Somehow, the program had manipulated the game code to the point where everywhere in RuneScape was a PvP setting. That’s right, everywhere, except for banks and Lumbridge Castle, was PvP. Jagex, who was under intense criticism from their players at this point, was forced to explain about the Zaros Program, and how none of this was really their fault. In my opinion, I believe the program understood that we had taken control of Varrock, and had enough intelligence to understand that placing all of RuneScape under a veil of PvP would cause a lot of conflict in organized bands. I mean really, one misclick from a Level 138 on a skiller with a 1900 Total Level sets off a pretty big incident, wouldn’t you say? We did a pretty good job of handling situations like these, however; purposeful attacks were usually given a death-sentence, and consequences for a misclick varied depending on the severity of the attack. The Army of Gielinor did not handle this controversy as well though; Jagex’s army was already forming different factions from within, which was all Jagex’* fault in the first place. Instead of running their army like a city, they ran it like a toy… They barely were able to take Draynor (which had very minimal resistance placed in it) and were having trouble keeping the peace daily.
But, good things came from that change in the coding too; before, anyone could walk into our Varrock – the city we worked and died to take control of. Now, if you weren’t wearing a special cloak I personally coded and handed to members, you were not allowed within the borders of our outposts (meaning you couldn’t even get close enough to Varrock to see the city’s walls).

Well, now that I’ve cleared that up, I supposed you want to hear about my meeting with Andrew and Paul, don’t you journal? They PM’d me in-game and requested a meeting with me as soon as possible; of course, not trusting anything Jagex ever does, I told them I would only accept if they agreed to meet me in Varrock Castle, just us three (I’ll have guards outside the door, don’t you worry…). They agreed to that condition, and told me it was urgent, and was about economics rather than military. I don’t really know what that’s supposed to mean seeing as Jagex only has an army, and no resources what-so-ever under their control….

“Well this is… slightly creepy…” Andrew said to his brother, Paul.
“I agree; these kids really look like they mean business!”
Andrew and Paul’s RuneScape avatars were entering Varrock, escorted by an armed guard.
“Can you guys like leave us be?” Paul typed to the players surrounding him.
“That’s not an option.” Was the only response the Gower brothers received.
“And how do you know we won’t just kill you now?* Paul said to the group.
“That would be silly, sir.” One of the guards replied.
“Alright, these guys are pretty well trained…” Paul said to his brother aloud.
Mark H and Timbo entered the Gowers’ office and sat down in front of the computer, next to the brothers.
“How’s it coming so far?” Timbo asked.
“So far so good. We’re being escorted to meet with Volaticus.” Andrew said.
Mark H asked, “You’re being escorted? What is that supposed to mean?”
“You wouldn’t believe it… when we arrived at the southern end of Varrock the entire location was searched for other JMods and players, and then this group of high level players surrounded us and told us to keep moving straight north!” Andrew explained.
“This doesn’t look like Varrock…” Timbo announced.
“Obviously this faction understands how to use the game code to their advantage; they’ve fortified every building and set up guard towers around the city.” Paul told him.
Andrew and Paul’s characters entered the castle and moved into the King’s room; their escorts stayed outside the door (unknown to the JMods, the escorts were already setting their special attacks to ‘on’ incase of an emergency).
“Hello, Volaticus, nice to meet you!” Paul said in cyan coloring.
“Cut the crap.” Was the response he received.
“Nice group of players you got here :) ” Andrew typed.
“We do have a name, you know.”
“Yes of course, this is all a big clan isn’t it? :p” Paul replied.
“No.* Mike responded.

Timbo said to the group: “They certainly take themselves seriously…”
Mike said, “You do realize that RuneScape is now a warzone, with a limited amount of troops. If you lose, RuneScape goes down.”
“Yes, we are aware of the situation…” Paul started.
“No, my council does not think you are.” Mike interrupted.
“Volaticus excuse me, but we are Jagex! Who could know the situation better than us?” Andrew retorted.
*I don’t think you understand… You cannot just expect to run around the landscape owning up monsters whenever you see them; you have to treat this very seriously! We were informed of your takeover of Draynor, and frankly, were not impressed…”
“Well never mind, that is not what we came here to discuss. We have seen on your forum thread that you have begun to create a sufficient food supply to meet the demands of your population. And by the way, about how many members does this clan have?” Paul spoke.
“First of all, this is not a clan. It is not an army. It is a coalition; we are not here to invade RuneScape and oust the Zaros Program… we are here to rebuild and put RuneScape back to what it was before this whole situation began. Second of all, yes, we have found means to create a large supply of pies, enough to feed our soldiers and keep them alive both during and after raids. Third, are numbers are again approaching one hundred and fifty.”
“Only one hundred and fifty?” Andrew said while he began to smile in reality.
“Yes. Do not confuse that with your own numbers, however. We have battle and siege experience, training sessions, and absolute loyalty. I do not believe you can say the same.”
“Touché!” Paul laughed.

