Jack was calmer now than ever, for he was in control. He had pushed the king into a state of anger. His emotions were Jack’s to play with, and, to him, the game had just begun. “Sir,” he started in a respectful tone. “If you would remove these wires, the buckets, and batteries I would be more than happy to tell you my plan.”
The Royal One took a deep breath, hesitantly considering Jack’s offer. Jack was armed from the teeth down with lethal weapons. Without the wires, what was stopping Jack from attacking him? But this was important, Jennifer was important, she would be worth the risk. The Royal One gestured to the batteries, and they both dunked into the buckets of water.
Sparks exploded from the buckets, electricity trailed up the wires, showering Jack in violently bright lights. But he felt no pain; he just closed his eyes away from the intensity of the lights. When he opened them, the lights were gone, and so were the buckets, wires, and batteries. All evidence of their existence, sparks, scorch marks, and smoke were all gone. Jack did*’t know what happened, but he assumed it was magic. Whatever he did*’t understand, he labeled it as magical.
Jack’s face lit up with a twisted grin, chuckling menacingly as he rose from the home-made electric chair. He approached the Royal One and placed a hand on the back of the king’s neck. The Royal One watched Jack’s face, merely inches away. Jack snapped his fingers, and a dagger jutted out of a band of metal wrapped around his wrist.
“Let me tell you my plan.”
It was then Valkyrie realized things would never be the same. From the tip of the tower of the Chapel of the Crater, Valkyrie watched as the citizens of Crater City shuffled around, searching for clues about Jennifer’s death. It was almost as if the death of the Royal Daughter instantly turned everyone into detectives.
