Name: Kingdom of Rournic*
Leader(s): King Thom Rour
Population: 400,000
Races: ~100% Human
Location: The Kingdom spans the area which is modern day Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and parts of South and west Kazakhstan.

Capital: Morriford
Capital Description: Morriford is located only a couple of day’s walk from the shoreline of the sea to the kingdom’s west. It is built in a relatively flat, grassy area and at its centre is a grand villa made from top quality stone and built to look beautiful. It is a fascinating building with pillars, balconies, elaborate carvings and indoors the furniture is of the highest quality timber and there are rugs, curtains and decorations such as paintings created by the finest craftsmen.
Surrounding this villa the rest of the city sprawls into the grassy plains and is surrounded by a relatively circular stone wall which reaches 25ft high and has towers spread at equal intervals. The city is built very efficiently and masterfully with roads that are carefully planned to avoid any one area becoming too busy and community buildings placed strategically to ensure civilians can get there without struggle. Houses don’t look anything special for the most part, simply built out of bricks in square or rectangular shapes although rich families often have their property built in a more attractive fashion, with pillars and carvings and balconies to make their homes or businesses more aesthetically pleasing; community buildings are also built in this way. The population is around 50,000.

Government: The monarchy possesses all the power in Rournic*, although often advisors are placed in cities to keep charge if the monarch is busy with other matters.

Economy: The official currency is simply gold coins, every one worth the same. However, for less valuable items there is often trading since a gold coin people don’* want to give away their gold coins for things they could instead trade for a bag of apples.

Although a lot of food is produced in the plains, huge amounts of timer, stone, metal and other resources cannot be produced in enough quantity to allow the kingdom to become self-sufficient. Lots of materials are bought from elsewhere to fulfil this need.

Military: 40,000 specially trained army regulars, 15,000 hired mercenaries. Although this is quite large at almost 20% of the population, many of the mercenaries are of course only in it for their own benefit and might not fight as valiantly as expected, as well as the fact they are not professionally trained like the regulars.

Religion: The kingdom is a collection of old, conquered settlements which all had different religions. Therefore there is no single main religion, although a lot of civilians often look towards idols alongside gods, often these idols are heavily linked to the monarchy as the rulers of this kingdom enjoy boasting about their achievements.

Culture: In the capital and other wealthy settlements, there are schools where most children are taught how to read, write and do simple mathematics as well as guilds where people can learn finer arts such as painting. Due to this, the wealthy cities are vibrant and have a great and interesting culture, whereas the poorer settlements are often bland and boring.

History: A few hundred years ago, a stuck up and greedy man named John Rour lost his wealthy father and inherited his entire wealth and his successful business in the trade of metals. John had grown up in school and was therefore very clever, however the idea of maths, numbers and a steady income bored him and stories of war intrigued him. Due to his intrigue, arrogance and greed for power John almost immediately sold his father’s business and hired as many mercenary soldiers as he possibly could.

According to rumour, he said to his equally intelligent friends “I am leaving in search of a more exhilarating life, when I return in a few years time with all the spoils of my adventure I expect to see a beautiful mansion at the centre of a beautiful town. I leave you most of my wealth to accomplish this,” or something along those lines. Although that quote is just a rumour, once John left in search of battle, his friends began work on a villa and settlement; Morriford, named after a Mr Morris who was very close to John and took charge of the construction.

John took his army which was thousands strong and marched straight east, taking over whatever land he could and hiring more mercenaries along the way to make up for his losses. Any settlement he took, he claimed as his own. John marched only for a few years however as his army tired and his numbers gradually lowered, so he returned home to his villa and bustling little village. He thanked his friends who had built the village and villa for their service while he was away and as a gift he placed them each in charge of one of the settlements he took over whilst at war. He also named his new kingdom – “Rournic*” – after himself.

