Chapter 27

Gul’dan cheered with the rest of the army as they moved forward across the battlefield, their swords cutting down the remnants of the fleeing goblin host. The army came to a halt a hundred metres from the walls of Gornakhan and watched the last of the goblins flee into the gaping gates.

The gates closed after the last goblin had entered the fortress and the sound of the bolts being drawn echoed across the plains. The King of Varrock raised his head high and walked towards the gates of Gornakhan. As he reached the gate he raised his hand and dealt a heavy blow to the door. A few moments later he raised his hand again and when his hand hit the gate again he called out “May the lord of this fortress come forward and answer for the deaths of the innocents in this war!”

The silence on the plains served only to amplify the king’s command, and the army of the Alliance stood with baited breath, waiting for the response from the enemy. For what seemed like hours to Gul’dan the silence was unbroken by any noise. The longer they stood there the thicker the silence seemed to become, until it was weighing down on every soldier. When Gul’dan felt as if he couldn’t take it any longer a voice rang out from within Gornakhan with terrifying clarity. The voice’s tone was full of menace, but the words were unmistakable. “Never!” the voice echoed across the plains and from within the fortress.

The army of the Alliance prepared for the gates to open again and the forces of darkness to spill forth, but for moments they remained closed. The King of Varrock retreated back to the front lines of the army and called out to the men to ready themselves for battle. The army braced themselves for whatever the enemy may throw at them, but what came next was unexpected by every being on that field.

Edlenmin and Maly*tryx stood in silence just inside the massive doors that separated the interior of the fortress from the massive courtyard, surrounded to the back and sides by soldiers, and to the front by Baragûr and Hador. Another blast resounded from the courtyard and they heard pieces of turf fall onto the ground. From within the castle the sound of steel rods being braced against a cauldron could be heard before a final explosion rocked the foundations of the castle. All was silent for a moment before the sound of a cauldron being tipped on its side echoed through the courtyard. Screams of intense pain echoed throughout the castle as the scalding liquid caught the goblins off guard. Eventually the screams faded as the liquid cooled and the goblins retreated further into their tunnel to escape it.

After another few moments of silence the battle cries of the goblins could be heard echoing through the courtyard. The goblins broke the surface and great rage was evident upon their distorted visages. Expecting to be able to take the men and elves in the castle by surprise they had been caught completely off-guard by the trap laid for them. Now more wary they moved out into the courtyard slowly, surprised by the lack of enemy troops.

In front of one of the doorways into the castle the mage removed his spell of invisibility and appeared for all to see. He raised his hands and from his mouth resounded words of power and from his hands bolts of energy flew. The goblins watched in terror as the bolts tore through their first line of troops with terrifying force.

Before the goblins could regroup and mount a counter-attack on the mage he vanished once again, and the goblins stood in shock for a short period of time. A few moments of tense silence followed before one of the goblins looked up and saw the archers positioned on the roof. The captain of the archers smiled and said one word: “Fire.”
