Abiel stepped in front of Serena, pulling out his staff and holding it toward the goblins. “Stop!” he commanded, waving the staff threateningly. “I do not wish to hurt you, but I will if you approach further!”

The horde paid no attention to Abiel’s threat, as they continued moving toward the tree where the two people stood in fear. Abiel jabbed at the attacking force with his staff, firing a jet of water at the goblins. The blast collided with the goblin in front, sending him tumbling over onto his back. The others stopped, eying Abiel with tense stares. Then, they turned to the goblin leader, who was standing behind them, watching.

The goblin leader slowly marched to the front of the formation. Abiel laughed, “Good luck! Goblins can** use magic, so you guys can’t get close to us!”

“You dare speak to us like that?” barked the leader, in eloquence that was unearthly coming from a goblin.

Abiel glanced back at Serena, puzzled by the goblin’s language. *I thought goblins were primitive?” he asked.

Serena shrugged. She had believed the same thing. Then, she saw the goblin moved and tried in vain to warn Abiel.

She was too late, for the goblin had taken full advantage of their confusion. He moved his arm forward, sending a blast of red magic streaking across the clearing toward Abiel. The boy turned his head back just in time to see the blast make contact with his chest. The attack threw him through the air, and he collided with the maple tree about ten feet high on the base. His body fell limply to the ground at the foot of the tree.

“Abiel!” Serena cried, kneeling by his fallen body.

The boy struggled to get to his feet. “I thought goblins couldn’t perform magic like that,” he groaned.

“Me too,” Serena said, confused. “It would appear that this goblin is a special breed.”

“Who are you?” demanded Abiel, as he teetered on unsure legs.

“I am a servant of General Redskull,” the creature replied. Then, with a wave of his hand, the ground at Abiel and Serena’s feet burst into flames. Abiel pushed Serena away, letting her fall to the ground several feet away. However, Abiel remained in place, and he was consumed by the goblin’s fire attack.

“Abiel!” screamed Serena, seeing his dark silhouette on the inside of the flames. The mass fell to the ground, writhing in pain as the fire ate away at his body.

“Destroy them,” the leader commanded, and the group of goblins resumed their attack, coming toward Serena with their weapons bared.

Serena backed against the mighty maple behind her, facing down a grisly death at the hands of these beasts. The one in the front of the formation reached her, ready to send his spear through her chest. Serena winced, preparing to withstand unspeakable pain.

Then, the goblin found himself on the end of a spear. A man leaped out from the brush surrounding the maple, impaling the goblin moments before it reached Serena. His force drove the goblin to the ground, killed instantly by the power and precision of the spear thrust. The man pulled the spear out of the carcass and waved it high, stopping the other goblins.

“Back, you beasts!” roared the man as he held out his spear. Serena finally overcame the shock of his appearance, so she examined her savior. He was tall and big, so imposing a figure that no goblin even thought of moving toward him. He wore a berserker helmet with brown hair underneath, and he was clad in armor made of yak hide and leather. Serena knew from first glance that this was a Fremennik warrior.

“Stand back, maiden,” he said loudly, with much bravado. “I shall save you from these foul creatures! I am Thoruk of Rellekka; retreat or die!”

The goblins glanced back at the leader, who stood impassively facing the newcomer. “Kill them,” he ordered, and they pushed ahead with their spears to engage Thoruk in battle.

The warrior grinned, tensing his body in anticipation. The first goblin thrust his spear at Thoruk, who sidestepped the attack and grabbed the spear. He ripped it away from the goblin with one quick pull, and he impaled the attacking goblin with the spear he had brought with him. He shoved the impaled goblin, who fell to the ground and died. Then, Thoruk hurled the spear he had just taken from the goblin like a javelin toward the attacking force. The projectile found its mark, burying itself into the chest of another goblin, hurling him backwards from the force of the throw.

Both spears used, Thoruk moved forward into the remaining two goblins with only his bare hands. The closest goblin was too slow in raising his spear, so Thoruk threw all his body weight into a tackle. The Fremennik easily took the goblin to the ground, crushing him beneath his weight. Then, Thoruk leaped quickly back to his feet and rushed the last goblin.