From here the kingdom only strengthened due to the fact all John and all his friends were well educated and therefore ruled their settlements efficiently. For many generations, the Rour family were content with the achievements of John Rour until one King Thom came along. One of the most arrogant people to rule the kingdom, he seems to believe he can one day own a kingdom to rival that of the Sorus Empire and so has doubled the land his kingdom owns since coming to power, copying John Rour in his method of using large amounts of mercenaries to greatly boost army numbers. It is a worrying time for many in the kingdom as they believe one way or another they will be going to war, despite the fact many in the cities are content as they are.

Other: The stone used to construct buildings throughout the empire is almost always brightly coloured and makes the cities seem light and welcoming.

The * at the end of Rournich is supposed to be a "H".

The Meeting

Steffon calmly downed more wine as King Horic accepted gifts from the other emissaries. He probably should have brought some, but it wasn't a Balan custom to do so. Horic didn't seem offended either way.

"You speak of war, King Horic?" Steffon gave a booming laugh of enthusiasm. "I only wish I was ten years younger so I could crack some skulls myself." Quickly he took a more serious tone. "There are many in the Republic who want war, King Horic. Some will say Sorus is no threat to us in the West, but they are imbeciles. The High Council knows what the Emperor wants."

Of course, the Council in Asindia was rarely ever in full agreement. Many feared the Sorusians would be cruel rulers and force their foreign religion and the institution of slavery upon the Republic as they had in the East. Others welcomed the idea of Karrus united under human rule, as many were mistrustful of the other races. Still others wanted to take no part, favoring a more isolationist standpoint.

"Were it up to me, I would gladly pledge our strength for your cause, King Horic. But sadly, it is not my decision." Steffon knew he could not promise the Republic's forces without the High Council's consent. "I will bring your case before Grand Councilor Arishem, and hopefully he will make proper judgment. Before it is too late." There was no need to immediately declare war, as it would take time to gather forces from the other side of the continent.

Asindia

The guards at the gate leveled their spears as they saw armored riders approaching, but upon hearing the diplomat explain their intentions, the guard captain ordered his men at ease. They had been expecting an emissary.

"Very well. We shall escort you to the Palace." The guard captain replied and ordered the gates opened. It seemed that additional guards were waiting behind the gate just for that purpose.

Twenty armored spearmen were gathered to provide an escort through the streets. Even from the gates, the top of the Second Sun's huge gilded dome was proudly visible over the stone rooftops from the city, with three of the palace's five towers rising overhead.

In the Palace itself, the Council was currently in recess. Grand Councilor Arishem was notified of the arriving diplomats.

"Prepare the palace to receive them, then." Arishem told his attendants. "Assemble the Councilmen in the palace and notify the others in the city." Most of the council was away meeting with their constituents, and there was only one other High Councilor in the palace. Arishem himself, already dressed for a meeting, made his way to the entrance hall of the Palace to wait for the diplomatic party.

((A mercenary nation? I like it. Accepted.

Mark, you're accepted but please take the time to look at my suggestions on the Story and Roleplay chat thread.))

The Meeting

King Horic couldn't but give the Gray Minotaur a slightly odd look when he didn't understand what sailing was. But then again, the nation was landlocked and significantly less developed - according to the messenger, they hadn't even known Dormoor existed. So they probably didn't have much experience with large bodies of water. Anyways, the look shifted to one of appreciation when Eodis then went on to pledge his support to the alliance, even if he was disappointed when the Gray wanted to stay on the defensive. Princess Derene shared this disappointment too, though it was much more evident.

Still, going on to tell everyone his entire battle plan was unwise when some of these leaders and delegates may still have joining Sorus on their mind. But he made no mention of it, Eodis clearly still being embarrassed over not understanding sailing. "I appreciate your willingness to join the alliance and your concern for my nation."

Horic also had King Vilkar's support, which was good however limited it may be even if he too wanted to stay on the defensive. "Any assistance you can provide is already useful."

Unfortunately, he had still yet to receive confirmation that the Balan Republic would support the alliance. But the ambassador had promised to speak in his favor, and that alone he was grateful for. The fact that the Republic had a dedicated ambassador for his kingdom already gave him high hopes to begin with.

