Thanks, guys, and I don't think there's much of a problem with the quest. If there is, I hope you all will still enjoy the story.

And Toby, I'll try to get him in the story. I'm toying with an idea, but no promises. ;)

More adds tomorrow!

-----------------------------------------

Fifty Years Before Present

---------------------------------------

The sea was quiet, as usual. The winds blew slightly, but that evening was no different than any other at the outset. The Fremminiks rarely sailed this far out, so the tiny island escaped notice for the most part. The orange sun shone brightly at that setting, the brightness mirroring the brightness of the world. It was almost an ominous light, for goodness such as this never lasts long in the world of mortals.

A gull flew through the night, landing on its perch outside the cave. The old man came out to greet the bird. "Ah, Thorus," he said with a smile. "What news do you bring?"

But the bird wasn't carrying the message. Instead, it spoke. "Well, Master," it replied. "Ihrba*ka sent a message."

"Ihrba*ka?" wondered the old man. "I thought he was back in Celestos... What did he say?"

"He said, 'Armadyl, the night has come.' He said you would know what that meant."

Armadyl nodded. "I do. Thank you, Thorus. That will do for now."

The bird nodded its head. "Right, Master Armadyl." Then, it took off and went out into the sea. Armadyl leaned against the mouth of his cave. So tonight was the night, huh? Armadyl remembered the night Ihrba*ka had come to him, deep in his Temple of Ikov, bearing this request. "Armadyl, you must go live on a particular island in the Northern Sea. There, someone will come. You must give them your staff."

"How will I know who they are?" Armadyl had asked.

"They will bring a strange unity before you. However, the unity will be paramount to the survival of the world."

Armadyl reflected on that conversation at the mouth of his cave. It had occurred seven hundred years before, and now finally his destiny was to take place. It could not happen at a better time, for Armadyl could feel the rumblings of war in Celestos. The gods were on the move, and they sought to bring the battle to Gielinor.

"So," Armadyl whispered to himself. "What is this unity?"

As the evening gave way into night, the calm sea disappeared. A storm had moved in, its massive gales of wind and water pounding the side of the mountain. Armadyl sat within, wondering how this night was special.

Then, he heard the call of one of his birds. He rose and went to the mouth of the cave to answer the alarm. Then, he saw a mass coming through the storm. It was a small boat; so small that it was a miracle that it was still afloat. The boat came to rest on the shore, and the two on it stumbled out onto the island. They pushed up through the wild wind and rain, carving their way through while focusing on the light of Armadyl's cave.

They looked like an odd pair. One was a fairly tall human, robes swishing in the storm and a magical staff in his hand. The other was much shorter; a dwarf, and she was running awkwardly. The human held her hand as they came.

At long last, the duo came splashing into the dry cave. It was just as Armadyl had spotted, except for one detail. The dwarf was pregnant.

"You two are a long way from civilization," Armadyl said, still assessing the situation.

Both were out of breath. "Please, sir," the mage panted. "The storm came out of nowhere. May we stay in your cave until it passes?"

Armadyl nodded. "I couldn't turn you two out there. Come on in."

They both sputtered their thanks, and then they followed Armadyl further in. Armadyl got them some warm tea, and they drank up, replenishing their strength.

"Who, may I ask, did I welcome into my home?" Armadyl asked, once the couple had settled down.

"I am Kaisen," the mage replied. "And this is my wife, Kalda. Who, may we ask, is our benefactor?"

"Just an old man," Armadyl replied. "An old man living alone in the middle of the sea." But inside, he was scrutinizing them further. Ihrba*ka had mentioned a strange union, and here it was... a human and a dwarf.

Kaisen took the hint. "We don't want to impose for long, only until the storm clears."

Armadyl nodded. "Since I've allowed you the best of my hospitality, would it be impertinent for me to ask a question?"

Kalda's shoulders fell. "I believe I know what you are going to ask."

"You get it a lot? I would figure so, it is an odd combination. And you two are having a baby?"

"I'm not the father," Kaisen replied, shying away from the subject.

Armadyl frowned. "I'm sorry. What happened to the father?"

"He has no father."

That made Armadyl perk up. "No father? Surely you must be joking. Remember, I'm an old man living in the middle of the ocean. Who will I tell? I'm not here to pass judgment on the two of you."

"We're telling the truth!" Kaisen replied. "No one can explain it, and most don't believe us. Kalda and I were in love, but one day she just conceived on her own. So I told her that I would be his father, and then we packed up and left to escape all the whispers."

But Armadyl was hardly listening to Kaisen's explanation of their plans. His mind was racing. There was no doubt about it; this was what Ihrba*ka had sent him here to see. Armadyl moved closer, examining Kalda's midriff. "May I?" he asked.

Kaisen looked suspicious, but Kalda nodded with a small smile. Armadyl placed his palm upon the bulge of her torso, and then he searched the soul inside. Armadyl opened his eyes, and he was in the center of a large void. Nothing was around him except a flowing sea of power. It left no physical trace, though, and it was like nothing was there besides what he could sense. Armadyl studied it further, and he noted that it was definitely not a mortal power.

"He's an Incarnation," Armadyl whispered in awe. "But I can't sense whose Incarnation he is."

Then, Armadyl left the unborn child's soul. He returned to the cave, where Kaisen and Kalda looked to him with interest. "I believe you," Armadyl replied. "And I trust you. There is no family better to raise him than you two."

Both looked back at him questioningly. "I have a gift for you," Armadyl replied. He went over to a small cupboard along the cave wall, and then he pulled out his Staff. It looked like a regular magician's staff, but it was far more powerful. This Staff was the Staff of legend.

"Please, take it and give it to your child when he comes of age," Armadyl said, handing the Staff to Kaisen. Kaisen looked confused, but as soon as he touched the Staff and felt the resonating power within, his eyes widened.

"This can't be," he said. "That means that...you're...?"

Armadyl waved his hand to stop him. "Yes, I am. And don't come looking for me again, for I won't be here. Raise your child well. I believe that the day will come when he will use my Staff for the good of the world."

Kaisen and Kalda were speechless. Clearly they did not expect this out of the old man; probably they still couldn’t believe that he believed them about the child’s origins. Armadyl finally pointed outside. "The sky is clear. Go, while you can."

And they were shaken from their stupor. They thanked Armadyl a hundred times before they finally left down the wet path to their boat. Armadyl watched them go, marveling at them. They loved each other, it was true, and Armadyl believed that the child was conceived as an Incarnation. The question was, which god had put him there? One thing was certain; this meant that Celestos was about to be rocked to its foundation. The gods were mobilizing for war.
