I'm so truly grateful for my friends. For it was as I lay there, unconscious and bleeding on the streets that Lily had emerged from her house and found me there. I lie here in Varrock Hospital (A.K.A. the top floor of the chapel) thanks to Lily's efforts. If she had not been there I don't know what could have happened.

"You okay?" She asks me immediately as I stir from my sleep. I notice, as I sit up that I'm the only patient in the 'hospital' accompanied only by one doctor and Lily.

"I'm fine." I say, feeling the back of my head only to find it dry. The horrible feelings and pain I experienced in the streets have gone and apart from an extreme amount of tiredness I feel healthy.

Lily explained how she came across me, lying and bleeding and rushed for help. She told me how they doctors carried me away, the Varrock Guard then arriving to usher her away and investigate the scene.

"What'd they find?" I ask. Lily stares at me blankly.

"They were actually hoping you could tell them!" She exclaimed. "They found no evidence that someone had attacked you close up or had assaulted you from a distance."

"How long have I been out?" I ask sleepily. Lily shifts uncomfortably in her stool beside me.

"Fifteen hours, I've been counting myself." She responded, indicating she never left my side.

I lie my head back down on the pillow in silence. Lily understands this as me wanting to be left alone to sleep so she stands and bids me goodbye. The doctor approaches me and describes how I have suffered a head wound and bleeding from my ears. I should be able to leave soon. Nothing too serious.

Save perhaps, madness, though I'm the one passing that judgement.

~Chapter X~

I hear rustling downstairs. Then the padding of someone's feet. Silence.

Thump.

I start shaking violently again. My heartbeat increases and I'm panting like mad.

Thump. Thok.

I reach for my scythe that leans lazily against the wall beside me. Then stop.

"What am I doing?!" I say to myself. "This is just another nightmare!"

Yet something in my head tells me it isn't. A silent voice, speaking of danger. I ask the voice what to do.

It responds soundlessly but loudly. I can't hear it physically but It sounds regardless.

"Stay where you are." It says. "Don't be afraid."

The voice is calming, soothing. I feel as though I can trust it.

SPLURTCH. SHRREEEPP!

My breathing stops. That sounded distinctly like someone being gutted. But I stay calm and don't panic or look for my scythe. All is then quiet. Peaceful.

"AAARRRGGHHH!!!"

An unfamiliar and quite real voice screams. The scream is followed up by a cry of torment. Then the splatter of blood. I wriggle underneath my blankets and start to pray.

"Please Guthix...Please don't let me die..."

Silence. Then a strange, yet familiar noise. A curious whistling sound...But underneath my cool, safe sheets I feel no need to find out what it is.

The sound continues then stops. I feel as though another presence is in the room. Then another, by my side. This one whispers to me as it had before.

"Don't be afraid."

I lower the sheets.

Large, blood stained fangs open wide and engulf me whole.

My eyes snap open but I remain calm, aware that it was nothing but another nightmare. But whereas the last nightmares posed odd questions this one presented more.

Who or what was that voice?

What was the sound?

What creature has horrifying teeth like that of the creature in my dreams?

I notice the room is still dark, but not a night time dark.

A sinister, malevolent dark.

I turn and peer out the window. It's raining again, harder this time and I suddenly realise that I failed to notice the water hammering away at the roof before.

Feeling healthy and awake, I step out of my bed onto the cold wooden floor, taking my scythe in hand along the way. Then something from my nightmare returns. The scream of the person being murdered.

It was my doctors.

I race across the floor after putting my shoes on and hurry down the stairs.

"Good morning Noah, did you sleep well?" The doctor asks as I hit the bottom of the stairway. I sigh stupidly.

"Yes sir, thank you."

"I was actually just coming up to tell you that you could leave but I guess you figured that out yourself."

He gestured at the door. I bid him farewell but not before asking the time.

"Roughly seven or eight in the morning." He proclaimed, not having a clock anywhere handy.

