It had been three weeks since the Sea Banshee had floated into port, and not a night had gone by since then that the taverns of the city weren't filled to the brim with folks of all stripes exchanging tall tales of the vessel and its enigmatic captain.

"A fell wind brought her here," suggested a cobbler, whose waterfront enterprise gave him some legitimacy in the matter of discussing the sudden appearance of the disreputable ship. "On deck there were no crew, nor was the wheel being handled. As though fate itself drew her near."

"Fate, or fiend," suggested a dockworker, whose religiosity was sketchy at best but whose conspiratorial mind was beyond equal. " Sea Banshee ? Sea Corpse, I say. Its sails torn, its hull breached in a dozen places or more. That black-hearted brigand's sold his soul to the devil, to keep his ship afloat."

"Wasn't sea worthy," agreed a sailor. "I've never seen a ship so pock-marked as that survive on the open water. And those breaches weren't the work of cannonballs, judging by the shape. What did make them though..." The sailor shook his head, to dispel the possibility of following that thought to its conclusion.

"Doesnae matter," came the voice of a gruff dwarven fisherman; he had become a local celebrity, as it was his fishing skiff that bumped against the hull of the Sea Banshee as it came into harbour. "He's as good as dead, that Captain Otodus. Carried him ashore myself. Half mad and half dead, he was. Breath smelt of seawater. The grave is the only port he'll visit now."

"Oh aye?" Asked the dockworker, eyes squinting in trademark suspicion. "And who says death will be enough to do him in, hmm? We've all heard the stories; raiding villages, battling navies, facing sea monsters. By my account he's dead ten times over."

"You're paranoid," said the sailor. "And Captain Otodus was hardly alone in those stories; him living isn't that remarkable. Half his years he spends as a pirate, aye, but the other half is as privateer, hired by king and country and sailing alongside naval vessels true and proper. I suspect his heroism is greatly overestimated."

"Kings and countries," corrected the dockworker. "He's worked against us as much as for us. And he might not've been alone then, but he is alone now, hmmm?" He looked pointedly at the fisherman dwarf, who sighed and nodded his head in begrudging agreement.
"There was no crewman on the ship, 'cept he," the dwarf admitted.

"A ghost ship," the dockworker agreed, "And he its ghostly shepherd. He's spent a fortnight in the hospital, but the carpenters have been working night and day to repair his ship. That does not seem like the last wish of a dead man to me. Mark my words - Captain Otodus is nothing but trouble!"

Conversations such as these were taking place in every bar and tavern in not just the city, not nearby towns and villages too. The Sea Banshee was a ship feared in all ports, as no one knew when it arrived whether it came as friend or foe. As an independent vessel it sold itself to the highest bidder, changing hands many times in many wars over many years. And sometimes - most times, some might argue - the Sea Banshee would hold to no master other than its captain, and go raiding up and down the shoreline with impunity.

The reputation of Captain Otodus was a man who was half hero, and two halves devil. For thirty years he was the scourge of the oceans, and for the last ten he was indisputably the most feared of all pirate captains. How he had orchestrated so many betrayals and survived, how he had fought in so many battles and won, how he gained such great riches and lost them all in grand displays of charity, no one could be certain. Most assumed that black magic was responsible.

Such was his reputation that when the wayward ship was reported to the city magistrates, they assumed that its docile entrance must have meant that Otodus was working for the crown once again. After all, as a foe he would not have dared sail in to harbour. Just to be certain, an urgent message had been sent to the king's court for confirmation. The captain would not stick around long enough for a response to be received.

For three days he had been languishing in a hospital bed, drifting on the cusp of life and death. But as soon as he was conscious, and coherent, he sprang into action. Already the Sea Banshee was seaworthy once again, where some scant weeks ago it seemed to have been assaulted by a hurricane. And though the story was known widely that Captain Otodus had been the sole person to return from his voyage, and those sinister implications certainly struck at the heart of all who heard them; this did mean the captain was in need of a crew.

And those who are bold of spirit and daring at heart would know that adventures and riches awaited them, were they to align themselves with the pirate captain.

Blurb

Welcome to Sail of the Sea Banshee . This thread will follow the latest voyage of the crew of Captain Otodus, legendary pirate and privateer, through uncharted lands. There will be discovery, there will be menace, there will be the touch of the supernatural and of the accursed. And maybe, just maybe, there will be a dash of fun.

We all know how roleplays work so I wont keep you any longer than I have to. Rules are as you would expect. Feel free to take whatever liberties you like with your character creation. This is a fantasy thread, (though I will allow some steampunk elements and other slightly off-genre characters,) so don't be afraid to be something a tad unusual if that's your fancy as well.

Good luck; have fun.

Captain Otodus

The good captain is into his sixties, and his once pitch-black, wiry hair is now peppered with grey. His long hair he wears back in a tight bun, atop which sits a wide-brimmed hat. His left eye is a shrewd black, his right eye is a dead white. His nose is gnarled as a treeknot, indicative of his life of conflict. His lips are a ruined mess; sliced, chunks missing, teeth appearing at odd angles, though this ruin is masked by the thick moustache and beard which stretches down to his sternum.

Otodus wears a seaweed coloured chain-link shirt which stretches near his knees, though obscured from the waist down by the tartan kilt he wears over it. A long coat, blood red, stretches to his heels. Otodus is a dominating figure, six foot five, though he is somewhat hunch-backed as well - with a perfect back, he might've stood closer to six-eight.

Name: Groshub.
Age: ???
Gender: Male.
Race: Western Goblin.

Appearance: Groshub stands at five feet in height - which he claims is quite tall by “western goblin” standards. His leathery warted skin is a dark greyish green, and like most “western goblins” he has a pointed nose, chin, and ears, as well as a pair of large yellow eyes. He also emits an unpleasant odour that constantly seems to change - one minute it seems to resemble rotten fish, the next it becomes akin to old socks.

Attire: Groshub’s attire is rather rough. A tattered shirt under worn and beaten leather armour, patched and sewn after years of abuse. Over this he wears a brown cloak that was once grey, with a hood and mask that can conceal his face if needed. Some rough footwraps are all he has in the way of footwear.

Weaponry: An elven arming sword, in beautiful condition; a stark contrast to the rest of his attire. Aside from that, he also has a rather brutal looking curved dagger, made from an unknown venomous metal that Groshub himself seems to be immune to.

Short History: What exactly is a western goblin, and how are they different from regular goblins? Who knows. Groshub certainly isn’t like ordinary goblins, and appears to be the only one of his kind. He claims to be from a land from “the west”, but refuses to elaborate any further. He refuses to share any further details about his background or even his age.

He arrived in the region this roleplay takes place in about twenty or so years ago. Naturally treated as an outcast due to his unpleasant appearance and dubious origins, he was able to find work as a mercenary for equally dubious employers. Despite this, he gained a reputation for dogged loyalty - or at least, as loyal as one could be in his line of work. He generally refused to betray employers unless he saw a sign that they intended to betray him first.
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.
