~Death on the River Lum~

He emerged from his house yawning and stretching his sleep-stiffened muscles. Blinking rapidly at the intensity of the early morning sun, he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and yawned again. If he didn't know better he would have thought the sun was always that bright around here - even in the middle of the night. But of course, that was impossible.

Unsure of what events the day might hold, Adnihsor, the hero of this tale, packed his bag carefully. It never hurts to be prepared. Carefully he placed inside his leather satchel a length of sturdy rope, a sharpened knife, an axe, some smooth powerful stones of magic, and some dry tinder. On top of these things, so they wouldn't be crushed, he added two loaves of warm bread and a freshly baked apple pie, courtesy of his mother. Adventuring often made him hungry.

Lastly, he armed himself with his best sword and shield; thieves and muggers operated in these parts, preying on the unwary. Setting out in a vaguely easterly direction Adnihsor hummed as he strolled along. It didn't matter where he was going; he was just enjoying a walk on a lovely sunny day, and maybe have an adventure or two if he happened upon them.

Sitting on the edge of the riverbank our young adventurer paused to feed the ducks some breadcrumbs. The sky darkened. "How curious," Adnihsor said to the ducks, "I knew it couldn't possibly be always sunny." He threw another handful of breadcrumbs to the ducks before he smelled it. It was rank, whatever it was, stinking of garbage and rotting fish, and it was standing uncomfortably close behind him.

The same moment he turned his head to look for the source of the foul odour, he realized the sky had not actually darkened - it was just the shadow of the creature that was standing over him. He didn't even have a chance to defend himself from the first blow to his head. "Oww!" he shouted, standing up and spinning around to face his attacker in one swift motion.

The monster before him was slightly smaller than himself in stature, but bent nearly double. His pale green flesh was covered in masses of warts, from which the putrid stench eminated. Adnihsor attacked blindly with a flurry of slashes, some not so well aimed. He'd had fighting lessons of course, but fear and anger had made him forget them all. His only thought was to defend himself from this foul-smelling villain.

A couple more blows hit their mark and the beast lurched forward and collapsed in a heap. He'd killed it! He was elated, but he had gotten badly hurt in the fight himself, so he quickly ate his mother's apple pie. Feeling a bit better, Adnihsor closed his bag and slung it onto his back, deciding he'd had enough adventure for the day. Before he had taken a step though, another monster was standing in his path. Apparently it had a grudge against him for killing his friend, for it attacked also.

Adnihsor killed the second one too, he felt himself grow stronger and had an easier time slaying it. Another followed the second, and another after that. He had eaten all his food and was struggling badly to keep from losing consciousness. 'I don't think I'm going to make it out of this one alive,' he thought, just before the end came.
