The two walked down that long hallway, that long, unending hallway. They thought about all that they were told upon this day, and what laid in wait for them in the future. It took a long time, but they finally reached those stairs leading up to the world. They ascended up those glorious stairs, leaving behind the darkness and life of the Desert Assassins below.

Step by step, their feet came down upon the stone steps. Before they knew it, they were ankle-deep in golden sand. The sun was coming close to the edge of the world, implying that it was a late time. As soon as the two made it out from the mouth of darkness, they began to feel a rumble beneath their feet. The two turned to face what was behind them, watching sand cascade onto the stairs.

The doors beneath the sand began to move in the opposite way that they did when the two came in through here. The stone hands then began to come together, closing shut to cut off all connection between the Assassins and the outside world. With a loud thud to confirm, the doors were now completely closed.

Raphael then turned to Daevarro. "Let's get back to Lumbridge," he said. With a nod of his head to confirm his agreement, Daevarro and the young leader began to walk forward. They drifted across the sands of time, their minds still occupied with the thoughts of all that they learned today. But little did they realize, something very wrong would be waiting for them...

Me again, unsurprisingly.

“striking them out at a temperature of one-hundred-and-eight degrees Fahrenheit”
That’s about forty degrees Celsius, pretty hot. It can get up to fifty degrees Celsius where I work (about 120 degrees Fahrenheit according to my thermometer) when you go in-between the dryers; it makes you sweat literally within a second.

Big hot desert, long-armed lady statue, assassins.

“Long ago, on our homeworld, Asmodeus”
Hunh, I’ve also used the name Asmodeus in a story, for a demon king (unsurprisingly). Demons’ names and God’s name from the Middle East and Bible sound so cool. Elohim, Adonai, Azazel, Apolyon, Abaddon, Moloch and Melqart are some examples.

Well, that’s all for now, I hope my posting all the time isn’t annoying. It’s like this whole forum is dead.

Oh hush, your posting is most definitely not annoying, not even in the slightest. xD Anyway!

I'm aware that that degree is pretty hot. I've never been in a desert, but I did my research (as far as looking it up on the internet is concerned, anyway.) But yeah! Deserts are really hot! But of course, that's really obvious. :P

Oh, I see! Yeah, I think Biblical names are pretty cool too.

Anyway, thank you very much once again for your time and for reading. I appreciate it, as always.

(not using a computer to post is really weird.)

Chapter 17: Despaired

Her trembling body took a step backwards, its language howling confusion and shock. Her eyes the size of acorns, her jaw laid open upon the floor. She simply could not believe the words her ears had just heard, in fact maybe part of her didn't want to believe. Her spare hand covered her gapping mouth, her breath stolen straight out from her lungs.

And then there he stood, his face barely visible as the fire of the torch flickered, breathing heavily in and out. He faced the very obviously flabbergasted archer, but his eyes were turned away from her. That was one thing that he just couldn't quite get to face. He headed forth into that fire, nervously steadfast.

As her body ran with the rush of a shivering chill, she shook her head. "That can't be right..." she mumbled in disbelief. "He would never...!"

Telvern shrugged. "I never said you had to believe me," the genius stated, then raised his left hand. "Just think about for a moment though. Doesn't it just nestle perfectly with all that has happened?"

Even though that smidge of her was shouting at the top of its lung a million reasons why not to buy what the genius was selling, she contemplated for just a second. Her mind flew back all those months, from the very best moments to the very worst. With the information she had in hand, she now found those memories strangely altered.

From his smile, his personality, even his face, she found all these now so very different. Those warm and tender feelings she had, perhaps maybe even calling it affection, then suddenly begun to change. She then shook off this doubt, this anxiety, and then pointed her blade at the genius. Her certainty wearing thin, her face from disbelief back to anger. "You're lying!" she swiftly asserted. "There's no reason for me to believe anything you've told me!"

Telvern sighed. "Yes, that is very true," he replied. "And you're very wise to distrust me. But this is just one of those things that I can't lie about. Don't believe everything else I've told you, fine. But this is absolutely not a lie."

"And why exactly should I believe that?"

He closed his eyes, his hand then rose even higher. His index finger then planted itself upon the right side of his forehead. "It's amazing how many secrets people keep in their own heads," he said. "You think it's the safest place, right? Not with others, where it can exposed by those with loosened or slippery tongues. Not on a piece of paper locked away in some vault that can be broken into. No, the best place to keep it is right here, safely tucked away inside your own head."

