Prince Gallus had not yet reacted to her questioning when Adrienne felt a sharp fear in her mind. She stumbled over the next step or two of dance before excusing herself to examine the source – their father. Why would he be so afraid?

As she focused more on the feeling, she felt intense pain buried under the pure terror of the unknown. Adrienne forced her hands into fists, trying not to lose herself in the wave of emotion washing over her. As she saw the king tumble down the stairs, it was increasingly difficult to tell where her terror stopped and his began. But the strangest tinge of terror was present. The king was… afraid, but not of death. King Yareth was afraid of what came after.

Why would he be afraid of reincarnation?

Still – she could mull that passing thought over later. Flynn reached the king’s side at the same time as Uncle Leon, mere moments too late. Chloelle was there a moment later, dropping at their shared father’s side.

Adrienne forcibly shut off all of her empathic magic. Hearing others’ pain was going to be more than enough, she didn’t need to add to it by feeling it as well. She’d already felt her father’s emotional conscience fade away... Finding her twin, she sent one quick telepathic message:

“Rouse the military. We need as many guards as possible to control the panic.”

Flynn called out to a guard captain to do what she’d just called for Ariadne to do. Princess Adrienne stepped up to address the mass of panicking nobles. Chaos, disorder, and panic would only worsen this event – she’d seen similar, though far less grave, effects in her time as a diplomat. Projecting her voice as clearly as she could, Adrienne said,
“Friends of the realm, please follow the directions of the guards. If you need lodgings in the city, the palace will welcome you – simply speak to the guards nearest you. And…”
The empath’s hands shook slightly as she

found some of the most panicked individuals in the room. She reached out to them, mentally, and tried to rally them into some level of composure. The energy she used to connect to so many people was taking its toll – she’d need to rest soon. Sooner than she had a real chance to, she feared.

But hopefully, less panic would ensue if fewer people were already panicking. She looked back to the crowd at large, finishing her sentence.
“Please remember to breathe. Panic at this stage could be exactly what the attacker is looking for. Whoever did this cannot win,”
she said, forcing her face into a mask of calm.

Dalhover needed a few seconds to process what happened, which had interrupted conversation with Eva. The old knight expected some chitchat about his late wife, but instead, a little portal appeared and a blade pierced the king’s neck.

Flynn reached his sister Chloelle, not even Leon able to save the king in time.

The King’s dead? “Oh.” Amidst pandemonium, Dalhover calmly sipped his drink while the royal siblings spoke of organization of guards and soldiery. The military remaining dulled past many years... King suddenly assassinated... Strange relic found... Monsters sometimes marauding once in a while... The old knight finished his glass and spoke to himself, “Now is the best time for a rebellion to spark and then someone to communicate with the badlands monsters for an assault.”

If possible, Dalhover would attempt to organize guards into the situation or at least partake in the royals' attempts doing so. There was nothing else he could do thus far but kept an eye out for any magical portals or flying daggers!

Being on the far end of the hall, Ariadne was one of the majority that did not see the portal appear. In fact, although her awareness of the situation came about before most of the others, it was when the king fell that she could tell something was wrong. With no comment to her dance partner, she sprinted over until she could confirm what had happened, which was long enough for Flynn to take charge and do what she had been about to.

When the captain of the guard hesitated, she added her own voice to the command with a, “
You heard him. I don’t care what they’re doing, we need everyone mobilized. Send a third of the soldiers to lock down the palace, and have the rest close all city exits and watch every possible exit point. Nobody is allowed to leave, and control this chaos as best you can. No violence. Make sure you impress upon everyone that we are not to spread rumors, and make every attempt to keep the citizenry calm.

Her practiced posture and commanding voice might have made it seem like she was not phased, but for those who were looking, her fists, clenched so tightly that her nails were beginning to draw blood, told the true story. She might not have cared as much for their father as some of the scions, but it was supposed to be her duty to protect everyone in this kingdom, and she had very clearly just failed.

When the captain ran away, she turned to Flynn and asked, in a low voice, “

Reyner’s empty glass shattered across the polished floor as he instinctively jolted at the sound of commotion. His two warhammers had fallen into place in hand before the cup had even hit the floor, and the noble now scanned the room as calls for guards were made.

“Find Golga.” he commanded his goblin subordinate, interrupting her attempt to ask what was going on.

“-um… yes!” Gotha replied, slipping back into the crowd and weaving through the curious bodies with a learned agility that only a forest-dweller could boast. Her elaborate – if somewhat revealing – fur ensemble flowed as she cut across the ballroom, correctly guessing that her quarry was near to the front where awaited the cause for alarm.

Golga brushed past many a scion as she glided to the scene of the crime. With a quick and calculated stop, she latched on to her onlooking sister, who had found place near the front of the crowd where several attendees looked on in shock and horror and despair.

“Th-that’s the king, innit...?” Gotha asked in pure surprise, joining her sister’s bewildered gaze toward the throne.