He waited for a few more moments, to let any other guests speak up. Horic was about to continue speaking, when suddenly it was Princess Derene who spoke.

"A defensive war may be safer, but it won't get us anywhere." She told the room. "It will just be a stalemate that will drag on for who knows how long. And once peace is finally declared, the four kingdoms will continue to be occupied and the Sorusians will just build their armies up again while you build yours."

"This isn't just about uniting to defend each other from a superior threat." She explained, hoping she still had everyone's attention. "This is about removing that threat altogether."

"The Sorusians are spread thin." King Horic added. "The rebellion and war have weakened them. The people have never accepted occupation. If we push hard enough, it will collapse under its own weight."

Asindia

The Sorusian diplomat entered the palace, leaving his personal guard behind at the request of the palace's own guards. He had never been to the Balan Republic before - the Sorusians have had hardly any contact with them until now. But after his failed attempt to invade Dormoor, Cidius had realized they needed allies since the dwarves would no doubt try to gather their own. Hopefully they wouldn't come across as weak.

He looked at the floor, the walls, the ceiling, and decided that while decadent, it wasn't as nice as the palace at Daralt. Then, he looked at the High Councilor who had come to greet him. The diplomat said nothing, instead waiting for the High Councilor to speak first, as was the Sorusian tradition.

The Tanik Forest

Already, Captain Darius was frustrated. His men were swinging at vines and bushes, attempting to clear a path. The horses at the back constantly whined, and even more terrain had to be cleared for them to pass. Eventually Darius just grew fed up and ordered them back to the camp, with the other soldiers who had been left behind to guard it.

"Maybe this is one of those seemingly insignificant decisions that turns out to be a lifesaver later on?" His lieutenant suggested, trying to lighten the mood.

Darius wasn't having it. But fortunately, one of the scouts had discovered the path. Though rough, it was better than trudging through thorns and hacking at leaves. Still impassable via horse, though.

And then a thought occurred to him. There was a path. Which meant one of two things. First, the occupied kingdom behind them knew of a way through this area. In that case, there was probably a map archived somewhere and this arduous task was absolutely pointless. It made sense too, since this path seemed as though it had been neglected for quite some time. Second, there was indeed an indigenous tribe living here, civilized enough to build such a path, which only made this even more complicated, since the rumors weren't exactly clear on whether the tribe was hostile or friendly.

Still, there could be no doubt that the path was more efficient, and he had his men continue down that route. But they had to advance in rows of three.

And then he spotted the small creatures, tossing a shiny object around. Well, time to find out the truth. "Hey!" He called out to them, waving a hand.

And then came the sound of conflict, like there was a battle going on nearby. But the screams of pain were more animalistic than human, half-giant, or dwarf. He immediately called four of his scouts and sent them running to investigate. Despite their unfamiliarity with the terrain, they were still able to nimbly dodge under the branches and over bushes.

When they arrived at the source of the noise, they were astonished at what they saw. Ape-like creatures battling it out with some fuzzy looking humans. But they quickly recovered and ran back to inform their captain.

Stonelord Morano had been sitting quietly up to now, sipping on his Heather Tincture, brought with him on his journey to remind him of home. He almost started to drift away contemplating the spirit's flavour, both smokey and floral at the same time, and loose himself in the pale purple colour he was swirling around his glass.

When the Princess spoke, it quickly snapped Morano back from the brink. "If it is to come to war against the Sorusian Empire then I'd advise that first we get some information from the inside; either by traditional scouting or subterfuge it doesn't matter. It's all well us speculating how the rebellion and war effected them, we need hard evidence, troop numbers and the like before taking action." Suddenly interjected Morano, briskly putting his cup down as he spoke.

Morano then sat back in his chair for a moment and gathered himself "But nevertheless, my people will certainly contribute to whatever you're" he paused "Planning."
