checkered pattern over his hair. His eyes were a piercing green that radiated deep understanding and kindness. He was smiling delicately as if he was very familiar with Adam and had known him a long time.
Adam was just about to open his mouth to explain his purpose but was interrupted, in a very calm voice the elderly man spoke, “Yes, Adam, we have been expecting you a while now.* Adam’s jaw perceptibly dropped as his words were stolen from his mouth. The old man placed his hand on Adam’s shoulder and ushered him into the warm, one-room cabin.

The cabin was sparsely furnished on the inside; there was a limestone fireplace, a bookcase stocked with thick volumes, a fire pit, a fancy mahogany table, three carved mahogany chairs, and a rug with a picture of a tree expertly embroidered into it. Flames sprouted forth from a pile of eternally burning logs in the hearth and the room glowed with warmth in the early morning cold.
Another man was seated inside, contentedly sipping a cup of warm tea. He seemed to be just as aged as the man who answered the door, but his head was bald and his beard was shorter and less decorated. He was wearing sky blue robes that folded on the legs and arms, these robes were embroidered with a golden star shape. His eyes were a saintly blue. As the eyes shifted to glance at Adam they brightened and the man smiled while he continued to drink his tea.
“Sit, sit Adam. There is tea and a warm biscuit on the table for you,” the man in the green robes gestured to the table.
Adam took his seat and the man in green began to speak again, “My friend and I have just been discussing matters of the world. We were waiting here for our chance to speak with you.”
Adam was deeply confused; he looked quizzically from one man to the other, searching for an answer.
This time the man in blue spoke, “So, it appears you have died. Let me be the first to welcome you. This is Limbo.”
As soon as he heard this Adam practically fell into his chair, landing with a thump as he stared at the two in disbelief. When he first realized he was dead it had compelled him to stand, to proclaim his existence. But now the full weight of his predicament fell on him and forced him into his chair.
“So I really am…dead?”
The man in blue replied, “Ah yes, quite a shame that you are. But nothing is really permanent. You see, death is just a state of life. It is the in between of life, hence why you are in Limbo.”
“So what am I still doing here? I want to be alive again!” Adam shouted.

The man in green calmly explained, “You are aware of the significance of the demon horns, right?”
Adam’* expression changed from anger to shame, “No.*
*Well then, that is why you are still here,” said the man in green. “Now sit and listen to us; we will explain everything.”
The blue garbed man took a breath, preparing to make what seemed like a well practiced speech, “The demon horns represent Zamorak: the vilest of gods. He was once one of the Mahjarrat, but an encounter with Zaros, another god, changed him into an evil god with a black heart and desires to rule over all existence.”
The man in green gave Adam some time to soak up this speech before he continued the story, “Then, we come to you, Adam. We have watched you and we always knew you were special. Zamorak was injured during the God Wars; the piece of him that was injured was a part of his soul. It wandered Gielinor searching for a host for many centuries. At your birth it immediately sought you out and became one with you.”
Adam was deeply absorbed by this point and continued to listen intently while the man in blue picked up the story, “You know the demon that you can manifest into?” Adam shook his head. “Well, Zamorak found out about you being a vessel for his soul. You see, eventually Zamorak’s soul fragment will absorb your being completely and your body will become a god, similar to Zamorak. Zamorak needs to be able to kill you to take this fragment, but doing that would set his soul free to roam the world, getting him just another host. Zamorak somehow got wind of an artifact of the Third Age that can destroy souls, but he is unable to find it. He is going to burn all of Gielinor to the ground to find it and be assured that only one evil god exists.”

The man in green was ready once more to speak, “Two things have come of this. He has been trying to incapacitate you, as he has found out about the Sandstone Prophecy, which dictates that you should be the one to save the world. The archer that nearly killed you that day in the Dueling Arena was one of his more powerful minions. The other is, rather unfortunate, and goes way back. Your father left you because of the demon manifesting inside of you. One day, while you were in his care as an infant, you had a temper tantrum. The part of Zamorak’s soul took over. You nearly killed him, but you managed to calm down first. He left the very next day, scared of his own son.”
Adam could hardly absorb so much information at once, he felt paralyzed by the amount of responsibility on his shoulders. “Why would Zamorak’s soul choose me though? Why are you telling me all this if I’m dead? How do you know so much about me? Why are you helping me?”
There was a pause before the man in green spoke, “You are pure, you have so much good in you. Zamorak’s purpose is to destroy good, so it is no surprise that his soul sought to taint your purity.” The man in green smiled once more, “About your other questions…it’s my world, and I want to save it. You will find out the rest on your own.” At this he snapped his fingers and Adam’s vision went black.

Adam was burning, there was something irritating his face, it was dusty and coarse and was preventing him from breathing. He rolled over and took a breath. Suddenly he heard a voice, “Adam? Adam! You’re alive!” Adam squinted, everything was blurry. He sat up and rubbed his eyes with his fists. He opened his eyes as Rachel pounced on him in an elated hug.
“Adam! I thought you were dead for sure!”
Adam felt his back, the arrow was gone.
Memories of the never-changing land rushed into his head, “I was.”
