"You killed so many in Ardougne, that there you were thought not to be human, but a demon, and brought upon yourself the wrath of the Temple Knights. In the end, you were saved by an aged patron of the arts, who turned out to be a Zarosian. He nursed your fragmented mind back to health, and you, in gratitude, took up loyalty to Zaros."

Orcris stared in shock, he had never heard this story before. But finding Taiyama's head hung low, he realized it was true.

"Who do you think you are?!" demanded Selene, "Speaking of another person's struggles so casually, it's despicable!"

"Who am I?" repeated the middle-aged man, "I am Liam Nidhogg, you've heard of me, yes?

But who are you to call me despicable, Selene? After all, aren't you burdened by your own sin? Did you not only abandon your brother to win fame and fortune, but also enrage the gods so that he was lost?"

At this Selene was silent.

"You!" shouted Orcris, "Why do you speak of such things?!"

"And why do you shout at me?" asked the middle-aged man, taking off his hat. To Orcris' surprise, he disconnected it into two parts, revealing them to be a large cup of tea and a saucer. Furthermore, he had the teacup facing down, so that those on the floor could see the cup's contents, yet they did not spill. "After all," he continued, "You yourself are not free from sin; did you not slaughter your own village; men, women, and children. Some of them wronged you, of course, but did they all? What did those children do to deserve your wrath?"

"I admit it," replied Orcris.

This caused both Taiyama and Selene to look at him in shock.

"I killed at least a hundred innocents," continued with Orcris, "Drunken with power, craving revenge, I killed them all; like you said. I spared none of them, no matter what they pleaded, no matter how they begged."

"And even though you admit it, you feel no remorse?" questioned Liam.

"No, that is wrong," replied Orcris, "I feel remorse, and deeply regret what I have done. However..."

"However?" repeated Liam.

"I cannot change the past," replied Orcris, "This is why... I will live on, not only for myself, but for those I killed. I take full responsibility for the deaths, and shall make amends as I am able by shaping the future! Their deaths will not be meaningless, for I will learn from that terrible mistake, and grow from it, and from now on shall make the lives of others better in repentance for what I have done. Even if my sins weigh me down, it shall not stop me from making a better future!"

To the surprise of everyone present, Liam smiled. "Well done, Orcris," he said, "You are truly the material of a hero; not allowing your past mistakes to weigh you down, but instead, allowing them to shape you into a better person and moving on. Truly impressive."

"That is so boring!" shouted Rose, jumping up and kicking Liam off the ceiling as she said this. Liam fell out of the theatre box, and landed soundly on the floor of the theatre.

"Oh, great," Orcris groaned, realizing that Rose had probably just ruined any chance of the cult of darkness helping Zaros by injuring their leader.

Within moments, the Zarosians, Seth, and Selene made their way down to the main floor of the theatre, where they found Liam twitching in pain.

"This can't be good," groaned Taiyama.

"Probably not," agreed Orcris, "But haven't you noticed?"

"Noticed what?" asked Taiyama.

"I see what you mean," commented Selene.

"What is it?" questioned Taiyama.

"The people watching this play, as well as the actors," Selene began, "Isn't it strange? They apparently didn't notice Liam hitting the ground, nor have they noticed us, even though we've run down to the main floor to help him."

"Well done," said Seth.

"What do you mean, well done?" asked Selene.

"Few people notice it when he does this," replied Hekate, "Seth, if you will?"

"Right," said Seth, "Liam, you've had your fun, now it's time for you to come out."

"Wait, what?" questioned Hekate, but even as she did so, a strange light shown forth from Seth, and the actors, those viewing the play, and the man that the Zarosians had thought was Liam vanished in wisps of smoke. All that remained in the theatre was a single young man with silver-white hair and deep violet eyes, wearing black and purple robes.

"This is?" asked Orcris.

"Yes," said Hekate, "He is the real leader of the cult of darkness; Liam D. Nidhogg."

"My apologies for that," said Liam, bowing to the Zarosians. Orcris was surprised, not only did Liam speak softly, his voice was higher than a normal humans; if Orcris had not known better, he might have mistaken Liam's voice for that of a girl's.

"As Hekate announced, I am Liam," continued the youth, "And as I said, I apologize for putting you through that; I needed to discern what kind of people you were before I revealed myself."

"You had no right!" shouted Selene, "Blurting out people's struggles like that!"

Liam blinked, "Perhaps you are right," he said, "But to me, it was important to discern who you people are, before I make a decision and commit the resources of the cult to any side."

"And I assume we failed?" Taiyama asked bitterly.

"Not necessarily," said Liam, "Besides, if you were to pay attention, you might actually have gained more from that conversation, than I did."

"Explain," demanded Selene.

"Very well," said Liam, "Before, each of you was burdened by your own struggle. Focusing only on this struggle bore you down. But now, you are aware that others have struggles too, with this knowledge, you should realize that you are not alone, and thus, your struggles should seem lighter."

"Do you think that makes up for what you did?!" questioned Selene.

"Each person keeps his or her struggles to him or herself," observed Liam, "People do this, because of pride; they do not want others to know their weaknesses, and they fear being ridiculed or mocked. Yet, oftentimes, other people can help with these struggeles, and also, the keeping of such secrets can sometimes drive one to despair."

"You think I'm going to accept that?!" demanded Selene,

"Maybe not," sighed Liam, "So then tell me, Selene, who are you?"

