Not sure what the Black Powder addition is, but what I meant is, the whole same-y idea of taking over settlements, building financial structures, recruit armies, defeat enemy armies, win, take over some more settlements, change tax-rate to prevent revolt, build more financial structures, defeat some more enemy armies, recruit some more armies...
Sea battles are nice to play and watch. In fact, I hated land battles in Empire Total War so much that I automatically auto-resolve all of it but I try to play all my sea battles. On Easy Level I can field a fleet of about 10 Heavy First Rates and 4 First Rates, making this fleet completely unstoppable and enough to take on 4 - 5 enemy fleets in a row without any losses.
Don't know much about Shogun. I heard they shrunk the scope of the game in order to deliver a more narrative and story-based experience. But after so many Total Wars and playing each of them feels so much like the rest I have played, I kinda lost faith.
I did a research and I do think Hearts of Iron 3 is available for Mac. It only is worth your time if you buy all the two expansion packs though, as organising (ahem) German panzer regiments into divisions into corps into armies into army groups etc can take up a lot of time, particularly without the first expansion pack.
Basically it is set in World War 2 where you can take over any nation in the world from 1936 - 1946. So for example if you want to play Mexico in 1943 and start your campaign by declaring war on the USA, I suppose that is theoretically possible but will not lead to a desirable outcome.
Basically the world is split into 3 factions and they have to get a certain amount of victory points (by holding important provinces, of which there are 10,000s in the whole world map) before the end of 1946. This is done by warfare, research, organisation of production, politics etc. Too much to cramp in one post.
