The Vault

For several long, tense moments, Leon stared Reyner down. Nobody spoke. Nobody move.

Then, finally, Leon broke the silence.

"Not alone, you won't,"
Leon declared.
"Whoever took the Amulet and Scroll to Wheelton has magic - magic beyond our understanding. Something no Scion can face alone. And something that mundane weapons are useless against."
He paused for a few moments to let his words sink in.

"We must head to Wheelton - as many of us as can be spared, and as quickly as possible. The Palace is not secure, and every moment we waste is one where one of the Three Tenets remain unfulfilled. The items must be recovered at all costs, and whoever took them must be destroyed at all costs,"
he spoke gravely.
"It is likely a trap, but I see little other choice."

Chloelle frowns at the thought.

"Is it wise for Scions to leave the palace at this time?"
She asks carefully, folding her arms.
"I've never left the capital, so I have no idea what Wheelton would be like. But we would be easy targets there, would we not? If we go there en masse, whoever killed father might take the opportunity to strike at us there. We might even risk them attacking the innocents who live there just to take us down. Can we risk their safety for this?"

"The palace is not safe,"
Leon replied.
"Whoever our enemy is, they have shown themselves capable of striking into the very heart of the most secure building in the world, killing the most important person in the world, in a way that was impossible to predict or prevent. They then went on to steal two of our most vital artifacts, which were kept securely in an impregnable vault that nobody save I and my brother should have known about."

He shook his head.
"We must assume they are capable of striking at us whenever and wherever they wish. No matter where we are, we are in danger. But the longer the realm goes without a ruler, the longer the entire realm and everyone in it remains in danger. I do not like it, but what would you have us do instead?"

"It is true that the palace is not safe - of that I am aware. But for one thing, we need to be certain that our enemy does not take advantage of our absence by moving in themselves. It needs to be secured at least to avoid that,"
Chloelle answers with a nod, her brow furrowed.
"On top of that, if all Scions move out, we are a target even with our powers. We do not know what they are capable of - if they can murder the King, of all people, in the middle of his home...Who knows what else they are capable of?"

She glances around at everyone in the room. Then exhales sharply.
"Do not get me wrong - I know how important the mission is. I just don't think it's a strategically sound idea to have all Scions head out. I also don't think having a full retinue is a good idea either. Whoever goes would have to do so in disguise, if only to limit the possibility of being caught out by the enemy, and limiting the danger to the locals of Wheelton. Wouldn't you agree?"

Leon stared at the map. It was clear he was weighing the best of what he considered to be a very bad list of options.
"I have no authority to command any of you to go anywhere,"
he finally conceded.
"We will gather up the rest of your siblings, appraise them of the situation, and see who among them are willing to travel to Wheelton. They can then decide amongst themselves how they wish to do so."

-----

And so, after another hour, all the Scions had been summoned back to the Crisis Room. There, Kathlyn and Adrienne filled everyone in on the official narrative regarding the next heir: as far as the court and most of the Realm knew, there is one, but is being held secret in order to protect the identity of said heir.

Leon then went on to explain the situation. Both the Scroll and the Amulet were in Wheelton - a revelation which made Roland glare suspicious daggers at Reyner. Now, what they needed were volunteers - those who could travel to Wheelton, track down the missing items, kill or apprehend whoever stole them, and bring them back to the capital. It was dangerous task, Leon stressed. The remainder would stay in the capital and help keep order.

"I will go!"
Roland declared, stepping forward without hesitation.
"I'll bring the Fury of House Arenar down on those bastards."

Chloelle remains silent throughout the explanation. She has nothing more to contribute after all. She is content to listen to the conversation, curious to see who else would remain home. Of course Roland volunteered to go.

"As the secondborn Princess, I feel it is nothing less than my duty to remain here and hold the fort, as it were,"
she announces at last, placing a hand on her chest and bowing her head in a humble and demure fashion.
"My heart goes with the brothers and sisters who would go on this quest - but I fear I would only get in the way. I pray you will be able to find those responsible without coming to harm."
She offers a gentle smile, tilting her head in an innocent manner.

