Mercy listened as everyone spoke their piece. Not even a full day had passed and the Sea Banshee had already found itself in a bind. The young woman frowned slightly. She had known that joining the crew meant putting herself in danger, but she hadn’t thought it would strike so soon .

Still, the captain had offered a democratic vote to deal with the looming fight(s). Her more experienced peers offered different ideas for a plan of attack. One, in particular, stuck out to her as immensely unlikely.

“I don’t know about sending a decoy vessel. If the rest of the ship is as poorly stocked as the surgery theater, we’d have a sad attempt at replicating the size of this ship and use all of our supplies in the process. There’d be little chance that the experienced admiral’s fleet would believe such a flimsy target, and even less that we’d hold without the remaining powder.”

Though she was no sea fellow, Mercy felt that this was as accurate a read on the situation as she could have. “Otherwise, I’m in favor of what the majority votes. I have none of the experience that many of you do, and I feel my view of the situation is lacking.”

Bosun Groshub

The western goblin twitched slightly, but remained silent as everyone said their piece. Only his ever-present odour, which now smelled like spoiled milk, served as a constant reminder of his presence.

Neither approach was ideal. Under normal conditions, one ship against three was suicidal. Even if they timed their approach right and had both luck and the wind on their side, the chances of success were slim. At the same time, however, this was no ordinary crew, but whether or not that would work out in their favour remained to be seen.

Then there were the Moonsails. Groshub wasn't convinced that they were truly that much more dangerous, but alas, nobody spoke in favour of that option. The western goblin's vote would make no difference, and he would not be able to convince others of that course either. Supporting that approach was tantamount to doing nothing.

Lastly, they could go east, but there they ran the risk of facing one of the most deadly enemies of all: attrition. Yet it seemed a safer risk than the alternative.

"We go east!" the western goblin declared. "One ship evade shoals easily. Many ships can't. They follow, they get stuck. Rest fight the sharp ears. Yes yes!"
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

Name: Lieutenant James Wells
Age: 27
Race: Human
Gender: Male

Appearance: Wells is a honed sailor, trim and fit, and while not imposing, tall enough at 5’ 11”. His medium length brown hair is tied in a ponytail by a red ribbon, and he trims his moustache and chin beard sharp and triangular like a Spanish Conquistador. His eyes are a murky green, and his face weather worn.
Clothing: The most distinctive element in his attire is his navy-blue coat, gold buttoned and white cuffed, with a gold epaulet on the left shoulder. Beneath the coat, Wells wears a plain white collared button-down shirt, dark blue trousers, and tall black boots. He keeps his reading glasses in a slim case hidden in an inside coat pocket when not in use.

Weapons: Wells keeps his fine sabre, polished and wicked sharp, on his left hip. Across his chest, he keeps four single shot pistols, and two more on each side, so that he can fire multiple shots without having to reload. And besides that, he keeps a dagger hidden in his boot. In case.
He is a capable swordsman, but not exceptionally so, and his precise aim with a pistol is impaired by the inaccuracy of the weapon.
Magic: Wells is uncommonly impotent in the magical arts and sciences. To make matters worse, he is often more susceptible to their uses upon him. He cannot sense spirits, though they can affect him.
Notable Other Skills: Fluency in the Western Language of Vistric, Games of Chance

History: Like most naval officers, Wells was born to parents of minor nobility – enough to gain an entrance to the upper echelons of society, but not enough to do so without his own skill, dedication, and sacrifice. His younger sister and brother married well, his older brother joined the clergy, and he joined the navy as a ship’s boy at age 13. By age 14, he was the direct assistant to the captain, and after that was many years working up the ranks until just last year when he was promoted to Lieutenant.
Relationship with Parents: Wells could never live up to his father’s expectations, and his mother preferred his older brother. Both are deceased.

