Adrienne had, of course, frequented the Crisis Room in times prior. Its detailed map of Tavia and relative calm had provided her a measure of focus when dealing in diplomacy. Very few people would interrupt her there as she mentally walked through the map of the lands, seeking to reconcile this trade agreement or that border dispute. But today's use was far more of a crisis, and one that called upon every one of the Scions as well as their most-trusted advisor.

Uncle Leon explained that the Vault had been robbed of both The Scroll and a previously unheard-of Amulet.

After Leon spoke his piece, Flynn added that he could not see the king's spirit as he died. Adrienne gnawed her lower lip, deep in thought. The elaboration of how his powers worked shocked her, but she was more concerned with trying to piece together how that fact might have contributed to the king's dying thoughts. Dalhover spoke next, then Ria, who voiced concerns about the assassin's end goals.

Leon spoke once more, this time with a reluctance and hesitance that was out-of-place on the man's tone. He spoke of some previous Scions' unworthiness of the throne - a small gasp escaped Rie's lips at this suggestion, as the idea was absolutely absurd. Sure, there had been talk... But the Scions were supposed to all be held to a higher standard, right? Her mind travelled briefly to her siblings, trying to picture who among them was the most worthy to step up and ascend. But she forced that thought down quickly, as it would help the situation very little - less, if they never recovered the amulet.

A chill passed Adrienne's spine as Leon suggested that the potential-Scion's goal may be to undo the Three Tenets. But after stating that each of the Scions must work perfectly together, as this was not the time to show weakness in the family, Leon asked the rest of the room if anyone had any further information.

Rie cleared her throat. Having been rushed to the Crisis Room, she still hadn't had

a chance to talk to Flynn in confidence, but she couldn't conscience keeping this information from her siblings.
"Actually..."
she started, her voice catching for a moment as her father's dying moments echoed in her head once more.
"I don't know if it's relevant, but I... Felt him die. He..."
Rie's voice caught again, tears streaming her cheeks and betraying a measure of her internal pain.
"He was most afraid of what came after. I was hoping Flynn might be able to shed some light on what that might mean. Wouldn't he... Wouldn't he come back?"
she asked, her eyes quickly dashed to meet Flynn's - hoping against hope that he would have any idea why their father would fear the reincarnation that supposedly followed death.

Eva tensed as she was hugged, but after a moment relaxed and returned the gesture. Eva was glad Adrienne was here. Perhaps she could be glad to be here too.

--

Evalyne was brought with the rest of the Scions to the crisis room. The hour preceding seemed to pass without her notice. So much had happened today, and yet still more dreadful news was to be imparted. She nodded dolefully as the situation was explained, but for a brief moment scowled at Roland's provocation. He had not so much as said a polite hello to her all day—returned after seven years to the same routine. Perhaps he had not matured, but, if she had developed the will, she hoped not to grace his behavior with a response.

The situation seemed to worsen as the conversation continued. The absence of souls, suggestions about the Ascension that would be seditious in other contexts. Eva held her wrist in her hand beneath the table in a futile attempt to comfort herself.

At a suitable moment in the conversation, perhaps after someone more knowledgeable in the workings of the afterlife responded to Adrienne, Eva spoke. Although she did her best to address the whole room, she mostly leered at Roland.
"I can... certainly do my best in attempting to track down the items, but I don't know if it would be so simple. I've never actually seen these things—not an impossible obstacle, but it would certainly make things more difficult.
"Further, my magic seems to be... disrupted by the effects of whatever... their powers are."
She shuddered at the thought.
"This will be a serious challenge for my abilities, but I think I can handle it."

Interesting...
" Flynn mused after Leon's follow-up, not seeming surprised by what he heard. Then old whispers and stories of past Scions were more than rumour; there was more to succession than to simply be named the heir, more steps than the ritual they knew near nothing about - actual parameters or conditions were involved. What, after all, determined whether one was 'worthy' to sit upon the throne or not? His curious mind wondered if he, for all his flaws, was one who could be considered 'worthy' by whatever being made that decision. A piece of the Lifebringer's consciousness? An ancient magic? Something else? Of course such thoughts were no doubt blasphemous, but that would not, could not, stop the hungry seeker of knowledge and truths that was the Black Prince.

But alas, his everlasting curiosity had no place for the topic - not here, not now. His hand remained at his chin in thought even as his eyes met Rie's, the subtle desperation for an answer that lay in her voice not lost on him. He allowed himself some more moments to consider what she had added, frowning slightly as a couple of pieces connected in his mind.

"From all I know I do not believe it was the weapon or portal that took father's soul, I would have caught even a glimpse of it leaving him - whether to enter the blade or through the portal, but there was not even a hint of it. If that was what happened then whoever did so would have to be countless times more skilled in my specialization than I... and I say this without a hint of boast; I am very good at what I do."
It was Ria's thoughts he addressed first, spoken as a matter of fact rather than misplaced pride. If nothing else, it was more than clear than Flynn believed his own words. More than that, not a one of the people present would be able to recall a time the prince had told them a lie.

"If father's last feelings were those of fear of what would come after for him... Then I don't believe this will bring any comfort, but it seems to me that father was aware of his situation. Not that of a coming assassin, but that his soul was not where it should be - and that when he died his soul would not find its way to reincarnation."
He paused only briefly, lowering his hand and letting his eyes shift across the room once again.
"Either because he was aware his soul was not there and, thus, would not go on to reincarnate. Or because he knew something we do not about reincarnation..."
He added one last part, almost as an afterthought, as if it were not deeply blasphemous.
"...if reincarnation is what happens when we die, of course."

