Tanik Forest
The Grays expected a mass forest fire to unfold, smelling enough smoke to believe and expect so! The flames reached the canopy of clusters of some kinds of trees less tolerant to extreme heat, definitely catching alight the conifers.
The sequoia trees did catch fire a bit here and there, but the flames could not grow for long, and eventually died-out, leaving behind ember-tipped smoking needles, and not much else. Like the Douglas fir, which needs fire for its cones to drop and explode, spreading the seeds, the immense redwoods had excellent resistance to open flames. Nevertheless, the fires along the shrubbery and ground did spread, but the rain from a few days ago kept things moist enough to prevent a serious brush fire. As such, much smoke arose, signalling a dying fire.
Some of the Goeracks seemed to think that humans made the fire, already fearing invasion by them, and many had rushed towards the source of the smoke, following their noses. The Grays were long-gone before the Goeracks really knew what was going on, but the Grays would also end up disappointed when they found out their evil plot did not go as planned!
The Grays had escaped the Tanik Forest, and then continued sprinting beyond the edge of the woods. Although usually aggressive, even the most courageous warrior fears a fiery death or suffocation. They planned to circle around the treeline and head northwards toward the mountainous regions of their rugged homeland. They would return to their warlord soon, to deliver the news.
Although a few tribes of Grays already partaken in raids in the past, but without success, it seems that another tribe would be ready for further attacks soon. The Grays knew that the Goerack alphas, even the few younger ones they managed to kill, were much stronger than they ever could be. They would need to form a plan of some kind.
