Xavier drops to the ground, eyes wide and surprisingly, a slight quiver to his body. The fog has the city surrounded once more, the sky an impenetrable veil of black, the only light is a shaky flame from Lily's hands.

"How could I be so blind...?" Xavier mumbles. "This isn't fair...It..."

Something roars monstrously from the darkness behind us. Lily gasps and turns her head in agonising fear towards the source of the cry. I scowl and pull Xavier up, wondering furiously what had happened to the courageous man who never lost his focus that was Xavier.

Then I saw his eyes. They looked normal, but had a certain malicious glint to them.

The shine of a man who knew there was nothing left to do but fight to the death. Be it his or his opponents.

"For the people..." He breathed, his mouth twisting into a savage snarl. He stood, taking his Dragon Two Hander up with him. He stared long and hard into the abyss behind us and saw what he was looking for.

The Fog locked gazes with him, realising his intent & wanting evermore for him to throw his life away to it.

"FOR THE PEOPLE!!" Xavier booms, his voice stifling a hideous guttural noise from The Fog.

The sound of a ravenously hungry beast.

"XAVIER!! Don't...!" I bellow, trying desperately to do anything to stop my dear friend and standing in his path. But I'm knocked out of the way, Xavier's tremendous strength bowling me over so that he may reach his target. Lily just stands still, frozen to the spot, mouth slightly agape, unable to comprehend why anyone would do this.

As Lily stands there, totally helpless and I struggle to get back up to my feet, fighting back a wave of tears, Xavier turns. Two enormous green eyes glow behind him, illuminating his features.

Most importantly his smile.

He grins happily, like he would have done at Lily's party as she blew out the candle and took the first slice. He opens his mouth & speaks.

"May you find your way out. Goodbye, my friends."

He turns back. We run.

The Fog roars.

~Chapter XXII~

We jump fences, round corners and go through houses. All the time, Lily weeps. Before long, she breaks down completely. We stop at a house somewhere in the slums, the stench of the dead mixed with that of the filth infested streets causes me to gag with disgust but seems to have no effect on Lily.

She is too emotionally destroyed to feel anything physically.

She lay in the ruined house, curled into a ball in the corner of the room. As she lies, I stand in the corner of the room and watch over her in the dim light of a recently lit candle, hoping she would recover.

But how could she? She'd witnessed the massacre of an entire city on her birthday, almost died multiple times herself and then watched as one of her dearest friends ran off to his death. She would be needing some help.

I stand still and silent for a full two hours after which Lily's crying has reduced to hushed sobbing. I approach the frail girl and sit beside her.

"Lily...Do you want to talk?" I ask.

She replies with a weak "Uh huh" and sits up. Her eyes are red and wet, her cheeks are predictably stained with tears and her teeth chatter violently. For a while nothing is said. We just sit and stare, waiting for something to break the silence.

In the end, it's me that speaks. After a lot of thought as to what I'm to say, I finally let it out.

"His death will not be in vain. I promise you Lily, we will get out of here."

A tear falls from her right eye and splashes on the musty, wooden floor.

"But ho-"

"It doesn't matter. We will." I reply, my voice strong and confident. No tear has fallen from my eyes and no sound of sorrow has escaped my lips for I know that there is truth in what I say.

Lily looks into my eyes, her face a look of absolute terror, like a child lost in a crowd.

"So...What do we do...?" Her voice quavers but holds a hint of strength in her tone.

A voice, otherworldly and unknown whispers to me. It tells me what to do. It tells me what's going to happen next.

"We wait." I declare and take up my scythe.

"What are-"

The voice continues to speak, blocking off the rest of Lily's sentence. It tells me I'll need to fight. Tells me that it's coming.

Then it tells me I'm a fool and we'll all die.

I smile aware of the Fog's presence in my head. I know it's coming.

And I know I'm going to respond to it.

"Listen up!" I roar aloud, startling Lily into jumping back into the wall. "I know it's you, I know you're coming!"

"Noah...What are-?"

"You've desecrated this entire town...Slaughtered men, murdered women and children! But I vow if it is the last thing I do, no matter how powerful you are..."