“So I figure you want to trade for some of our pies?” Mike asked.
“No, we want you to trade for our grain!” Paul said.
“As far as RuneScape’s Coalition is concerned, neither your borders nor ours reach that far, meaning that the grain is fair competition.”
Mark H told the group in the office: “Be careful, you two. Volaticus was right when he said his troops were more disciplined and experienced… If you set off a political incident concerning this supply of grain, we may have to fight over it.”
“So what if we do have to fight over it? We must have near ten times as many members as they do!” Paul replied.
“We will consider trading for the grain, but only if you adhere to two conditions. One, we do not trade coins; and two, you do not step foot in Asgarnia.”
“Asgarnia? Why should we allow you to have control over an entire region?” Paul asked.
“Because we are doing you a favor. We have more right to that grain than you do, and we do not need you interfering with our plans for Falador!”
“Fine, fine, we agree.” Paul said.
“Paul! What are you doing?!” Andrew yelled at him out loud.
“We need food desperately… We have no means of food other than Trout and Salmon, and cannot supply feathers fast enough. Plus, this way we can focus our resources on Port Sarim.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Timbo interjected.
“I agree with Timbo. You shouldn’t let them just have an entire region to do whatever they like with.” Mark H explained.
*It doesn’t matter; we can always go back on the deal when we feel we are ready.” Paul announced.
“We accept the deal, and will trade each piece of grain for a rune of our choice, in sets of hundreds.” Paul told Mike.
“Elaborate, please.” Mike replied

“Okay, we’ll trade grain in sets of one hundred notes. For that set, you will trade us a predetermined set of one hundred runes. That number can be bartered, though; so if you feel that one hundred chaos runes is too much for one hundred grain, perhaps you could get us down to about sixty! Likewise, instead of trading one hundred air runes, which are cheap and needed in large supplies, for one hundred grain, perhaps you will instead trade us one hundred and twenty.” Paul laid it out.
“I’ll get back to you on that one.” Mike determined.
“What? Why can’t you just make the decision now?* Andrew asked.
“I am not the sole leader or king of this coalition. We have both a High and Low Council; since this is a large and important issue, it will be debated and voted on by the High Council. Then, and only then, will I get back to you via PM.” Mike explained.
“Alright, alright, take your time. We’ll be going now.* Paul said, leaving the room.
“They have a council?” Mark H said to Paul.
“I guess… seems like they’ve put a lot of thought into this!” Paul replied.
“We better not let the Army of Gielinor hear about that.” Timbo said wearily.
“Why not?* Andrew asked him.
“We govern our army like a tyrant; there is not debating or questioning an order… over there they have councils that work out solutions, which would seem fairer to the common person.” Timbo said as he got up from his chair.
“Just to the common person?” Mark H asked.
“Yes. With councils I imagine it would be hard to get a tough decision across; plus, big decisions may take a long time to get a ruling on, even though it may be needed immediately.” Timbo added as he left the room.
“I say once we build up enough supply of food and runes, we try and invade Falador.” Paul said to Andrew.
“And what will you do when those players in Varrock get wind of breaking the contract?” Mark H said, sighing deeply.

“Easy. If we succeed, we invade them too. If we fail, we say a rogue general ordered the attack, and beg them not to hurt us. Either way we’ll be fine.” Paul laughed.
(Excerpt from Courtney’s Microsoft Word Document entitled “High Council Meetings”)

Issue I
A. Should RuneScape’s Coalition (henceforth abbreviated RC) open trading rights with the Army of Gielinor and start trading for the grain supply north of Lumbridge in return for control of Asgarnia?
Comments (Comments will always be abbreviated for ease):
Mike – The Army of Gielinor should not be trusted, but for now we should stay on their good side.
YouKnowIt – We need to keep them out of Asgarnia.
Joker – Since we have the Rune shop at our disposal, those runes won’t be hard to get, either.
Courtney – The runes will cost us coins, though. Where do we get these coins?
Mike – Simple. We sell all the Iron Ore, armor, etc… that we’re producing to the General Store.
Vote:
Mike – Ye
Joker – Ye
YouKnowIt – Ye
Courtney – Ye
Issue Passed, 4-0

