Chapter 6
Alex awoke as if from a deep sleep. He was lying on soft grass, covered by a blanket and a damp rag on his forehead. The sound of the creek was rather soothing.
He sat up, and from there he could see Elizabeth sitting beneath a tree and reading a book. Surprisingly, she was no longer wearing her short, red dress. Instead, she wore a long gown that was the most brilliant shade of light blue.
It took Alex until now to realize that they were nowhere near the spot they had been at earlier. Actually, the more he looked, the more he noticed where he was, the yard of the Gildred's manor. He could even see Rhody trimming the hedges a little ways away.
Alex, now more frightened and confused than he had been last night, leapt to his feet, "What the-?"
Elizabeth didn't even flinch or look in the direction of Alex and his erratic movement. "Sorry I'm not a better nurse. That's really Violet's job, but she told me to just let you lie, and I guess it really was your fault you fell out of that tree; you did climb up it, after all."
Her response didn't exactly help Alex's confusion. In a juvenile attempt to say something that made sense, he snapped at her, "What? Tree? I didn't fall out of a tree!"
Elizabeth smiled and looked up at him from her book. "Oh, you must be confused. It was a tree - a very big tree indeed. Violet said to let you be, but I really couldn't. You're my best assistant." She turned her attention back to her book.
"What's really going on here, Elizabeth?" Alex tried to sound tough. He wanted it to seem like he wasn't going to put up with her mind games. He knew what he saw. The only person in a tree was Elizabeth, and the only person who fell was the man she shot with her arrow.
