“Gregory! I am glad I have finally caught you. I let you free before, because I saw that you were simply defending the territory of Saradomin, but it seems obvious that you will be targeting Zamorak next! Your ability to defeat six Mahjarrat with ease is impressive, but there is a god to deal with now! Surrender yourself, and maybe your torment will not be too great!”

“Surrender myself? Guthix, have you even seen what I am capable of? I have a degree of power unattained, or even dreamed of by men. Do you truly find yourself up to the match?”

Gregory slowly made his way close to Lucien as he spoke.

“Fool! Don’t you see that there is a GOD in this matter now? You are doomed!”

“I will take my chances, seeing that I will be put into torment anyway if I surrender myself,” Gregory stated, as he reached down and picked up the Staff of Armadyl from Lucien’s limp hand.

“Ah, you seek to become a god, do you?”

“No I do not, I simply want a simple and enjoyable life, but as things appear at this time, I have the power of a god, AND the Staff of a god. Your position is not as strong as you guess it to be Guthix...”

“The power of a god? That cannot be accounted for.”

“Yes it can. Go ahead, attack me... Guthix.”

Guthix’s face darkened. “Witnesses, come forth! There must be proof that this is a fair match.”

Saradomin and Zamorak appeared on each side of Guthix and Gregory.

“Do you two witness to the fact that Gregory challenges me to a duel?”

“We do,” the two gods stated.

“Then let it be a fair one.” Guthix used magic to draw a white circle around the entire area, giving plenty of space for the battle.

“If either of us intentionally steps out of this circle, their life is forfeit. If they are pushed out or fall out, they may come back in. Do you agree, Gregory?”

“I do. Let us begin!”

The people in the city of Varrock were crowded on the walls, flabbergasted at seeing not one, not two, but all THREE of the primary gods of Runescape gathered in one place. The six Mahjarrat hobbled away to a safe distance, and sat down to watch the match.

The battle began.

Guthix was a very versatile opponent, using all three combat styles, but he soon learned that that was not a good idea. Gregory had carefully trained himself to be incredibly effective against both range and melee, and so the only skill that was practical against him was mage.

Gregory cast spell after spell at Guthix, who returned in like kind. It looked like fireworks were exploding on the ground, for the speed and power of the spells emitted great amounts of light.

Drawing his swords, Gregory held them up to the sky, and they were hit by five lightning bolts each. He then swung at Guthix, who summoned a sword out of his hand, and they fought hard and fast.

Gregory lunged, ducked to avoid his opponent’s swing, and stabbed Guthix in the chest. The full power of the five lightning bolts wracked Guthix’s body, and he cried out. The pain was weakening, but not fatal. Guthix regenerated, and fought back.

The swords clashed back and forth. Gregory was not fooled by Guthix’s tricks, and swung carefully, stabbing Guthix yet again. He charged his swords with his own bodily power, and cast a spell so great, so hot, so powerful, and so bright, that it deafened the people of Varrock and blinded Guthix for several seconds.

A storm began to form, by Gregory’s instigation.

“Guthix, there was no rule made about natural disasters occurring in our fight.”

Gregory caused lightning to fall out of the sky constantly, and he caught many bolts with his swords and body. Whenever Guthix made a step, Gregory opened the earth just in front of his foot, and shut it once the foot was inside.

Guthix would be temporarily impaired, until he could open the earth again himself and get his limb out. Sometimes he just ripped the leg off and regenerated it, although this took more time.

Guthix also started using natural disasters as weapons, and once he caused a great crack to open in the earth, and water flooded out of it like a geyser. It was quite disconcerting to Gregory. He began freezing the ice as it came out, until it was no longer able to flood.

The battle continued, with constant blasts of energy and surges of fire going back and forth, and neither side could get the upper hand.

Whenever Gregory was hurt or tired, he would draw on the power of lightning to reenergize himself, and whenever Guthix was impaired, he would draw on the power of nature to regenerate.

The battle continued, and continued, and did not cease. Varrock went to sleep, the sun retired, and night drew on. The battle grew ever hotter, and Gregory began to wonder if it would ever end.

Seven days later, Gregory and Guthix were still fighting. Luckily for Gregory, empowering himself with lighting also eliminated his need for sleep or food, as it provided him with all the energy he needed. Finally, as the seventh day came to a close, Guthix stopped, and looked back and forth to the profoundly bored faces of Saradomin and Zamorak.

As Gregory was about to blast Guthix again, Guthix said, “Stop! There is no use fighting anymore.”

Zamorak’s eyes lit up again, and Saradomin looked at Gregory hopefully.

“Have you finally figured out that this battle will go on for infinity Guthix? If I wished to, I could hold you here for many years, until the day of my death, and Runescape would be able to do whatever they wanted, without the interference of any gods.”

“I have realized that. I believe the only way out of this situation is to end the duel, with terms.”

“Very good. What are your terms?”

“My terms are that you will never use your power to interfere in the power of the gods, and will not attempt to break the balance of the world. In return, I will not bother you, and let you live your life freely.”

“I cannot accept that, but I have other terms which you might take. In return for freedom in everything, even freedom to interfere in the god’s affairs, I will return to you the Stone of Jas, and return the Staff of Armadyl to the Guardians of Armadyl. I will not ruin the balance of Runescape, but I may take sides in great wars.”

Guthix’s eyes lit up. YOU have the Stone? I will accept your deal, if you show me the Stone.”

“Very well.” Much to the mortification of the six bored Mahjarrat still watching, the Stone of Jas appeared in front of Guthix as Gregory summoned it from its hiding place.

