Meanwhile, not far below the water, Jasper was sinking fast. Waving his arms pathetically, he turned to the green, glowing surface, watching the dark silhouette of the ship fade away and the darkness around him grow. Looking around frantically, he noticed that the slimy, weed-covered anchor chain stretched down only metres away.
His head still dry inside the fishbowl-helmet, Jasper hadn’t stopped shouting the whole time, “Come ‘ere you son of a chain, just a little more!” But it was no use, Jasper was floating further away by the second. Soon, the last ray of light washed out in the water and all was black.
~~~
CRACK – an old, rotting plank of wood smashed across the captain’s head.
“Don’t you eva, eva! Hit me again.” The skinny frame of Luke stood tall above the captain. “Do it again, and I won’t be so nice!”
The captain rose from his knees, twisting his neck back and forth. “You insolent brat!” He boomed, and then almost laughed as Luke lifted his scrawny arms, “you thought you could best me?”
They circled each other, waiting to see who would move first. It was the captain.
As they rolled on the deck, knocking over buckets and crashing into the rusting cannons, both were too focused on the brawl to notice the shadow of a ship slicing through the mist...
~~~
“I’m going to die, I’m going to die.” Jasper murmured to himself, over and over, as he continued to fall through the dark. “Oh God, oh God. I don’t even know which way is up...”
Lights, small lights, cut holes in the dark. And, from Jasper’s perspective, they were growing.
“Oh God, thank you God!” The ghostly yellow glow lit his face, revealing a huge grin. He let himself float towards their source.
Jasper’s grin faded in an instant, to be replaced by a look of both confusion and fear. The lights now revealed a paved track, made from hundreds upon thousands of small red bricks; it was easily two meters wide.
“Just follow the red brick road,” Jasper intoned. “Just follow the red brick road...”
