When his father had calmed down, Gregory asked him,
“Why was that merchant trying to get you in trouble?” He knew that this question, however small, would get him a complete answer, as his father was obviously hungry to tell his troubles to a sympathetic audience.
“Well,” John began, “it all started when, one day, my father, that is your grandfather, accidentally upset the stall of the father of the merchant you saw me quarreling with today. I don’t know how it happened, but somehow, my father was responsible for the loss of some of the delicate goods in that stall. He apologized, and offered to pay for the loss, but the other man formed a grudge and refused to give reconciliation. The feud grew and grew, and eventually, it became what it is, a monstrous and constant quarrel between the two families.”
“Wow,” Gregory exclaimed, “I did*’t know that the feud went back that far. I hope I won’t be the next person to continue it.” His father smiled. Gregory’s mother called from the kitchen and said it was time for his to go to bed. He went upstairs, got ready for bed, and laid down, pondering the occurrences of the day. But the night was not to be as peaceful as other nights had been, and he would awake to a very different life then before.