I thank him and leave, into the soaking wet streets of Varrock. While I stand there I'm instantly aware of something being wrong.

I can hear people talking urgently somewhere nearby so I go to investigate. Momentarily, I arrive at the east bank. People are crowding around it speaking quickly and quietly.

At the front of the crowd, Xavier stands stands facing them, his back to the closed door of the bank.

"Everyone please calm down!" He roars. "There's nothing to see here please use the other bank!"

I force my way through the crowd and am caught by Xavier's eye. He ushers me forward & takes me aside.

"Feeling better?" He asks in his quietest tone possible. "Sorry I couldn't come see you, I was busy."

I stifle a laugh and gesture at the crowd. He nods.

"So much for a day off!" He booms.

"What happened here while I was out?" I ask quietly. The crowd behind me is beginning to break and wander off so there is little chance of being heard.

"Come and see." He says morbidly, wrapping a strand of hair around his finger.

Surrounded by Varrock Guards and lying face down on the floor in a mess of blood and gore is one of the many bankers. He's been literally cleaved in two, horizontally through his midriff.

I hear the weeping of the bankers coworkers and friends, standing behind the booths afraid and upset.

"He was killed last night, on a lone shift." Xavier explains, a fistful of hair in his grasp being ruffled and twirled. I don't want to know the details (yet I believe I may already know them) however I know Xavier is going to tell me anyway.

"No one broke in. The doors were locked and the windows sealed."

Lying in bed at home, listening to the rain falling outside. Trying to take in all that has happened. The murders, the nightmares, the attack in the streets, the voice...

There's a knock on my door: Lily. I get up and approach the door feeling confused, wanting someone to talk to. I open the door.

Despite everything Lily is in a good mood as usual. Though today there is reason to it.

"Hi Noah!" She exclaims as I open the door.

I force a weak smile and reply with a "Hi."

She starts to shy away, as if she thought I'd forgotten something and was embarrassed to remind me.

"Happy Birthday." I say, smile broadening.

"Thank you!" She yelled happily, jumping off the ground as I said it. I recall once, years ago how I'd forgotten her birthday, upsetting Lily and causing her to make sure I'd never forget again.

Nine years later, it worked.

"Well...um...dinner at my place again....at six!" she explained enthusiastically. "See you there!"

With that she ran-No, skipped away down the street, evidently pleased I had remembered.

My smile stayed for now I had something else to think about. For now, I could forget the nightmare that constantly shadowed me these past days.

Now I could relax.

I hope.

~Chapter XI~

It's still pouring with rain outside. The sound is somewhat relaxing. Heck, the though that I'm inside in my house, dry and warm whilst other people are out and about getting soaking wet is soothing in itself.

A little mean, but it makes me feel comfortable.

Remembering that it is still early morning, I decide that all in all I want another sleep. I lie back down on my bed, listening to the rain and silently drift into a sleep.

I awake to silence. The rain has stopped from the sounds of it. As I hop out of my bed I realise I didn't have a nightmare. Who would have thought?

I go towards the kitchen, to check the time on the clock. I'm two steps out of my room when I feel something wrong again. The same feeling I experienced before I was attacked on the streets not long ago.

I instantly go back to my bedroom, my scythe very quickly finding itself in my hand. I scour the room, lashing out at anything that moved destroying a small portion of my wall as I did.

The feeling passes not much later. I then notice that the whole time I've been awake that my house has been dark as if it were night. I venture into the kitchen, nervous and confused to check the time.

Eleven o' twelve. I've been asleep for only a few hours. The rain stopped before I woke up, so why is it so dark?

But then more and more thoughts come to me. This is the kind of darkness I'd expect late at night whereas the darkness of the rain was grey and natural.

Something was wrong.

My next immediate move is the window. Maybe my clock has broken and it is in fact night, maybe it is still raining but softer this time, maybe someone has covered my windows as a joke.

But no, it's none of these things. As I look out the window I come to learn a horrifying truth.

