CHAPTER 5: THE IMPERIAL VISIT
Dark Empress Yahi did not arrive in the normal way on her visit to Al Kharid. Her convoy arrived early, at midday, but inside her sedan chair was merely the statue of Thammaron. Rois cursed the Empress’ madness under his breath, and ordered the statue be put in the throne room. Rois supervised the readying of the town for Yahi’s visit, and, once all was done, went to the throne room. He looked at the onyx statue. The statue looked back, unwavering, past Rois, into the endless chasms of space, its emerald eyes glowed orange with sunlight. All of a sudden, the light from the setting sun was blocked by a shadow.
“He is impressed with the conquest Rois.” A shrill voice that could only belong to one person cut through the silence of the air.
“My lady,” Rois turned and knelt, “We assumed you were not coming.”
Yahi’s head twitched a few times in quick succession, like a buoy floating on a lake, before she explained in a rather maniac voice.
“Teleports, Rois, are wonderful things. If only our treasury was infinite, I could teleport the entire army to Sophanem to crush the Empire of Sand straight away. But, alas, I am not made of gold.”
Rois, always cynical, thought to himself that they could have afforded it if she hadn’t built all those onyx statues, but decided not to voice such a comment.
“Well, my lady, we have gathered up all the weapons from the dead soldiers of both sides – and the dead civilians – and as a result we have a large supply of weapons and armour.”
Yahi muttered something to Thammaron, who stood on the throne; her hair covered her face, only whispers could be heard. Finally, she turned to Rois.
“Give me the body count report.”