While the announcement of where the amulet and scroll were may have made some people more suspicious of Reyner, for Ariadne it had almost the opposite effect. In her eyes, if Reyner was the one responsible, there wouldn’t be so many indicators that it came from where he was lord. It made no sense to set it up like that, and given the small bit of personality and the actions he’d taken so far, it wouldn’t fit him to be running something like that. This was assuming he wasn’t simply acting, but that wouldn’t match what he had done in Wheelton thus far.

Unlike Roland, her response was not immediate, as there was more she felt she needed to consider. There would be plenty going on in the capital, but as the oversight was all she would be doing, that could be done by her officers. They were as capable as she was in dealing with something like this, if only because none of them had before. Her own strength would of course be of use should there be problems arising that needed it, but it was more likely that her strengths would be better suited in the hunt for the culprit. She could help in both…but, in her eyes, one needed her more.

I will go as well.
” she announced. “
My officers can command the forces effectively in my absence, but the less people with the greatest effectiveness that can go, the better.

On that subject, she turned to Reyner. This might be an awkward question to ask, but she wanted his opinion on the matter seeing as they were headed to his territory. Some might question her trust in him answering honestly at this point, but she saw no reason to treat him as an enemy.

Reyner, what are your thoughts on the best way to approach this? Will bringing a contingent of soldiers be an asset, or will they be a detriment? You know the territory better than anyone here, and I do not wish to cause any harm to your people during our investigation.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

Chloelle and Leon discussed circumstances. Indeed, nowhere was safe, and the prospect of dangers suddenly flying out portals was quite unnerving.

“If defending doesn’t work, we can only attack,” Dalhover remarked after the two finished. “Until then, we will converse with the other Scions.”

* * *

Roland was, perhaps unsurprisingly, the first to announce his determination to venture to Wheeton. Dalhover slightly smiled at that. “I too, will go. We must bring the fight to the enemy. Leave them no rest until we find them.”

Chloelle, however, was hesitant to journey beyond the walls, which was understandable considering what transpired in so little time.

Ariadne asked Reyner his course of action...

Adrienne followed the messenger back to the Crisis Room. For a room as oft unused as this one, she was beginning to hope she’d never have to step foot in there again. Kathlyn and the diplomat shared with the others how they’d spun the news to the other nobles. Rie could only hope that her siblings were smart enough to stick to that story, but she knew they all had their own ideas of the “right way” to proceed and that she’d be left to clean up any of the messes caused.

Still, Leon updated the Scions on the situation. Apparently, the Scroll and Amulet had registered to be in Wheelton, at least according to Eva’s tracking power. Rie caught Roland glaring at Reyner, and though the elf also immediately wondered what the newest Scion might know, she wasn’t glaring at him. She watched him briefly, but Leon continued to speak.

Chloelle responded first, before Rie could get a word in. It seemed the two had decided that the Scions would be split between staying at home and heading out on an adventure to hopefully catch the murderer and reclaim the Scroll and the Amulet. Chloelle made a show of accepting her duty to stay at the castle, which Rie nodded to. Ariadne agreed to join Roland on the adventure, which only made Rie’s decision all the more painful.

I-
” Adrienne started, her voice catching on a lump in her throat. She swallowed. “
I will stay at the castle. We all know how the court can be, and now more than ever we need to maintain a strong presence at home.

She paused, her eyes glancing at a few of the Scions and retainers who had agreed to join the adventure. “
I will do what I can using my connections, and maybe something can yet be learned from the residents here. But please…
” Rie’s eyes landed on Ria. “
Please be careful out there.
I just play FFXIV at this point. DC: Crystal

The tension drawn from Reyner's explanation suffused the entire room. It was a relief when Leon raised his remarks, and Eva followed his short exchange with Chloelle quietly, listening closely as they described their positions. Eva nodded solemnly with Leon's conclusion, the discussion ending such that each could contemplate the best course of action, and how each could contribute to such an endeavor. She would have much to think about over the coming hour.

--

Brought once more to the Crisis Room, Eva noted carefully the official position on the current situation, and what would be done in actuality to address it, nodding silently. People slowly began declaring their intentions; whether they would stay or go. Ariadne addressed Reyner, who, as lord of Wheelton, would likely know the location better than anyone else in attendance. Eva waited patiently for his response—she would have to think on his words—and then stated her tentative remarks.

"I think I would be most helpful in the expedition party. Having already established a connection with the artifacts, my capabilities will only become more accurate as I draw near them."
