Adrienne let her hand drift downwards, recognizing that her brother would not be accepting it. It pained her to see him so upset, even if he childishly accused a substantial portion of the population.

Policing her face back into a neutral expression, she turned back toward the crowd. Dalhover made an absolutely absurd claim - even compared to her younger brother's. A Scion? Murdering our father? Adrienne thought, mulling over the possibility. None in this room seemed capable, to say nothing of the supposed portal magic involved.

But more pressing, in her mind, was how quickly this speculation ramped up. The King hadn't even been dead an hour before baseless accusations were thrown around, and this sort of thing caused lots of problems for diplomats. Before she could interject and request that non-family be taken to the dining hall, her uncle mentioned the Scroll of Succession. Doubtless, the nobles in the room wouldn't obey directions to leave the royal family now that the Scroll had been mentioned.

"The Scroll..."
she said, letting her voice trail off as she swallowed a lump in her throat.
"How long will it take to bring it here?"
Needless to say, she'd not run across the Scroll's use during her life, and though she had read about its importance in history, she had no idea quite what the protocols were, especially in the modern era.
I just play FFXIV at this point. DC: Crystal

Flynn took the proferred knife as the situation, at least on Roland's side, was calmed - for the moment at least. Whether Reyner was settled by the rest of the Scions siding against Roland on the issue would remain to be seen. However, the Black Prince turned his attention to the knife he now held - narrowing his gaze as he examined it, making used of his magical sense to determine if the weapon was in any way magical. His ears perked to the conversation happening around him but he didn't allow himself to get sidetracked as of yet, not until he came to his conclusion.

Thankfully the knife did not seem to be enchanted in any way. That, however, didn't settle Flynn as much as the knowledge might settle the others once he told them. If the knife was no more than a regular knife, then what had happened to his father's soul? The prince had witnessed what had happened from the moment the knife landed, his eyes hadn't left his father for long at any point - far too short a time for his soul to have exited his body and drifted to the unknown without Flynn spotting it. It was never that fast. But the body... a simple glance was all he needed to see the soul had not remained within, either.

Then, if it was not the knife - what had happened to father's soul?

Without all the pieces of the puzzle he was unable to come up with an answer, thus returning to the conversation at hand. His revelations about what he had seen could wait until only his family would be able to hear; the last thing they needed was for word to get out that the king's soul was missing. That aside, as he realized they were discussing the scroll of succession a thought struck him that made his eyes widen slightly. He lowered his tone to keep his words between the surrounding family members.

" Uncle... if portal magic was thought to be myth, then the scroll's defences likely wouldn't account for such a thing. "

Reyner slowly relaxed as tensions in the room shifted a few more times and it became clear that the proposed prosecution was not going to happen – yet anyway. A few of the other goblins in attendance had drifted more toward Reyner’s side of the room, understandably nervous about what might befall them in the throes of less favorable scions.

Inferi said :
"Reyner, please, lower your weapons.
” she said, her tone pleading with him as she stopped several feet away. “
Nobody will harm them, I swear. I will not allow it. More people will not die for this."

“My word...” Reyner huffed “...still stands. Anyone who dares to touch them, answers to me.” he said calmly. The cold certainty in his voice was even more intimidating than the prior rage, and his frigid gaze met Ariadne’s not with disdain, but with absolute resolve.

He then wordlessly returned both warhammers up his sleeves as they magically transformed back into vambraces. Now seemingly unarmed, he patted Golga on the shoulder, releasing his hold on her. She and her sister stayed close and watched the room, but also appeared to calm quite a bit at the signal from their lord.

The two old men didn’t succeed in their views, Dalhover’s paranoia largely disagreed upon, and Leon’s intent for the Scroll presumably not able to work as Flynn alluded.

Indeed, the older generation tended to think differently than the younger.

Dalhover scanned the area for portals, though no more seemed to appear. “Hopefully, security around the Scroll of Succession remains strong." He looked back at The King's body. "Hm, it’s as if the portal sucked out the king’s life?” Unable to find an answer, the old knight...

Once again, everything seemed to calm. Roland’s rage appeared to be quelled, at least for the moment, and the discussion once again turned to what had actually happened. Their own conclusions were essentially the only answers the Ariadne had been able to think of in the brief moments before she had stepped towards Reyner, and she agreed with Leon that the implications were most certainly not something she liked. They knew next to nothing about portal magic itself, and without knowing what it actually required to summon it, there wasn’t any way they could even rule out those in attendance.

It wasn’t a secret that generic magic could be used alongside their specialty…so what if a portal of that size was, in practice, generic?

Those thoughts were for later, though. Reyner had made no further actions, but she had not expected it without someone else moving in. In truth, she would have almost preferred someone else had so that they could have been the one she spoke to, for she did not believe Reyner was in any way wrong for his declaration. The resolve in his gaze was enough to make her confident he would not do anything further without provocation, and for her, that was more than enough.

Meeting his gaze for a moment, she didn’t say anything more, but rather gave him a single nod before stepping back. There was no need to speak; his words were understood and there was nothing for her to add.

