Chapter 14
When Rosie left the dress shop, clad in a new silk scarf and carrying a new dress, she was utterly distraught over the news of another murder.
"Another one?" she said. "A guard this time? Alex, we aren't safe anymore," she placed a hand over her mouth. "Oh, Alex. I feel sick."
Alex had assumed, of course it was obvious, that Elizabeth had committed the newest murder. When Rosie said that they weren't safe, did that mean she didn't believe Elizabeth did it, or she didn't feel safe around her? Alex frowned. Did Rosie ever know about their boss' little "hobby"? It didn't seem like the kind of knowledge Rosie could live with and keep secret.
"Rosie?"
"Yes?"
He asked, "Do you have any idea who might have done it?"
She looked at him, her confusion evident in her facial expression. "The paper said it was the Ardougne Assassin. I assume it's him."
Alex frowned. So Rosie didn't know. Now, he wondered who did. Obviously, Rhody knew about Elizabeth's "hobby", but whas he the only one? What about Lillian, Violet, and Charles? Certainly Elizabeth couldn't hide it from her own husband.
Could she?
"Excuse me, Mister?" Alex was tapped on the shoulder. He turned to see a young boy, ten or eleven, standing behind him. He wore tattered rags, coated with dirt. His face was stained with grime. Even though the boy was young, his chapped lips and faded blue eyes gave him an aura of worry and pain. The street was no place for a little boy to live. "Mister, can you spare a gold peice or two? I wanna buy some bread from the store, here. I ain't eaten in a long time. My tummy hurts a bit."