"Don't you know?" questioned Selene, "After all, you just said my name."

"And a name is important," commented Liam, "But it is not all that is you; who is Selene, really? If you try to answer that question, not just to me, but yourself, what will you say? Will you list your accomplishments and failures? Your like and dislikes? Your dreams for the future? Your race and occupation? Your beliefs? Do you even know? And which of these is most important in defining you?"

"This boy, what's with him?" Taiyama asked.

"I'm sorry," said Liam, "I am just curious of such things; you see, I do not know my past, except for bits and pieces."

The Zarosians and Selene stared at Liam in shock when he said this.

"You see," continued Liam, "If I ask myself; who am I? What am I to say? I can give my name, what I feel, what I think, what I dream, but I do not know... Does my past effect these things? If I know my past, will things be different?... I wish to know my past, but I am afraid of what it might reveal. What if I am not who or what I think I am? What if I am someone else?"

"I see," commented Orcris, "We were quick to judge you, since you revealed so much about us, but in reality, you bear a burden heavier than ours."

"I really don't get it," sighed Taiyama, "Could you explain, Orcris?"

"You, Selene, and I," replied Orcris, "We have faults, yes, but we know these faults. We can accept them and move on, or allow them to weigh us down. Yet, Liam, he does not know his faults, thus he is burdened with fear... fear of what he might have done, of what he might do when he finds out. He doesn't know how his past effects him now, nor how it could effect him if he knows it better."

"Then is there anything you do know with certainty?" questioned Taiyama.

"Yes," said Liam. Having said this, he gave Usha a look of pure adoration and trust, "I know love... the thing that is an emotion, yet far more than an emotion; an altering of my very will and my soul. I know it will remain steadfast no matter what may come, as long as I do not despair of it. But this also brings me fear; what if something in my past or from my past harms the one I love? That... is something I cannot stand the thought of."

Hearing this, Orcris put his hand on Liam's shoulder, causing Liam to look at him.

"Do you want to find out your past, in spite of the fear?" Orcris asked.

Liam hesitated, but nodded nonetheless.

"Then I will help you," said Orcris, "So long as we are not enemies, I shall lend you my aid. You have my word."

Liam's eyes widened in surprise, and then, he smiled. Perhaps surprisingly, it was like the smile of a child, and Orcris found himself wondering if he could make that smile because without knowing his past, no fault nor sin could lay claim to him.

"I see," said Liam, "In that case, the cult of darkness will aid you. As our first act of aid, we will reveal the location of the Stone of Jas to you, for that is the final seal on the black pentagram."

"Thank you," said Orcris, "Where is it?"

Liam paused, and a troubled look crossed his face, "North of the wilderness," he finally said, "With the mahjarret, Lucien."

Well that was certainly a nice add. It also revealed the twins make most the other adventurers in the group look bad.

I liked how you delved into the background of several characters. While we already knew this of Selene, this added much to Taiyama's character. And I liked how Orcris responded. Liam seems like an interesting character. I wonder if he lost his knowledge of his past by peering into the darkness...

Ah Lucien, dear old Lucien, this will certainly be interesting. While I have yet to do that quest I know how it turns out thanks to a conversation with the writer here. While it may be that some of them want to stop the destruction of the Stone, I have a feeling they do not want it in the hands of Lucien or anyone else of such power and ill intentions for it. I'm eager to see how they fair.

Glad to hear you liked it Orcris. As I think I mentioned before, Liam's past should prove even more interesting than Aquaregis'. I don't want to spoil anything, but I think it should be alright to say that by learning about Liam's past, you'll actually learn a decent part of Aquaregis' past.

Come to think of it, this story's almost over... Wow, I guess that means that Weapons of Destiny will be back on the site shortly.

"My, it certainly has been interesting since I joined up with you," commented Daefon, as he trudged through the snow-laden land.

"I apologize," sighed Jun, "But it seems we're almost there, so please bear with it..."

Daefon nodded, but a few moments later collapsed, clutching his chest.

"What's wrong?" questioned Jun, trying to help her companion up.

"This... feeling..." gasped Daefon, "Can it be?"

"It is," answered Sven. Jun was shocked, for once the ghost cat was being entirely serious.

"It is what?" asked Jun.

"The Staff of Armadyl; he who is lord of justice and master of the skies," replied Sven, "That very staff is nearby, and seems to be in the hands of someone who has another great source of power; one unlike anything I have ever felt."

"The Fist of Guthix," Daefon guessed, "Someone has both it and my lord's staff, has something like this ever happened before?"

"Yes," replied Sven, "And it worries me... the last person to have both was Zamorak, only back then he wasn't a god."

"Are you saying that whoever has them now is likely to become a god?" asked Jun.

"It is a possibility," said Sven, "But there is something else which worries me."

"And that is?" asked Daefon.

"In the Second Age, while Guthix slept," said Sven, "A new god appeared in Gielinor. Little was thought of him, after all, he was new, and without followers. On top of this, at the time, the world was controlled by basically four factions; Saradomin, god of wisdom and order controlled one, Seren, goddess of fate controlled a second, Armadyl, god of justice controlled the third, and the gods and goddesses of the Menaphite Pantheon controlled the last. It was thought that with all the world professing allegiance to one of these factions, no new god could ever rise to power."
