Life insurance? Those guys gave up on me years ago. I've gotta look out for myself nowadays.

And in the interest of conserving my health, I'm going to post the final chapter, as well as the epilogue. Enjoy. ^_^

“Why haven’t we found that sub yet!? " Chief Officer Smith raged.
“Well, sir, the process takes time…it’s under our radar, which makes it ten times harder to find. There’s always the possibility it was destroyed…”
“No. ZT is much too clever to be caught off-guard like that. Perhaps...Yes, of course!”
“What is it, sir?” Officer Nickelson asked, coming up behind him.
“He must have known we were coming after him! Only a fool would remain in something as bulky as a submarine if he knew he was being tracked down! He must have abandoned ship! I bet he’s out there right now, desperately trying to escape us.” Smith’s eyes gleamed. “Pilot,” he called, “take us down to the ocean floor. Nickelson and I are proceeding on foot.”
“We are, sir?” Nickelson questioned.
“Yes, Nickelson, we are.” He turned and called over one of the specialists. “Hey, get us into those suit thingies you were talking to me about earlier, would you?”
“Um, suit thingies?”
“Y’know, the high-tech scuba stuff you found in the back of the submarine.”
“Ah, of course. Right this way, sir.”
Nickelson sighed. 'Here we go again.'

“Sir, we’re receiving a radio transmission,” reported a crew member seated in front of the communications console. “It’s from Mr. Telmar.”
The captain nodded. “Ok, put him through.”
A rough, exhausted voice began emanating from speakers in the console. “Ahoy, captain. How goes it?” Zach asked.
“Stressful, Telmar. A few clicks away from your current position Mr. Jones’ second submarine has landed on the ocean floor.” As the captain said this, he walked over to the piloting console and glanced at the screen displaying the camera feed. "Two people have emerged and are heading in your direction. They appear to be armed, and we believe them to be hostile. Keep an eye out.”
“Thank you, captain. What are your coordinates?”

The captain told him latitude and longitude, then heard a soft curse from the other side of the line. He frowned. That couldn’t mean anything good.

“I need a rendezvous point a lot closer than that. One of my oxygen tanks has been incapacitated, and the other one will not sustain me long enough to reach your position.”

The captain’s frown deepened. “Hold on a moment.” He motioned to the communications officer to mute the connection momentarily before turning to the pilot. “Can you manage to get us out of here without that submarine picking us up?”
Now it was the pilot’s turn to frown. “I don’t know, sir. Once we power up all our systems, it makes it a lot easier for radars to pick us up. Unless..." The expression on his face visibly brightened. “Sir, I believe we have a jamming device with which we might be able to scramble their instruments long enough for us to pick up Mr. Telmar and get out of here.”
The captain nodded. “Do it.” He waved to the communications man and the connection resumed. “Alright, Telmar, we can meet you about two miles closer. Can you make it? "
" It will be close, but it should work.”
“Very well then. See you there, Telmar.”
“Likewise, captain.”

“What was that!?” he exclaimed as he entered the control room. He went directly to the piloting station. “Robby, what the heck happened?”
Robby had a worried look about him. “I’m sorry sir…I wasn’t concentrating and I think we scraped up against a rock.”
The captain grimaced. “What’s the damage?”
“You’re not going to like this.”
“Just give me the damage report, Robby.”
“Ah, we’re in pretty good shape…except…”
“Except what?”
“The jamming device, cap’n. It was knocked off.” At that moment, the green dot on the radar that signified the second submarine slowly began to move.
“It’s seen us, hasn’t it?”
“Yes, sir, I think it has.”
A groan escaped the captain’s lips. “Just…get to the rendezvous point. We’ll see what happens from there.”
“As you wish, captain.”

The oxygen meter for Zach’s final tank was getting dangerously low. The fact that he was panting with exertion wasn’t helping the matter. He gave a sigh of relief when he rounded the corner of a rock to see his submarine a mere thirty yards away, and closing. Something behind the submarine caught Zach’s eye.
'Oh, ****,' he thought. It was the other submarine, barely visible but closing fast. 'Go, go, go, go, go!' he willed himself, sprinting the final yards to his submarine. As he reached the side of it, he gratefully noted that the door to the flood room had already been open. He hastily clambered into it, and immediately the outer door began to close.
The depressurization seemed to take forever. But finally, the room was completely emptied of water. Gravity hit him, and he fell to his knees, surprised how different he felt. As he recovered from the shock, the inner door opened, and Morton rushed in and helped him up.

“The submarine…it’s right behind you!” Zach exclaimed once he had taken his helmet off. “We’ve got to get to the weapons.” Once all of Zach’s gear had been removed, he slipped into comfortable clothes and found a ladder that led up into the gun bubble. He strapped himself in and swiveled the turret to face the enemy submarine.
“There is no way you are getting out of here alive,” Zach promised, and clamped the trigger down tightly.
——————————
Morton arrived back in the control room without Zach at his side, much to the captain’s surprise.
“Where is Mr. Telmar?” he demanded. Just then, gunfire erupted directly above him. “And what is that?”
Morton simply looked at him.
“You’re kidding me, right? That man gets back from a 4 hour undersea journey, and within five minutes of returning, he’s in a gun turret blasting away at the enemy?”
“What can I say?” Morton said with a slight grin. “The guy is one heck of a trooper.”
The captain sighed in amazement and shook his head.
“So what do we do now?” Morton asked.
“Now...Now, we wait.”
——————————
The first few shots went awry. This didn’t perturb Zach, however; the distance was too much for him to expect to hit anything. Soon, however, the projectiles began to find their mark. The first one buried itself into very snub of the submarine. As the sub drew closer, it was a much easier target. His shots began to pepper the front of it until it looked hopelessly destroyed. He noticed movement in the gun turret; someone appeared to be trying to man it. He focused his attack on the bubble for a few seconds until it gave way. Unfortunately, the ship didn't flood.