Turning back to the rest of her siblings, she had not been close enough to hear Flynn’s comment, and so said nothing about it even as her own thoughts turned to the same vein. Dalhover’s comment only lent itself to the paranoia that was beginning to build up inside. If something had happened to the scroll, then there would be no succession. And without that...well, there was no way to tell, and that what was so frightening.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

As soon as things began settling down and there was no risk of war suddenly breaking out, Chloelle calmed herself a bit more - admittedly still clinging onto Flynn's arm as if he was a firm rock keeping her up in the middle of a storm. She couldn't help herself - she looked back at the corpse of the King, as if to confirm once again that he was indeed dead.

Her lips pressed into a thin line, and she turned back to the conversation at hand.
"We...We should secure the palace and ensure all of our guests get home safe and sound,"
she managed to speak up at last.
"The celebrations cannot continue with the King dead. Whilst we handle the guests, some of us should go confirm the Scroll's safety and retrieve it. If it's safe, we can meet together and read what it says. If not...Then we still need to meet together and decide the best way to find it. Because the only other option will be for us to fight it out - and I would not wish to fight any of my beloved brothers and sisters."

The shock of the situation seemed to have eased off a little, allowing her to speak clearly and appear to come to her senses. She looked up at Flynn, her eyebrows sloping up towards the middle in the form of a sad and enquiring expression.
"Brother?"
She asked gently.
Everyone has the potential to be an asshat in a flower crown.

Eva curtsied as Adrienne stepped aside to join Gallus in a dance, and she turned back to Dalhover, only to hear his solemn reply.
"Oh. I'm so sorry to hear that. My most sincere condolences,"
she said, taken aback.
"I have such fond memories of her company, and I know how close-"

She was interrupted as something intruded on her awareness. There was a flash of green far back in the room, near the king. As soon as she saw it, her magical awareness of it interrupted her thinking. It should not be. Space shouldn't bend like that, fold like that. There, it was, a room, a room inside. It was north of her, but sensing to it, she also felt a pull to somewhere not-north. Her mind twisted as if a wet cloth being wrung out. Her eyes glazed.

It was over before she realized it had even happened. She realized that she was seated at a chair a short distance away from where she had been standing. Nobility surrounded her, accusing her with a glance, terrified of something beyond her vision to the throne. Off in the distance, she could hear arguing. Was it... Flynn? Or the new Scion? Named, what, Raina? That can't be right. She stood up uneasily. Someone was steadying her, but she brushed them off, and stumbled toward the throne. She approached; someone mentioned the Scroll of Succession. That can't be right. This can't be right.

There was blood pooling near the throne. Flynn held a dripping knife. Her father on the ground, her family arguing directly over him. She felt sick. She found herself laying a short distance away on the floor, tears accumulating in hot stinging droplets and falling off her face. Stifling a sob. This can't be right. This can't be right.

The Throne Room

Upon Flynn's implication that the Scroll might have been stolen in the same manner through which the King was slain, Leon's eyes widened. Disregarding all other conversations and happenings in the room, their uncle knelt at the King's side. The pool of blood stained his knees, but he paid it no mind. He reached for a necklace around his brother's throat and pulled it off - it was a key.

Then, he stood.
"Flynn. Chloelle. Come with me,"
he ordered. Then after a moment's thought, he added:
"Dalhover, you come too. The rest of you, stay here."
And without waiting to see if any of them were actually complying, Leon rushed off toward a side door - going as fast as was humanly possible without actually jogging or running.

---

Meanwhile, Gallus had noticed a particularly large cluster of nobles in the room, and strangely, many of them were focused on something happening within the cluster rather than on the King's body or on the conversing Scions. That was unusual. So, he strode toward the mass of aristocracy and pushed his way through.

Then he saw what they were gathered around. His sister, Eva, lying prone on the floor.
"Back away,"
he ordered at once. Most didn't seem to hear him.
"Get away from her!"
he shouted. The Prince had never been one to raise his voice in anger, and that seemed to do the trick. Like a swarm of ants they dispersed, moving to other more vacant corners of the room.

With the crowd gone, Gallus knelt beside his sister.
"Eva,"
he said, noting that she still seemed to be breathing, conscious, and uninjured.
"What's wrong?"

Flynn had little time to respond to Chloelle's words before their uncle Leon moved to action, taking what Flynn had mentioned seriously and taking a key from the king's body before ordering most of the Scions to remain - all but for Flynn and Chloelle. Dalhover was already on Prince Leon's heels while, behind them, a commotion seemed to have started over something that he was unable to see. With his uncle already marching out of the room and Chloelle clinging to his arm, however, the prince couldn't investigate. The other Scions would manage without him, they had for years already, after all.

He set the knife down on the steps beside the king's body and made to follow after their uncle, setting his now free hand upon Chloelle's arm as she clung to him - guiding her with him as they went. He talked as they walked.

" There will be no need to fight amidst ourselves, Chlo, " He replied, mind racing as they took their leave of the crowded throne room. " Should the scroll have been taken - Lifebringer forfend - there are other ways than fighting to establish who should take the crown. "

Such methods worked in neighbouring lands, albeit for titles lesser than those of royalty. In truth, Flynn could see the crown going to the Scion who had best proven their abilities to lead, rule and guide. Who that was? Right now he didn't know. Not for certain.
