Chapter 9
Logan passed through the gates as if in a trance, and then, all of a sudden, he was out. Out of Varrock! Finally! He gazed left and right, taking in the scenery. He realized with dismay that it was not much different to Varrock itself. The houses were slightly more spaced out, but it was obvious that they people were just people of Varrock seeking cheaper houses. ‘At least it doesn’t stink’ he thought.
The houses gradually changed as they walked. At first the houses started to have small gardens, then lush lawns, and finally fields, rolling away as far as the eye could see. Logan was amazed. So much green! A huge field of cabbages grew nearby. Logan had never liked cabbages, but now he had an intense urge to rip one out of the brown dirt and eat it raw. The only thing that stopped him was the fear of an angry farmer chasing after his with a pitchfork, like in the stories he’d read as a child.
Aura, on the other hand, seemed only mildly interested. He glanced left or right occasionally, but most of the time stared straight at the road ahead. They did*’t speak much, which suited Logan fine. He was happy to silently admire the passing countryside.

The fields of vegetables soon turned into fields of cows and sheep. Thousands and thousands of the animals were scattered about, as far as the eye could see, each one quietly grazing on the grassy fields. Logan couldn’t figure out how there was enough grass for the animals, or how they could continuously eat the same thing all day. A few of them raised their heads and snorted, but otherwise they completely ignored him.
The roads slowly deteriorated as the travelled, so eventually then were walking in sloppy mud. The reeking smell of sewage had been replaced by the stench of animal ******, and the baking hot sun had attracted flies to the piles of it. Already Logan was starting to dislike the outdoors. The roadside draining had converted into just ditches, which too were full of not human waste but animal waste. ‘At least it beats sewage’ he told himself silently.

Three days later and Logan was seriously reconsidering his decision. His legs ached from hours of walking, and his back ached horribly. The peaceful animals had been replaced by a deep forest the previous day, and the path became just a mat of leaves that had been mashed by human and oxen traffic. One of the positives was the huge pine trees blocked out the sun, leaving them in a cool darkness.
Another thing that frustrated him was that Aura kept quiet. They were passing so few travellers now that he had to hum just to keep himself sane. Aura seemed not to care; he was probably used to it.

Logan had many questions for Aura. How did he obtain the hat? Which hat owners were evil, and which were good? Where were they going? Eventually, he asked the last one.
“To make alliances.” he replied, simply.
“With who, the people of Draynor? How is that going to help us?’ he replied, with a questioning raise of his eyebrow.
“With other hat owners, you dimwit!” Aura said, without looking at Logan. “Drazel is still no match for any higher hat owners, as I’m no match for him.”
Logan guessed Drazel was the owner of the green hat.
Aura suddenly stopped and grabbed at what Logan guessed to be an insect that was flying close to his neck.
“What a stroke of luck!” he said. “Good thing I caught it.*
It wasn't an insect. It was an arrow.