Personality: Punctilious almost to the point of being mechanical, but yet fluid and sharp with a dancer’s grace.
Faction: Royal Navy
Religion: The Church

Other: I have not yet figured out how he’s going to join this thread XD if you fight any of the Royal Navy, you can capture him or otherwise make him surrender, or if you go east, you can find his ship run aground or something

Havoc clears her throat. "Well, then, seems the vote's settled: Three for turnin' and ambushin' the enemy, four for the Shoals, and two abstentioned." She smiles apologetically at Hraldmir and Sin, and sort of nods her head towards Aia, not making eye contact with the latter. "Sorry, mateys. A river rat never stands and fights when she's outnumbered."

Ulysses let out another silent sigh of relief as Havoc spoke. Although he was nearly certain that the cook - and the specter, too, for that matter - was suspicious of him, their domineering of the conversation seemed to have all but guaranteed that they wouldn't be facing the royal armada, at least not today.

The old seadog nodded mournfully as though presiding over a funeral, allowing each crew member to have their turn at speaking. The captain did not interrupt nor seek to add his own thoughts until the crewmates gathered had all aired their thoughts. Though the pirate was the most experienced seafarer and naval combatant onboard, it seemed clear that he held value in the points of view of everyone, regardless of their background or understanding of the subject knowledge.

That, or Captain Otodus was particularly good at pantomime.

"Harken here," he said in his throaty voice. "The twin-spirit has the right of it. The majority's for the Shoals. That's no clear path and make no mistake; the twisting sands of time work tenfold in that graveyard of ships. What was there is no longer, but shifted. No two journeys are ever the same, the sea floor moves to make mockery of memory."

The captain threw a glance over his shoulder, back in the direction they had sailed from. Somewhere out there, beyond the blackening sky, carried forth by night winds and unshaking duty, the town's armada was in pursuit. Unseeable, but approaching with every passing moment.

"Still," he said, casting a ghastly smile that made attempts to be reassuring, "Fate's favour still casts its warm glow upon us. We've two smaller vessels," the captain gestured to what must've passed for lifeboats on the Sea Banshee , held aloft six feet on either side of the deck by a series of wood-beams and ropes. Their fronts were long and thin, seemingly better suited for river trekking than surviving the open sea.

"Come the dawn, six of you shall disembark. Groshub will take one raft, Havoc the other. Pick two men to accompany you, each. Low to the tide's surface, you shall guide us through the perils below. Should we survive the perils of the night," the captain gave another glance around the horizon, just as the setting sun sunk behind it, and the world fell into twilight.

It was a moonless night. Not one for visibility. Whether that was a bane or a boon was hard to tell. Every crashing wave seemed to signal the arrival of their enemies, who could approach them from any direction, appearing out of the shadows of night like a ghost. However, the enemy would equally not be able to see them. Or so the crew would hope. On nights guided only by starlight, hope was the greatest ally a mariner could have.

Yet dawn came, and no new dangers were revealed by its light. To the port side, the tops of the waves were breached as a school of dolphins, some forty strong, followed their journey for a half hour. They were spinner dolphins, and lived up to their name; rocketing out of the waves and spinning in the air before crashing back into the black depths below.

Captain Otodus had steered the ship all night, but weariness had not removed any of his wariness. He took no food nor drink, and gave no commands; having given responsibilities over to his crew he seemed confident that the Sea Banshee would now competently run itself. Dawn gave way to morning, which led into a lazy afternoon. The sky was more clouded than the day before, and brief respites from the blistering sun were gained whenever an airy cumulus billowed in front of that oppressive, yellow orb.

It was late afternoon when they reached Shipwrecker Shoals as the captain had called it. Though it was more reef than shoal; the island that once sat between the shoals had been hit once by a great tsunami and never again showed its face above the water's surface. The seabed rose up high here, and beneath the surface of the waves the many colours of ocean plantlife could be observed.

"Hanzi, take the helm," Captain Otodus commanded, relieving himself of the duty of steering the ship. "Need someone at the front of the ship, to call directions," the captain said. "Groshub, Havoc, grab your teams and a boat and get down there. Guide us through this maritime maze. The rest of you, keep your eyes peeled. Aia, the deck is yours."

With that, the captain headed off to his quarters, closing the door behind him. Presumably, to catch up on the night's rest he had lost.
