"It would be quite simple for me to disguise your wings and arm, watcher," Umbra said thoughtfully. "You would require little acting, as you are already bipedal, and there would be little chance for error, as you would only need to prevent your hidden wings from brushing against anybody. The dragons... it would be equally simple for me, but be quite difficult to act out. They would need to prevent anybody from contacting their much larger bodies... not to mention the strength of their breathing is greater than your kind, which would be noticeable. While I could mask things such as footprints or bent grass... my range is limited. I also cannot alter voices."

"This is the center of the Abyssal rift opened during the Rend through which Nihil was cast into the Abyss. The barrier between the Abyss and both halves of the world is particularly thin here... that is why magical phenomonae occur... and while things of the Abyss stalk the ruins. Normally the barrier is sufficient enough to prevent the magical force from leaking over to for actual magic to be used... but the Darkstar weakens the rift between the world when it nears, causing the nature of each half to seep into the other... although the surge of its power tends to 'overload' normal forces and cause them to not act normally. Here the barrier is already thin enough that the halves nearly merge... in addition to the Abyss. That is why magic fills these ruins on the eve of the Darkstar... and why Abyssal creatures flood into this part if the world."
"As for bring magic here... I can think on the matter, but I do not know how one would do so. It would require weakening the barrier to bring that area of the world closer together. It would also require a... delicate touch, lest you also bring the Abyss closer. I expect a modified form of Abyssal rituals and magic might be the key... They both draw on the Abyss, which requires reaching through the barrier. It would simply need to be... redirected. Flawlessly."

Strange lights began to play across the surface of the ritual stone, which appeared to increase the ritualists' enthusiam. Raw power broke into the circle, similar lights sparking into existence in the air as magic broke through into the surrounding area. The man bound to the tree seemed to perk up slightly and began fiddling with his bonds.
Around Thlorian's site, untold power had begun surging within the massive, miles-wide ritual circle, the air seeming alive with shimmering power. Whispers and hisses began murmuring throughout the area, the black stone in the very center flaring with light. Soon...

"That would not be a problem. We have the technology to do so. With things like tracking devices, cameras, and so on, there is no way a determined group of people could ever lose track of the subject. Of course, the subject would have to be someone who is willing to endure such conditions for the rest of his life. I'm sure that one could find many such volunteers if they looked long enough and filled people in on the stakes." Matt said.

Matt slapped his face with his arm. "Of course, Umbra! Why did I call you Nihil? I am sorry. I don't know what came over me. But back on topic, you are correct of course. If humanity up and made peace with all other kinds then there would be no risk of destruction. I doubt that is going to happen in the near future however. We humans have had a troubled history in Neuva. For much of our history we were a slave race. The last humans were only freed from slavery a century or so ago. The common thought among humans is that this is revenge for what we endured. Basically, we developed technology that turned the tide of war into our favour. Now many want blood. I was like that until recently. It only seemed natural to hate that which is not human. Lately I have been thinking about the current state of affairs. I see it as sort of a necessary phase that our kind has to go through. At our core, we are still afraid that peace will bring us back to what we had before. It may sound cruel but I believe this is how things must be for a while. After our rage settles down, maybe then we can become peaceful. But I believe any attempt to force peace before we are ready will only lengthen the time the wars continue."

"That may be for the best. The mortal may be in draconic territory but there are raids by both sides across the border all the time (though I admit that my people raid more then the dragons do). Plus, depending on where the mortal is, we may find the area to be the centre of a battle between humans and dragons. If war does break out then the Imperium may decide to 'colonize' some additional territory while her soldiers are waging battle. It wouldn't be the first time. If everyone else were to assume the guise of slayers, then that should be enough to satisfy most humans we run across. Hell, they may even give us some idea of where the mortal is hiding." Matt replied.

A couple of the men exchanged glances. "What sorcery is this?" One muttered. "Those lights... how can they be?" "I have seen such things before. In the other world. The heretics can create lights such as these using their vile tricks. But... Emperor preserve me, they should not be able to do so here." Another replied. One of the snipers pointed towards the bound man. "The poor soul is struggling. It seems he is not with the heathens. A pity we cannot free him, right Brother-Captain?" "Indeed. Not until they complete the ritual. We need to know what is being done here."

''We would not have to worry about my wings as I can remove them as they are artificial. My main concern was my tainted arm but after what you have said that is no longer my biggest concern. Also it would be in the best interest of safety if the mortal was in fact in Draconic territory if the Imperium is as harsh as our friend Matt makes it out to be." nodded Rhen when Umbra had finished talking of the illusions.

''So in other words....in order for magic to permanently exist here without the darkstar; we would have to reach through the barrier and tether the two sections of the word together to a point where they weaken the barrier. Creating a tether would be the easy part but reaching through the barrier and maintaining the tether would be the hardest part I agree. Hmmm.....an interesting puzzle indeed. Perhaps and this is just theory mind you....once Thlorian becomes the leader or whatever of the abyss, perhaps he might be able to help with the matter of breaching the barrier and tethering the two halves together since he would have more authority on Abyssal rituals and magic. But it is a stretch.'' said Rhen in contemplation.