Issue II
A. Joker asks permission of the Council to set up an elite task force to guard merchants on trade routes. The task force would consist of 3-6 individuals, including at least one person representing a pure form of each of the three points of the combat triangle.
Comments:
Joker – We all agreed the Army of Gielinor cannot be trusted, so this makes perfect sense…
Mike – I’ll have to agree with Joker on this one.
YouKnowIt – If we allow one incident of the AoG harming a merchant, couldn’t we use it to declare war?
Mike – Hypothetically, yes.
Joker – We don’t have the experience or firepower to win said war, yet.
YouKnowIt – Wouldn’t it be dangerous to arm a trade route with our finest soldiers?
Joker – They would all be armed with teleports, of course.
Mike – We need to make sure we get that grain. Without a stable food supply we’ll never hold Varrock.
Vote:
Mike – Ye
Joker – Ye
YouKnowIt – Ye
Courtney – Ye
Issue Passed, 4-0

The quartet carefully made their way down the paved road to the designated area; each of the four wore the standard cloaks of Runescape’s Coalition. The lowest level in the group, a skiller, carried a stash of several hundred runes in his inventory, all of which were going to be used in the first official trade with the Army of Gielinor. The second lowest level, a female avatar in mystic apparel, took extra care to keep her mouse directly over the skiller, in case of an ambush. Behind those two walked the highest levels of the group, a veteran player and squad leader in Torag armor, and a ranger in black dragon hide.
Approaching from the opposite direction was a group of three, all of whom jabbered away in standard text.
“Are these the guys?” The skiller said into his microphone, which was connected to a Skype voice-call including only the squadron and online members of the High Council.
“They look like random players…” The mage added.
As the two groups met at the crossroads where Lumbridge’s territory turns into Varrock’s, they both stopped, and did not speak.
“These guys have no other reason to stop – the location was top secret. This must be them.” The squad leader announced.
“When it doubt, get the hell out.” Joker, who was online, said.
Finally, one of the group of three said wrote, “Here for the trade?”
“Yes.” The squad leader replied.
The mage hovered her mouse over the “Teleport-Other Option” for the skiller, nervously hoping everything would go smoothly.
The skiller and the player briefly went into a trade menu, but was ended when the skiller typed, “That’s only one third of the goods…”
The player explained, “That’s why there’s three of us,” adding an explicit at the end.

In the skiller’s chatbox appeared the option to trade with the player again. As he moved his mouse over the click on it, a red blotch exploded onto his computer screen.
“AMBUSH!* The squad leader yelled into his mic, which nearly fell off his head.
The mage instantly teleported the skiller to the safety of Varrock, and scanned her screen for where the damage had come from. The players from The Army of Gielinor, however, were not so lucky. As the squadron immediately rushed to get into its pre-practiced defensive position, the group of three was annihilated by a rain of arrows.
“Pro Range, now!* The squad leader announced.
“Guys get the hell out of there!” Joker shouted, as he watched the squad leader’s screen from a Skype Video Chat.
“No, hold position. We gotta find out who these (explicit)’s are!” The leader said to the other two.
As the group held their position, a swarm of turbaned NPCs ran up the road from the south.
“Goddam Al Kharid soldiers…” The ranger blurted out.
“Remember, there are only a limited number of them in the game; these nasties are all under level 50… I’ll tank them out for as long as possible, you two inflict as much damage as humanly possible.” The squad leader rang out.
The ambushers piled onto the leader, but thanks to his high melee defense and prayer, little damage was being done. The other two members of the squad rained computerized death onto the savage group, which was fully taken care of in just a few minutes.
“Good decision, mate.” Joker said in approval.
The squad teleported back to Varrock, confused but victorious, and were greeted by cheers. Jagex Studios, however, did not have the same reaction to the incident.

“Dammit, we sent those guys out over an hour ago…” Timbo vented to the group.
A group of five (Mark, Mark H, Timbo, Andrew, and Paul) were locked inside of the CEOs office, impatiently watching the screen. Mark was signed in on a dummy account, waiting for a reply from the group that had been sent to complete the trade for the much-needed rune stones.
“I bet the liars killed our men and took the grain…” Mark announced to the group.
“That’s illogical; you saw how disciplined and well-thought-out their clan is… they know that doing something as stupid as that would cause a diplomatic issue.” Mark H reasoned.
“Diplomatic? There’s no ‘diplomacy’ in Runescape. This is Jagex’s game, which means Jagex’s rules. As far as I’m concerned, they should have to follow our commands or risk banning!” Paul raged.
“Agreed. They have no right to undermine our efforts to save the game for them; if we lose, everybody loses…” said Andrew, with a touch of arrogance.
“Banning seems a little extreme doesn’t it…?” Mark replied to the group.
“Extreme? This whole situation is extreme!” Timbo yelled, practically making the walls of the elegant office shake.
“I do not think a ban would be very extreme… Think about it: we get rid of their leaders, we can rush in and take the city. Then we get all of the resources they have to ourselves!” Andrew laughed.
“I do not think this is a good idea…” Mark H said, practically whispering.
“Mark, why do you continually refuse to get with the program? The players have no power over us! We can do whatever we want!” Paul said, laughing as if the statement was hilarious.