In a normal circumstance, or perhaps more accurately before today, what Leon said would have allayed any fears Ariadne might have had. The thought that anyone considered unworthy would even have a chance of ascending would have been absolutely unthinkable. Now, though, the small seed of doubt couldn’t yet be removed. What had happened had shaken her enough that such things were unable to be removed from her mind entirely. There were too many what if’s that she did not want to entertain, yet refused to be ignored.

The thought that anyone would actually want to break the Three Tenants, though…that was absolutely ridiculous. Why would anyone want to put the world at risk like that? What would they gain? It would be trading a stable world for one of absolute uncertainty, and likely one where there was no longer any future. Just thinking about it made no sense, and if that was what this unknown scion wished…well, how could they hope to understand what they were planning?

Evalyne spoke up, answering Roland’s suggestion - or demand, more like - with an affirmation. That was one of their best leads right now, and although Ariadne had varying thoughts about how successful it might be it was good to see that their sister had confidence in the fact that it would work despite the interference. That was something that would, at least, be relatively simple to follow up on.

Moments later, though, it was Flynn that once again drew Ariadne’s attention. Her own thoughts were shut down, but that was fine, as they had not been spoken through having knowledge of the subject. It was good as well since it ruled out varying outlying theories, and the less they had to deal with the better.

Rie’s revelation was what triggered the more shocking part of Flynn’s thought process, though. Knowing that their father had been afraid of what had come after was bad enough, as it brought forth the question of why , but Flynn’s almost casual remarks that were nothing other than complete blasphemy just brought it to another level. The worst part, though, was that Flynn had enough knowledge of this subject through his magic that she couldn’t just dismiss what he said…and she trusted her brother enough that she had to accept he may be saying something with merit.

Flynn,
” she said, her voice quiet and holding a great amount of trepidation, “
What you said goes against everything we have been taught. What are you implying? Why would everyone be lying?

Hearing the voice of Ria the prince turned his gaze towards her, seeming a tad bemused for a second before apparently coming to a realization - raising his hands as a show of peace even as he pressed on to speak, making to reply before others could jump in on what he had said as well.

"My words were not intended as an accusation that everyone has been lying, dear Ria. I speak from both what I know and what I don't know; what I do know is that I have yet to witness the reincarnation of a soul, none have soared into a pregnant belly to take root while I have been present at least, but that does not itself disprove anything,"
He replied, pressing to ease some of the difficulties his words may spark in his siblings. But he had more to say.
"What else I do know is that father's soul was not where it should have been, and that he feared what followed his death - my takeaway is that these things are connected, that father knew his soul was not in place, and thus he would either not reincarnate or believed there was something more to it than what we know."
It reiterated his thoughts from before, but pushed on further to address what was likely the largest concern of blasphemy.

"Now we move on to what I don't know; whether we truly do reincarnate when we die. None alive can know for certain, only believe, for it is only when we pass on that it takes place - and as one alive who has seen that souls are real and do go somewhere when death comes, I know that something occurs, but do not yet understand what. Could reincarnation be the truth of life after death? Most certainly. So too could it not be, I simply do not know until I have seen it."

He settled back, all too aware he had gotten them sidetracked with his careless words.
"I think my tangent has sidetracked us from the point of this meeting, however. My apologies."

The Meeting

---

Roland rolled his eyes and it seemed like he was about to say something, but Derene interjected first.

"With all due respect, brother... perhaps you simply can't detect our father's soul?"
she asked.
"You've never seen a monarch die before. I don't believe you've ever seen another Scion die, either. Perhaps our souls are different? Did your... predecessors... leave any note on the subject?"

By 'predecessors' she of course meant those past Scions who were known to have engaged in necromancy. Many Scions left behind notes on their abilities in order to help guide future generations. In Flynn's case, only two Death Magic Scions had left behind notes of their own. One of them read as if they had been written by a madman, while the other was written in a variant of Sorusian that was so old it was almost like learning another language.

And no, they had not made any observations on whether or not a Scion's soul was different from a mundane soul.

Before Flynn could answer the subject, Roland cut in.
"I think you're all putting too much stock in this 'fear' our father felt,"
he argued.
"He was dying. Of course he'd be afraid. Even if he'll come back in another life, there's no telling how long that will take, and he won't have any of his memories when he's born of anew. Unless I'm the only one who doesn't have memories from a past life?"
He raised a challenging eyebrow. The question was obviously rhetorical.

"Or maybe he didn't think he lived a worthy enough life to be reborn as a Scion in the next..."
Kathlyn whispered. Gallus gave a barely-perceptible nod at that.

For a moment, Roland seemed shocked. Then his expression hardened into outrage. His hand fell to the sword belted at his hip.
"If you weren't my sister, I would strike you down where you stand!"
he snarled.

"Enough!"
Leon snapped.
"She did not say your father was unworthy, only that he may have felt himself unworthy. Which would explain his reaction, if true. We must explore every possibility, and we cannot afford to threaten one another just because we don't like what we hear. So, enough."

"Who made you King?"
Roland whispered under his breath, but his hand left the sword.