“I-I didn’t even see what...” Golga trailed off in response, characteristically horrified.

Reyner’s human grace was no match for a goblin’s prowess, and moments later he appeared behind the two sisters. They were unusually quiet, and soon Reyner discovered why as he took in the ghastly sight of a king lain slain. His own father, so it seemed.

Immediately the sounds of orders being issued caught the Lord of Wheelton’s intrigue as he took in the situation. That an assassin should murder the king – most seen man present – and not immediately be apprehended was both impressive and unbelievable.

Reyner shifted position enough to hold one of his hammers across Golga’s chest in a brutish show of reassurance to the younger goblin, who was much more susceptible to fear than her sister.

“Golga...” Reyner asked plainly. “What happened here?”

Chloelle turned her tear-filled eyes towards Flynn as he took charge of the situation, her hand clutching the hand of the fallen King. She seemed to seek comfort wherever it might come from - but receiving none, she turned back to stare down at the still form of her father. She gulped, raising a hand to wipe delicately at the tears slipping down her cheeks.

"How could this happen...?"
She mumbled, half heard by the gathered nearby. Some looks of shocked sympathy were sent her way by nobles who did not know what else to do - much like the Flower of Alyssium, who did not seem to know what to do either. Being a socialite did not prepare her for this moment. Where her skirts settled next to his body, the blood that spread from the King soaked into the fabric, permanently staining it forevermore.

With both Rie and Ria stepping up to calm the room and reinforce his call to the guards Flynn knew that further words from him, at least addressed to the majority of the room, were unneeded for the moment. He turned, eyes moving over the still figure of his father lying at the base of the stairs - he briefly flashed back to a similar scene over twenty years prior; his mother laying unmoving at the base of a set of the castle's stairs, blood pooling around her head, his small self screaming for her to open her eyes - and he shoved it all into a box, stonewalling his mind's attempt at taking him away from the now.

" Portal magic - or what looked like the portal magic myths describe, " He replied to Ria's quiet inquiry for information, his tone similarly low but far colder than the woman had likely heard from her brother before. It was a clinical voice, recounting the events without the heat of his emotions - it was an unsettling shift from the warmth he had always shown to them. " It opened as father made to descend the stairs, no larger than a dinner plate - green coloured. Father didn't even notice it until a dagger flew through and took him in the throat. It was gone no more than a couple of seconds later. "

Luckily the prince was turned away from the crowd, leaving only a couple of his family members on the other side who'd be able to see the dead look in his eyes as he spoke. He closed them for a couple of seconds and when they opened again the dead look had vanished. He half-turned his head to see Ria. " In truth I don't expect the guards to find anything. " His tone had regained some of his warmth, whatever had come over him seemingly having passed.

Flynn's gaze moved over Chloelle, lingering on the blood that soaked her dress with the passing seconds. He lowered himself to a knee beside her, a hand placed upon her back comfortingly.

" We will find answers, Chlo. The how, the why and the who, " The prince spoke quietly to his sister, her grief the most outwards of them all thus far - sparking the protective instincts that had briefly been muffled by the shock of the situation. It didn't matter that Flynn and his father had not been close in decades, nor the lingering resentment that may have lain between them even to this day - the man was still his father, still the man who had shown him such great love and pride in his earliest years. Love of family was not easily shattered.

" For now, stand and- " Flynn cut himself off as something struck him, his eyes drifting over the body of their father when a nagging that something was missing finally rose to the surface of his thoughts. The prince's eyes narrowed, quickly flickering over the king's unmoving form with a suddenly much more intense focus. Scanning, searching - his narrowed eyes widened. He couldn't see it. He hadn't seen it. He should have seen it, if not now then when he had passed.

" Where...? " A single confused word escaped him, tone low enough only for those nearest the body to catch it. Even then, it would make no sense to those who didn't know. Who couldn't see like he could.

Only he could see that his father's soul was missing.

Portal magic…?

Not only were they now dealing with the assassination of their father, they were now dealing with an assassination through impossible means? If what Flynn had said was true - and there was no reason to believe that it was not - then this was far more serious than it would be had it been a conventional assassination. The ice in his tone and the look in his eyes scared her, as well; she had never seen her brother like this, and it was an unwelcome change from what she remembered.

We need everyone that can use magic detained. I don’t care who they are, I don’t care what their specialty is.
” she said, her voice still low but her tone distracted, as if she wasn’t even talking to those around her. To her mind, there was next to nothing in the hall anymore, everything she had focused on what had just happened and what she needed to do. This wasn’t the time to lose control. There were procedures that needed to be followed if they were going to keep this from happening again.

We’re dealing with a myth now, and I-
” she started to continue, before the confused tone in her brother’s voice, another, unexpected shift from what it had just been, broke through her state of concentration. She looked up, and saw his eyes narrowed, staring down at their father’s body as though he could see something that she could not.

What is it? What’s the matter?
” she asked.