My house, the streets of Varrock, hell the whole of Varrock itself:

Is covered in a thick black fog.

I'm breathing deeply, scythe gripped firmly in my hands.

"What is going on..." I breathe to myself.

I'm instantly afraid, not sure what to make of the fog. I'm alone in my house with an unnatural phenomena that is supposedly from my nightmares lurking outside.

A memory kicks in. The day I was returning from Draynor and saw a black fog much like the one outside drifting towards Varrock. Was this it? If so what does it mean? What-

There's a knock at my door.

"Who is it?" I call, thinking it to be Lily or Xavier come to make sure I was okay. Instead I receive silence.

"Who's there?"

The silence continues. Then my door is knocked on again. Then again, harder and faster, as if they're trying to break in.

I back up towards my bedroom, shivering madly. Upon entering my room, facing my front door I see something that makes my blood freeze.

Some of the black fog starts seeping in through the cracks in my front door. I back away, slamming my bedroom door as I move. I hear the strange whistling noise I'd been hearing over the past days as the fog crept into my living room.

Then it ceases and there is silence.

Standing at the back of my bedroom clutching my scythe I try to unlock my window for a quick means of escape. Suddenly I hear breathing. Harsh, deep, quick breathing coming from outside my door.

I start fumbling, trying to open the lock and eventually, terrified and impatient, I take up my scythe and slash clean through the cheap lock. I kick open my window and jump out as I hear the whistling start again and run for it.

I'm fleeing blindly, with the fog I have absolutely no idea where I am going. Eventually, I hit something hard and building-like. I instantly start searching for the door and upon finding it hastily open it.

If I never considered myself lucky before I could now for the house I had broken into was Lily's. Lily had been sitting on her living room chair having a drink of milk and was staring at me open mouthed.

"Noah? Wha-"

"Lily! Have you looked outside?" I asked urgently.

She got up, mug of milk still in hand and took a glance outside.

"Ooh, I hadn't noticed. With all the torches and all..."

Despite the darkness outside, Lily's house shone with the various lighting equipment intricately decorated around her house.

"Noah," She asked, turning her gaze to me. "What's wrong?"

And so I begun explaining what had just happened in my house, along with what had happened in Draynor a few days ago. As always, Lily listened intently and only spoke when I finished.

"So, what do you think it was?" She questioned as I finished.

"I don't..." I stop and think of my nightmares. Could they be linked to what's happening? Lily decides to elaborate before I do.

"Do you think it has something to do with your nightmares?"

"That sounds almost impossible...But..."

"It would make sense. I mean, it got into your house without opening anything didn't it?"

"But it was fog! How could fog possibly hurt anyone?!" I exclaimed, unknowingly adding my thoughts on whether or not this was the same creature that was murdering the citizens of Varrock.

"You said it knocked on your door and was breathing loudly"

"It did! That's why it's so confusing!"

A scream from outside puts our conversation on hold. Outside I can see nothing, just like before. Before I have time to say anything, Lily has left the room and is fetching her weaponry. She returns, sword in hand and knives strapped to her belt.

"Let's go find out."

The story gets a bit more violent from here. Read at your own discretion.

Very few members of the Runescape community take up more than one style of combat. Those big & strong usually prefer melee. The swift and hawk-eyed adept to using range. Those with a higher degree of intelligence and maybe being a little on the skinny side choose magic.

Lily however, is proficient in not just one or two but all three forms of combat, though slightly less so in melee and range. Xavier is unmatched by anybody I know of with a sword & his magic skills are decent to say the least. However his range skills are laughable.

Myself, am solely good at melee, my range skills not much better than Xavier's and my magic non-existant.

So as the two of us step outside into the darkness of the Varrock streets it is Lily who is able to pierce the shadows with light shining from an immense flame, conjured and held in the palm of her hand.

The scream we heard earlier has stopped and everyone but us are in their homes, sheltering from the mysteriously deadly fog.