Elena raised her eyebrow. "Where are you going with all of this?" she began to question.

"Simple," Telvern responded, lowering his hand. "I heard it from Divus, who thought that exact same thing."

"Wait..." Elena quickly returned. "You heard it from my father... when he kept it to himself?"

His brown gaze taking aim for Elena, opening back up to be captured by the world. "You're currently thinking about whether or not to buy what I'm telling you," the genius stated. "But you're being held back by your feelings for Raphael. And because you're angry with me, you really wish to kill me."

Elena once more was taken aback by his evaluation of her. "Heh," he then very lightly chuckled, letting out an equally soft grin. "But that's just basic human instinct, right? Mind if I go further?"

His eyes then felt as though it was just cutting right through her. He was no longer staring at just her, but staring at her very soul. She looked upon him, the command to rush forward towards him inching ever closer to her eager hand. Telvern's eyes searched for something to get her to believe him, scanning all across to find that perfect answer.

"Ah," he spoke all of a sudden, wagging his hand forward and backward. "so Raphael ordered you to not confront me until the proper time, eh? Well, so much for that..."

Telvern tilted his head slightly to the right. "Then you're going to tell Raphael that your hand was forced," the genius continued. "Well, that'll be an iffy one, won't it?"

"So, it seems your Solasúian power is to read minds,"

Telvern spanned his arms out. "Just like my crazy grandfather!" Telvern declared. "Isn't it just wonderful that I can continue on his legacy?"

"You wouldn't call him "crazy" if you thought it was "wonderful,""

"Oookay, so I played on it a bit!" he confirmed. "But it's just so fortunate that I had such a man as my grandfather. I mean, this power -- his power -- is just so convenient for a devious, diabolical man like myself!"

"Telvern..." she sorrowfully named.

Telvern laid his arms back down to his side. "Anyway, I've answered all of your questions to the tee." the genius said. "Now, if you'd excuse me..."

Elena braced herself, getting ready to engage. "No," she denied him. "You're not going anywhere!" Her left foot then darted forward, the other foot would follow just behind. She readied that blade of steel, gripping tightly as she rushed forward to meet the enemy. Her eyes beamed forward towards the genius, who stared back at her with his fearless expression.

From his lips, a shrill, sharp noise; a quick little whistle. A mountain of junk beside the genius then began to buckle, causing books and whatever to fall down like an avalanche. Then the mountain suddenly exploded, causing quite the mess to spill all over the floor. Paper fluttered in the air, gently swaying back and forth as it slowly fell down.

And then all she knew was this powerful force flat-out tackled her from the front. She felt this intense force, a very strong energy, just push her backward. She then began to fall backwards towards the ground, the back of her head kissing the checkerboard earth. Her back slammed against the hard floor, causing quite the thud. She gripped her teeth, attempting to get back to her feet.

But she felt herself restrained, unable to move even in the slightest. Her pale blue eyes gazed to her forward, seeing the rather large teeth of a ferocious beast. It gazed down at her, snarling as it drew its fang. Like a cave ceiling of stalactite, liquid rolled down its bare fangs. The saliva then oozed down upon Elena's skin, hitting her right in the face.

The beast was in fact the large and very dangerous Talon Beast, one Telvern was very familiar for. The thing for which it was named after dug into Elena's arms, pinning her to the ground. She tried very hard in order to pick herself up, but that beast wouldn't so much as even budge. Its tail whipped left and right, its warm breath pushed forward upon the archer's face.

Telvern then turned to his desk, beginning a search for something. "Now, now," he said, finding a very sharp dagger. It appeared much like a rondel dagger, which was reminiscent of an ice pick. He then began walking over to the beast. "There was no need to be that belligerent..."

"Is complaining all you do, ape?" the Talon Beast then responded, its head turning to Telvern as he approached. To Elena however, the Talon Beast appeared to only growl, not actually speak. "You're always, "yap, yap, blah, blah, dribble, dribble, dribble!" It's so... noisy."

"Well, there's a reason for that, you know," Telvern then stated, crossing his arms.

"Well, I don't care," the Talon Beast replied, then turning back to Elena. The two held a conversation, one this archer was unable to understand. "So, who's the ape here? ...Do I get to bite it?"

"No," the genius answered.

"...Not even a nibble?"

"No..." he repeated himself.

The Talon Beast then just stared at Telvern, looking away from him a moment later. It then sighed in defeat. "...You're so dull," the Talon Beast frustratedly growled.