“Here it is. Will you accept the deal?”

“I will.”

“Very good. I will take my leave now.*

Gregory teleported away, and all three of the gods vanished, along with the Stone of Jas, leaving the Mahjarrat staring at each other in absolute fury at having lost everything, from the Staff of Armadyl, to the Stone of Jas, to even Gregory himself!

Lucien, facing Varrock with all the Mahjarrat behind him, said, “Our fellowship is over. Our goal to stop Gregory from having the Stone has succeeded, although were not the ones to do it. I suppose it is best that we not get the Stone, for it would probably end in all of us destroying each other.” Turning and facing them, he said, “Go. We are no longer allies. We are Mahjarrat.”

Saying this, he teleported away, as did the other five. The Mahjarrat never had such a union again, for at the most two of them used each other for their own purposes.

Epilogue

“So, how have you enjoyed my story?” asked the old man. “There is yet a bit more
to tell. In the end, Gregory made a good home in the woods where he first learned
magic, and stayed there, enhancing his skills for the future. He was given a gift by
Saradomin that permitted him to stay alive and vigorous for as long as wished, and
then decide if he wished to die. He became an old man to the eye, but his strength,
skill, and youth remained as strong as ever.”

“He later learned that Lucien had somehow managed to regain the Stone of Jas AND
the Staff of Armadyl, and had tried to force the obedience of the other Mahjarrat
when they had their next Ritual. However, he was eventually defeated by some
adventurer or other.

I am sure you are curious as to where to Gregory is now. He has not chosen to die
yet, and still tells his story.”

“Can you guess where he is?”

The old man winked, and played with a little ball of fire in his hand.

Well that’s it for the “Rediscovery of Pure Magic!” I had a lot of fun writing it, and as
you can probably see, I could easily write a sequel, do to the continuable ending.
Hope you enjoyed the story, and hopefully I’ll have the inspiration to write more
sometime soon!

(In case you didn't quite remember what the epilogue meant, read the prologue at
the beginning of this story.)

“I am sure you all experienced what I did last night,” began John,
For some reason, that doesn't really sound right o.0

On post 8, first paragraph, "“I will explain. I used the Stone in a very unique and different way." 'Very unique' does not make sense in context, as unique means 'one of a kind' so it can't be 'very one of a kind' so to speak. Just thought I'd point that out.

Oh those Mahjarrat, all they do is look at each other, complain, bicker and then realise it was all for nothing. I didn't except that coming, so nice ending for them. I always liked it when authors don't only have focus upon the heroes, but also on other characters, and you even referenced whoever happens to be the 'hero' of RuneScape, which is also nice, I've done that too a few times. I did have a hunch that Greg was the narrator just as I began reading the epilogue.

So the story went a long way. From boyhood to godhood, back to himself, Greg's adventure was dramatic in nature, without boundaries.
And then it ends, look at that, now you can have a break. Take your time, though, it's not a race.

But what about those giant castles that were built? Or did I forget something about them?

First I want to mention that I was very amused by the fact that this recent Runespans update totally confirmed my entire thesis as to how Gregory originally obtained his power.

“I am sure you all experienced what I did last night,”

I don't understand, what about the sentence doesn't sound right?

"very unique"

Ha, funny I didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing it out.

I had a lot of fun with the Mahjarrat. Their personalities are all completely controlled by lust for power, avarice, hate, and domination. When anything goes against them, their first impulse is to strike back and get revenge, whatever the cost.

I really enjoyed depicting them in a position in which they lost the greatest chance of their lives, the Stone of Jas, and the person who had taken it was utterly beyond their ability to fight. This is the only case in my experience in which a Mahjarrat is actually seen to GIVE UP, and the other five with him. They know that any resistance is futile, and Gregory is more then a match for them all.

I probably won't post the sequel for a while, seeing as the forums are so cold anyway. I'm hoping for people to start looking at these story forums more often. However, I have written the first drafts of the first three chapters, and... well I almost regret that they won't be posted for a long time. I had a sudden inspiration and they came out really well.

And remember, Guthix destroyed Gregory's citadel.

PS: One of my favorite phrases of the last chapter was this:

"Finally, as the seventh day came to a close, Guthix stopped, and looked back and forth to the profoundly bored faces of Saradomin and Zamorak."

Ha!

Yeah, the update was a pleasant surprise even for me. Maybe JAGEX are getting some ideas from the Stories forum :P

“I am sure you all experienced what I did last night,” began John,
There's nothing wrong with that in context, but for some reason I began thinking of unclean thoughts upon reading it, but never mind about that, it's just me being weird. Reminded me of something I went through in real-life.

Your portrayal of the Mahjarrat was done in a way I had never seen/read before, so that really was nicely done, wasn't expecting that. So yeah, well done on that.

It's ok to take a break, too, no worries. "Story-grinding" is not a good way to make a story; it's not a race, and ideas should never be rushed. Mothers don't pressure their babies to be born early either.

Oh, Greg's castle was destroyed, right. Even I forget things and I have a good memory, but I think it's fair to say that when we read other peoples' stories it's a bit harder to memorize them.

I liked that line too.

Hmm, now I'll have to find something else to do. :/
If I'm lucky, maybe I'll end up critiquing another story that ends up becoming a polished product too.

Heehee.

“I am sure you all experienced what I did last night,”

Ahh, I see. I think I can imagine what the real-life occurence was...

Greg's castle is goneo. In fact, it is SO goneo, that Guthix couldn't find it again when he was looking for the remains!

JK lol.

See you... another day, Azi. :P
