Interesting and ironic about your describing the power Orcris uses like this. It very much resembles something I just did to a character in a DnD campaign, and which I somewhat stole from a book.

Nice add, glad to see more character development. I find many stories lacking in true dynamic characters, hopefully with your skill we will see the characters actually grow and learn in more ways than one.

Hope to see more soon.

EDIT: I'm aware there is a sword in Lord of the Rings lore(more specifically it is in the Hobbit and other books about the first age that I have not had the time to read) called Orcrist. I did not get the name from that, I actually heard on TV someone say Orthrus but I heard it as Orcris the first time, thus I decided that I would try that out as my character name for stuff. This series was the first instance of that and in this series its use was solidified thanks to Aqua.

Unfortunately, it might be a little while before I can add some more. For two reasons; now that classes aren't in session, I've been given pretty much double my former work hours, so more work, and less time for writing (but more pay, so it's not all bad.)

The second reason is that one of my sisters thought it necessary to pour a cup of coffee on my computer while I was sleeping because it would be "funny". As such my computer is in for repairs, and will not be back in my possession for another week at the earliest.

Unfortunately, while I can go on a public computer to say, write this, I have a feeling someone would be unhappy if I sat around writing story adds for an hour at a time.

CHAPTER 5 - THE MISTS OF TIME

Warmth… the smell of dew laden grass… where am I? This other scent… flowers? I remember this scent; these are flowers from my homeland. So I am in Prifddinas? How? And this crackling… fire? Also, someone breathing, I am not alone…

Selene slowly opened her eyes. Judging from the darkness, it was night. Her eyes scanned her surroundings in the dim light. Apparently she was in a small campsite, as the small fire about a meter away told her. Perhaps more importantly, she noticed her companions weren’t in sight. Sighing, she shut her eyes again, trying to reconstruct what had happened.

She and Seth had reached the Aural Temple without event, and to their surprise were greeted by... well… a clown; that was the best way to describe him. His face had been painted white with a blue teardrop under his left eye and a star under his right. His clothes were so loose that it appeared as if he would trip over them any second, and his shirt had the most ridiculous frill Selene had ever seen. Upon seeing Selene and Seth approaching, the clown had made an exaggerated bow and with a smile loudly proclaimed; “Good afternoon, good sir and madam, I am sure you are here to see the warlock’s show; however, I regret to inform you it has just ended. But as you can see it was quite some performance.” Here the clown motioned toward a group of Zarosians who were bound with colorful ribbons. Even Selene had only barely managed to suppress a laugh when she noticed the well built Zarosian soldiers straining themselves to escape from such a seemingly flimsy constraint.

“Ah,” said the clown, “And after he was done, the warlock himself vanished! I believe into this temple; it seems he plans to steal the jewel within, and thus I must go in after this would be thief. Unfortunately, as I am an entertainer and not a fighter I cannot best him in combat.”

Not a fighter indeed! Selene thought to herself. When they had reached the warlock, a Zarosian by the name of Ruko, the clown had managed to best a horde of demons that had been acting as the warlock’s guards. She and Seth had charged the warlock, only to be intercepted by Taiyama and a female Zarosian named Weva. And while they were distracted, Ruko had managed to destroy the Light of Hope; a gem which seemed to shine from within. The warlock had then escaped with Weva and Taiyama, sealing the door behind them, thus trapping Seth, the clown, and Selene.

Selene frowned slightly. She was sure she had been caught in the explosion, but seemed to bear no injury from it, and here she was, in a clearing somewhere in Prifddinas, without any memories of arriving. And judging by the fact she was wrapped in a sleeping bag she either had come here herself and now lacked all memory of it, or someone had brought her here, and judging by the sound of soft breathing her elvin ears detected on the other side of the campfire, it was the latter. Deciding that whoever was with her wasn’t an immediate threat, Selene slowly sat up.

“Ah, you woke up. I was worried for a moment.”

The speaker’s voice was similar to an elf’s; similar in pitch to a human woman’* but with a slightly more musical tone. This wasn’t what surprised Selene, after all she was in the elf lands; what surprised her was that the person in front of her seemed human, on top of that, at first glance the person appeared to be an old human, due mostly to having silver white hair. However, Selene noticed the lack of other indicators that would be present if this human was of advanced age, and since the human’s garb consisted of ornate dark robes, the type certain human mages were apt to wear, Selene concluded that the white hair was the result not of age, but a side effect of over-using magic. Perhaps so were the human’s eyes, one of which was the blue of a clear day’s sky, and the other of which was a soft red, similar to rose petals.

Still, Selene was unsure of her new companion’s gender; on the one hand, the human’s voice was not that of a human male, on the other hand, the human did not appear to possess a curvaceous figure that Selene would expect a human female to possess. There were no clues from the human’s hair either, it was longer than that of most human men, and shorter than that of most human women; reaching about halfway down the neck.

“Are you hungry?” asked the human, offering Selene a dish of cooked meat, vegetables, and mushrooms. Selene noticed the human had second dish nearby which was identical except it bore a different kind of meat, probably fowl.

“Ah, so you’re male,” said Selene, smiling at the mage’s apparent surprise.

“Yes,” said the mage, “That normally takes people a little while, how did you know?*

“Your meal,” said Selene, “I assume you understand what I mean by that.”

“Ah, so the elves have heard of that,” said the mage, *I’m surprised.”

“Don’t worry,” replied Selene, “Most elves haven’t, I however, am well traveled. Oh, and we haven’t been introduced have we? I am Selene.”

“Wait,” said the mage, his eyes wide, “Are you THAT Selene? The famous elvin mercenary?”

“Oh, so you’ve heard of me?” asked Selene.

“Is there anyone who hasn’t?” asked the mage, “You’re practically a living legend! Actually, um, if you aren’t busy… there’s a certain mission I need to get done, but I don’t think I’m strong enough for it… If you help me, I’d be able to pay you well for it…”

“What kind of job is it?” asked Selene.

“Um, well,” said the mage, “Recently, Zarosians have been destroying important seals…In fact they destroyed one shortly before I found you in the forest… Anyway, some of them are heading for one of these seals called “The Mists of Time” I was hoping to head them off and stop them from destroying that one.”

“How much?” Selene asked nonchalantly. Of course, she had been planning to go after the Zarosians anyway, but if it would get her more pay, there was no need for the mage to know that.

“Will this do?” asked the mage, tossing her an envelope, which Selene opened to find a bank note for five hundred thousand gold pieces.

“You’re paying it all up front?” asked Selene.

“No, of course not,* the mage replied, “That’s only half, you’ll get the other half if we manage to keep the Zarosians away from the seal.”

Selene whistled under her breath. Apparently, this mage was rich, either that or had a very rich patron. Either way, she had just had an extreme stroke of luck; a million gold pieces for a job she already was going to do.

“Alright kid, you have a deal,” said Selene, careful to keep her enthusiasm hidden, “Since you’re my client now, perhaps I should know your name.”

“Oh,” said the mage, “You’re probably right. It*s Coren.”

Selene blinked in spite of herself, it was clear to her, as it would be to any elf, that the mage was lying.

“Ms. Selene?” said the mage, “Is something wrong?”

“No,* said Selene, regaining her composure, “It’s nothing. Well, nice meeting you, Coren. You should probably get some sleep before setting out tomorrow. I’ll keep watch, so don’t worry.”

“Oh, alright,” said Coren, “Thank you… good night then.”