"Just keep her down," the genius ordered. "I'm not asking much, am I?"

"I guess not," it thought. "But I'm so bored, and this is really boring. I wanna fight something!"

"Soon," he assured his beast, walking passed it and Elena. He came to the wall which concealed the ladder leading back up to the earth. He paused, looking back at the two. "Don't kill her, all right? She is, after all, my sister."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah..." it spoke back to Telvern, acknowledging its command.

Elena glared backwards as far as she could. "You were expecting me, weren't you!?" Elena shouted at Telvern as he began walking. "That's how you managed to get the Talon Beast hiding! You knew I would come!"

Telvern turned to Elena, shaking his head. "No," he answered, denying her belief. "It's a precaution in case someone does come down while I speak with Lord Balor."

He then sighed. "Well, it's been lovely chatting with you," he said, then he began walking away. "Farewell."

"Telvern, stop!" she pleaded him. "Please don't do this!" Her words would send him to a pause, his hands upon the ladder and his left foot on the first step. He thought about it truly, deeply for just a moment within the lowest, most truest part of his soul. He closed his eyes, letting out a deep, lamentful sigh. With the sharp, straight dagger in his hand, Telvern began to climb up that ladder. His intentions were clear, yet were so murky that they couldn't be determined.

His steps upon the ladder were obvious to hear in this silence room. Her ears caught that sound, causing her to try even harder than last time to get up. The beast stood upon her wrists, she was unable to do anything with her sword. She struggled with all of her might, trying as hard as humanly possible to ascend. But as history had shown, the strength of a normal Solasúian wasn't even enough to pick this beast up.

She tried everything she could, even launching her leg upwards and kicking the back of the beast's hind legs. Kick after kick after kick came as swiftly as raindrops hitting the ground, but all this effort gave no payout. Instead, it merely made the beast angry. It came back with a roar, a ire-filled shout that showered both hot air and saliva upon her.

Its talons dug deeper into her arm, causing more pain to clench her. No matter what, she realized, she mustn't give up. She just had to keep on the fight! Her head spun around with a thousand miles of thoughts, concerns, fears, and questions. Her heart pounded fast, apprehensive of the future's hand played out before her. She shook and struggled, but it was all in utter vain.

Outside, the sun had begun to lay its head down upon the lap of the world. The sky looked as though it were on fire, a beautiful mixture of oranges and purples, with a few clouds to act as the smoke. The air wasn't too frigid either, being above the freezing mark. Beyond the castle gates, Uriel sat by the River Lum.

He sat upon a hard, flat-topped rock, gazing into the river. His eyes captured the silhouettes of fish, presumably pike, roaming freely across the calm waters. He was up to his heels in dirt, his shoes having yet another badge to mark one of the many places Uriel has been to. Around him, a few dead trees, some broken in half.

To the boy's left, the stone-brick bridge that crossed the river. To his right, an old, abandoned house. Its prime far behind it, having become an aged, withered shell of its former self. The walls were crumbling, the ceiling caved in, and the door was broken inward. It was barely fit to be called a building, let alone a house.

He sat there, taking in the view. That chilly but refreshing breeze hit him directly, blowing his hair and arm cloak towards the east. He closed his eyes, drawing all of that air into his lungs. He then let go, calming himself as he threw away any sort of negativity that might have held him. A tall, unmistakable man, whose eyes kept watch over the boy, stood just beside him.

He was like an eagle keeping watch over its children, not letting a single thing escape his sight. He had his hands tied together behind his back, facing the River Lum along with Uriel. Uriel then looked up at Soter, who took notice of him. "Hey, Soter," the boy said. "exactly why do you serve the Elder Gods?"

"They brought me back to life in order to protect you," Soter answered. "If they die, I die. And I cannot fulfill my duty if I am dead."

"Well, why is your duty tied to them?"

"I live off of their lifeforce, their energy," he explained. "I'm sure that they take me out of this world as easily as they brought back into it."

"Is that the only reason?" the boy continued on his assault of questions. "Do you only serve them 'cause they keep you alive?"

"Is that not the reason why most men fight?" returned Soter. "Most men who serve under a lord fight in order to protect something, in essence to keep their lives safe. Some choose to fight for something like honor and glory, as though somehow spilling one's blood upon a plane of grass can bring one such things. I do not believe that to be true, so fighting to keep oneself alive seems reasonable enough."