"Do you think this is a good idea?" I ask quietly, trying not to let my fear show (which is easier for me than Lily, I can hear her teeth chattering.)

"Someone's in trouble and so far we're the only ones brave enough to help," She huffs. "We can't sit in our homes and hope this is all a bad dream soon to pass, for all we know there's something dangerous out here."

We hear another scream ring out from somewhere to our left. Lily directs her flame towards the source of the noise and we find ourselves looking at the road to the main street.

Lily ushers me along, sword in her left hand and flame in her right. I have my scythe resting on my shoulder, the blade facing upwards in case I need to strike quickly.

As we approach, we hear the scream again but closer this time. We look and find the Blue Moon Inn obscuring our view

"Do you think they're in there?" Lily whispers, a slight tremble in her voice. I reply calmly, though inside I feel absolutely terrified along with feeling like I shouldn't be doing this and if I choose to proceed it will be the end of me. With one single word, I seal my fate.

"Yes."

With one long stride, we stand at the door to the inn. As Lily has both her hands full, that leaves me the task of opening the door. Hands shaking mildly, I open the door.

The first thing I'm aware of is the darkness. Lily quenches her flame as we step in, for it is unnecessary. While the first floor of the inn is not as dark as outside and sight is still possible, it is still too dark to properly examine anything.

But I don't need to be able to. I can still make out everything that happened and the result of it.

I then notice how everywhere around the room is splattered with blood along with the tables and chairs having been smashed to pieces. There are holes in the floor where something heavy has been thrown (or stepped on.)

Finally, I notice the corpses. There had been roughly five of them, now in more than ten pieces. One is right next to me, head cracked open and stomach torn out. Another is impaled on a chair through the chest and has her face shredded, eyes hanging out of their sockets.

There's a couple, the male seeming to have tried defending his lover only to have been used as a club to pummel the two of them at once. They now lie together, their bones evidently broken and sticking out in some places.

Lily gasps and falls to the floor. I can hear her crying. I steel myself, trying not to break down as she has and kneel beside her.

"Who could...What could...Why...?" She stutters between tears.

"Easy..." I say calmingly, wrapping my arms around her. I've seen things like this before, in animals I have needed to fend off. Animals I've seen in the wild, fighting and clawing at each other to the death. In my opinion, it doesn't look much different in humans.

Xavier has probably seen far worse than I have. He's had to kill people, criminals and such that won't go down with a fight. So not only has he seen violence such as this, but dealt it.

But Lily is a sweet little schoolgirl. Apart from combat training, she has never been anywhere close to the amount of blood and guts strewn across the room we now stood in. She didn't need this.

None of us did.

"Lily, we should go." I say softly, helping her up. She's still weeping quietly, but still has the strength to stand.

"But...What about whoever is still inside...?"

"it's...Probably too-"

A loud scream, (a mans) cuts me off. Lily and I both reach the same understanding that their is at least still somebody alive in this forsaken inn.

"Do you really think we should investigate this?" I ask, gesturing at the befouled human corpses littered around the room. Despite her terror, Lily nods and takes up her sword, her free hand resting on her belt of knives. She's clearly not going to leave someone in danger, whatever the cost.

So we step past the bloodied corpses and ascend the stairway to the rooms above.

The top floor is darker than below and Lily is required to light a small fire. There are six doors in a hallway, four are closed. One is wide open and has bloodstains all over the front, a severed hand lying close by it.

The other door is ajar, a thin crack open in the doorway. We tiptoe towards it, passing the open door. Lily wisely decides not to stop and look. I peer in and find the remains of two people on the floor.

One is missing their arm, which is lying in the hallway as I saw before. There legs have been ripped off and one is shoved through their abdomen. Their head is split in two. The other person is lying face down, their back ripped open and insides fed on. Bones stick out jaggedly in random places. I gruesomely note how their legs were then bent back to be stuck on the bones.

I leave and approach the other door, preparing for the horrors inside.
