Suddenly, a thunderous roar came from one of the towers. I looked up, scrambling to my feet as I saw the tower collapsing neatly upon itself. I began to run as far and as fast away as I could. My foot bent backwards at an awkward angle, making me trip. I screamed as my body smashed into the ground. I groped the curb of the street, trying to lift myself back up, but my angle was too badly twisted. I wept as the cloud of debris and poisonous gas billowed closer and closer to me, eager to claim another soul.

“Oh God, save me!” I screeched in my raspy voice as the cloud consumed me, compacting my body into the ground. As I lay there, mouth full of debris, the slow realization washed over me. God wasn’t going to come and save me. God is dead. And as I took that last breath of musty oxygen before I became the 2,114th victim to die in the 9/11 attacks, a haunting question slithered into my very being.

Was he – was God – ever truly alive?

Questions

“Is life precious?” the old man asked the seemingly young woman.

“It depends,” she responded in a distant tone, as if she were reliving the horrors of her youth. “To a person who thirsts for it, it is more precious than gold. To those who drown with life, it is of little value.”

“Is murder evil?” the elder insisted.

“A cat is never evil for eating mice. A deer is no less evil than the lion that eats it. God, if he exists, let people be slaughtered,” she said with such icy hatred that he half-expected the pool of water gathered around her would freeze, “so why should it be?*

*Then you are saying that it is right to kill.”

“In my perception, it is only justified when you are doing it in self-defense or on behalf of another.” She smiled wistfully. “I saved you from those thugs when you were young, remember?”

“What if those men tried to kill me to protect another friend?” There was no answer. “Since those people had the right to kill, that voids your right to kill and I should be dead. As such, your beliefs are convoluted.”

She gazed at him, a stooped man she once took care of, with a knowing that seemed well beyond the hundreds of years she had lived. “Not all questions have answers, or, for that matter, answers you will like.”

“I have all the answers I need, since my God has provided them.”

“Oh, so your God had the luxury of coming down from his throne to answer your questions, all the while letting millions of people out there starve, be infected and be murdered.” The immortal retorted. “He does not exist. He did not save you, I did.”

“Then how can you prove that a bee can fly so gracefully by chance and not by Go—“

“You can*t state a fact, and then use it to claim something that does not exist. I can say that because a bee can fly so gracefully, pink unicorns capable of making magical rainbows exist.” She sighed resignedly. “I tire of this nonsense, young one. Does answering those questions of yours matter? Is it important to be philosophical?"