The final goblin raised his spear in a futile attempt to fend off the warrior. Thoruk feinted left, and the goblin swung the spear in response. Then, Thoruk pounced. He slipped in underneath the spear, raising his left arm to block the spear’s wooden handle. His right hand curled into a fist, and he swung it upward unhindered to the goblin’s jaw. He made perfect contact, and the goblin sprawled over on the ground, out cold.

Thoruk stood over the fallen squadron of goblins, looking menacingly at the leader, who stood watching the scene. The confident brown eyes of the Fremennik met the deep red of the goblin. “Leave this girl alone!” Thoruk demanded, pulling his spear out of the goblin’s corpse.

“Thoruk of Rellekka,” the goblin chuckled. “You, this boy, and this girl are now enemies of the great General Redskull. Leave this land and travel far away, or else you will surely die by our hands.”

Then, the goblin turned to walk away from the tree. As he disappeared from the clearing, his body burned away in a deep, red fire, leaving behind nothing but ashes where he stood.

Serena, realizing that the danger was gone, remembered Abiel lying by the tree. She looked back down at him, and she noticed that he was drenched. He got back up to his feet.

“Are you okay?” Serena asked. “Why are you wet?”

Abiel groaned. “I used my water magic to put out the fire,” he explained.

The Fremennik came over to Serena. “Are you hurt, my lady?” he asked.

Serena shook her head. “No, thanks to you I am fine.”

Thoruk gave a confident smile. “That is what I do. I am Thoruk of Rellekka, savior of those in danger by hideous beasts such as them!”

Serena bowed her head. “Thank you, Thoruk of Rellekka.”

“Yes, thank you!” piped in Abiel.

Thoruk nodded. “It was my pleasure.”

“Serena, do you think he’s the other one?” Abiel asked excitedly, and Serena remembered her vision.

“Yes, I believe so,” she replied with a smile.

Thoruk looked back at them with a quizzical look. “What are you talking about?” he asked.

“I was told that I would meet two people at this tree,” Serena explained, “and that I should travel with them.”

Thoruk nodded. “And you believe I am one of these two?”

“Yes,” she replied.

The Fremennik put his hands at his hips, proclaiming, “Well, I would be remiss to allow a beautiful young damsel such as yourself travel without protection! I will accompany you, and keep you safe!”

“Hey, I could protect her!” Abiel exclaimed, insulted.

Thoruk pretended to look around for the source of the voice, finally looking down at Abiel. “You?” he asked. “Who are you?”

“I am Abiel, grandson of Kaisen!”

“Tell me, Abiel, how can one so short protect Serena?”

Serena silently laughed. Abiel was hardly four feet tall, so the Fremennik's insult had a fair amount of bite to it. “What?” replied Abiel incredulously. “I am not short!”

“What was that? I can’t hear you from way up here!”

“Let me tell you something, Thoruk of Rellekka, I am very strong for my size!”

“Is that how you were able to get pounded so thoroughly by those goblins?”

“I was taken by surprise, that’s all!”

Serena silently watched the pair bicker beside her. She thought of Ihrbakka, and his promise that these two were the keys to her future. She suppressed a laugh as they fought like two siblings. This was going to be an interesting journey.

I have a few questions Riekan.

First - is the Ael in the Epilogue of The Empty Lord the same vampiress as the one in the Cursed Dragon?

Is the Immortal Skeleton in the Cursed Dragon Zharoun's brother?

Lord Musheka mentions that there are nine families of Fenkensrae. Later it is mentioned there are ten. Which is true?

Thanks guys! And wow, those are some good questions!

First, yes, it is the same Ael. She was very young in The Empty Lord, and old in The Cursed Dragon.

The second is also a yes, he was Zelthen, Zharoun's brother and the Zamorakan mage that actually cast the curse on the dragon egg.

And third, that was an oversight on my part. I'm not sure why I put nine, there are actually ten families (one for each member of the Decaphim).

Thanks for the questions! That makes me feel really good that someone made the connections. :)

P.S. I'm hard at work on more adds, so they'll be up in a few days!