~To tie the two halves of the world together in one place would be a magical feat beyond all things. It might even lead to bringing the world back together entirely but then what chaos would ensue when then technology from Nueva meets magic from Elune? Perhaps it might not be a good idea after all to even attempt to tie the one part to another. But it might be the only chance other outcasts like myself might be able to live in peace away from ridicule.~ Rhen pondered silently to himself, well aware that Animus could hear his thoughts should he choose to listen.

"Perhaps your technology may be capable of such a feat. Perhaps not. I believe the greatest risk would be the watchers of your volunteer may grow lax as years pass, or perhaps they may fail to pass on the severity of the task to their successors. If you succeeded, you would have a tiny chance of influencing Nihil. If you prevented compromised individuals from acting, of course."

"Hmm... perhaps the influence of a certain ancient could influence the tide of things..." Umbra pondered. "Is there any ideal or power of some sort with special significance in this Imperium? If an ancient exists which represents this ideal, it may be able to influence this blood war. As for slavery... perhaps you were a slave race, perhaps not. Most likely your status differred all about this half of the world; it is extremely rare for an entire race to exist in slavery, even if it is widely oppressed. However, history is quite fluid and easily manipulated. It has always been common for oppressed races to demonize their oppressors and exaggerate or falsify parts of the past to justify treating their oppressors just as poorly or worse than they were treated when the tables turn. Either way, I'm uncertain the 'rage of your race' will cool quickly enough for your salvation, considering your earlier mention of the near extinction of various races of dragons."

"The mortal seems quite apt at avoiding detection," Animus noted. "Particularly by humans. Ever since departing from Anima, sightings of him have been very few for the time he seems to have spent in the wilderness. I would expect he has enough sense to avoid incursions with adequate warning. Umbra would likely sense him best. He is like a void in the physical world to most of the senses of ancients."

"The illusions would be exceedingly simple, then," Umbra replied. "If you were to take the guise of slayers in draconic territory, the greatest risk to your disguises would likely be tree branches bending and breaking from the invisible bodies of the dragons. It would be prudent to keep any contact brief if you encountered others."

"Depending on his nature, Thlorian may choose to aid your kind in such an endeavor after Nihil has been destroyed," Umbra stated, tilting his head slightly. "Creatures of the Abyss will still remain dangerous, but he would have control over them. If he did not, then it would remain an extremely delicate task to accomplish. Considering how others may react to it, it would probably be best to do so in a well-secluded area if you chose to attempt such."

"Well as I said, I am confident in our ability to not only learn Nihils true name but also monitor the individual who is chosen to wield such power. Perhaps it would be better to discuss this at a later time however. If such a thing is attempted then it would be better to bring other relevant parties into the conversation. I am but one man after all. I hardly have the power to fund and maintain something like this." Matt said.

"Well there are a few things... let me see..." Matt began. He paused for a moment to collect his thoughts and then continued. "Well my people do place heavy emphasis on honour and duty. To act in a way that is considered dishonourable or to be lax in your duties is said to bring great shame upon yourself and your family. Outside of that... well we are a very pious people. We have our beliefs and we maintain them with vigour. Then there are more obvious attributes like our wrath towards non-humans and our firm belief in order above all else. Shall I continue?" Matt asked. "Now I can assure you that the ancesters of the founders of the Imperium were, at one point, slaves. It's not just Imperial records that confirm that but also records from non-humans who lived at the time. Our ancestors rebelled against their masters and won a costly victory. The generals who fought in the war became the nobility of what was then known as the Kingdom of Mankind and the leader of the rebellion became the King. Perhaps it was not like that for everyone but it was certainly that way for us. With us being the dominent power in Neuva well... it tends to cause our history to blend with the rest of the worlds to form some sort of false narrative."

"Right. I suspect that the mortal will probably be in hiding. After all, he is at risk of being killed by a stray bomb or by a radical on either side of the conflict. I highly doubt he will be anywhere near a dragon clan or human settlement. Unfortunately, that still gives him plenty of locations to hide in. As you said Animus, Umbra will likely be our best bet at finding him. As for the rest of you, I recommend letting me do most of the talking if we run into a patrol. If someone does try to talk to one of you then just use common sense. While talking to them, you hate non-humans with a burning passion and long to spill their blood. You love the Emperor and his family and hope that the Imperium reigns eternal. Keep that in mind and you'll likely get through any confrontations without drawing attention to yourselves." Matt said.

''That is all I can hope for at this point Umbra. But before even that we must first deal with Nihil. So as soon as we are able I suggest we get a move on to our destination. The longer we spend idle here the more time our enemy has to put into motion its plan.'' Rhen said to Umbra.

''If we do run into anything where we have to speak I would rather be a mute than say such things about other races. I would rather just leave the talking to you Matt as that is how you were raised. No offense.....but you would be more believable than me. Plus I cannot bring myself to say things about myself although in disguise. A Humanoid I may be but I am far from being human although the prospect of the human condition does peak my interest. As I recall....humans speak a variety of languages. Though the common tongue is most widely used I could speak in my native tongue and it could pass as a human foreign language. So I could simply say,'nice weather' and you could interpret it as,'Hail the Imperium' or something along those lines. I would rather do that that speak in the common tongue such things I would regret saying later. But the judgement of my use of the Watcher's tongue is up to you for this operation Matt.'' grunted Rhen slightly put off by the fact he might have to talk down about even his own people while in disguise.
