My latest short story - I just wrote it tonight and havent made any revisions.
~Victory~
Perspiration beaded on his forehead which was furrowed in concentration. Raising his arm to wipe off the sweat he paused. His father's voice was inside his head, intoning the same warning he had heard day after day while the warlord had been alive, "Never show your enemy even a hint of nervousness. Display any weakness and the battle is already lost."
Hesitating, Liefang considered his options. What would be a greater risk of showing weakness, leaving the glistening moisture on his brow to likely be spotted by the enemy, or drawing attention to the fact that he was sweating by wiping it off. Deciding that the former was the safest option, he returned his hand to his side and forced his mind to return to the action at hand.
Liefang had been training for this moment his entire life. He could not risk anything short of a clear, undisputed victory. So many people were counting on him; most importantly, his King was counting on him. It was not enough to merely defend against his opponents advances. No, he had to take up the offensive, he had to do it now, and he had to stay at least three steps ahead of the enemy if he was going to win.
Time was running out. Drawing on thoughts of his wife and baby daughter for inspiration, the lanky man closed his eyes and prayed for clarity. Opening them again Liefang spotted the chance he was looking for. Huzzaing inside he kept his face expressionless and made his move with the steady, methodical movements with which he did all things. The trap was set. Victory was sweet. He could taste it already.
The subsequent action played out just as he had predicted it would. Lulling the enemy into a false sense of security was working like a charm. 'Like giving candy to a baby,' Liefang laughed to himself. By the time he revealed his plan of action it was too late for his poor opponent to do anything to prevent it.