I swing my scythe into the air and bring it back down of the door of the house, cleaving it open. A strange feeling of calm washes over me.

"I promise. I will destroy you."

Silence falls upon the room, Lily is backed up against the back wall of the room with her hands to her mouth.

"Noah, what's going on?!" She almost screams at me, confused. I turn and face her.

"Grab your sword, it's coming."

Lily's eyes widen in fear.

"W-What!?"

"Do it! We're going to fight it!"

"Have you gone mad?!" She shrieks, fresh tears erupting from her eyes. I face her, eyes locked on hers. She hesitantly takes up her sword.

"It can be killed and I know how."

"How?"

My eyes stay on hers, a single tear falls from my face.

"I can't say."

Lily is about to ask more, but stops. The ground trembles slightly. Lily's mouth opens and a single, soft gasp leaves her throat. I turn my eyes out the wrecked door and peer into the darkness of the streets. A furious howl breaks out from somewhere nearby.

It's here.

And it will die.

I chuckle softly, a thin smile creeping across my face.

"For Xavier."

A pair of green eyes fill my view.

~Chapter XXIII~

It comes in as a truly terrifying creature. It's human in shape and form, but far from being anything close to a mortal person. It's bald, black skinned and teethed however not the black of the Karamjian Natives but the black of the deep night. It has no lips or jaw, it's teeth merely jut out messily from the hole where the mouth should be. As per usual, in place of human eyes it has a pair of green orbs.

But it's body is truly the most horrific sight. The Fog, instead of possessing a single human corpse has attempted to take control of several with disgusting results. It has three arms, two on the left side and one coming out of it's shoulder. The fingernails of the arms have sharpened themselves to that of a keen knife and could easily rip my gut to shreds.

It has four legs in a square like formation, the toenails having grown and sharpened much like the fingers.

The foulest abomination of all lies in the waist and abdomen. A pair of heads hang limply from the area, drooling blood and moaning eerily. One looks up and reveals that it has no lower face but instead has four huge blades for teeth sticking crudely from below the nose.

The chest has been split open and a pulsating cloud of fog sits inside it. But whereas the corpse Xavier and I fought had been devoid of blood and organs this manifestation of the fog had plenty.

Inside the chest, barely visible in the cloud of fog, are hearts. Human hearts torn from the living chests of the citizens of Varrock and then gruesomely collected by The Fog for it to feed on.

I step back, taking up my position beside Lily. Her sword is shaking wildly in her hand as The Fog begins it's approach.

"Lily." I whisper gently into her ear so that The Fog doesn't hear. "Do as I say, alright?"

She nods subtlety.

"When I give the word, set fire to it's chest and the hearts inside, understand?"

She nods again.

The Fog is almost upon us when I look up. Large and menacing, it would take a nerve of steel to look

unflinchingly at it. I stare at the eyes of The Fog for what seems to be hours when in truth it is hardly seconds.

"I will kill it." I mutter. "It will die. No matter what."

Suddenly The Fog strikes, swing both of the arms on the left side of it's body towards us. My reactions are faster than Lily's and I easily block the blow with my scythe. Lily takes advantage of this and hacks downwards with her blade in an attempt to severe an arm or two.

The Fog's reacts faster than I did and pulls it's arm back in a blur of movement. The arm on it's shoulder then comes down at a blindingly fast speed, towards Lily's skull. I quickly spin my scythe in a circle in front of her before the arm can touch her.

Slice!

The arm goes right into the windmill-like blade, the runite metal easily cutting through the decaying flesh of the arm. It stops in midair and flops to the ground, black blood oozing out of the severed joint.

Lily jumps up and roars the spell for casting crumble undead, her arm shooting out in front of her aimed right at The Fog's front left leg. A trio of energy waves burst from her open palm & collide with the leg, incinerating it almost instantly.

The Fog screams, yet despite losing a leg and an arm does not falter. It swings it's arms towards us again. Lily dives to the floor to avoid the attack but is then propelled back to the wall by The Fog's back left foot. She slams into the wall hard & drops to the floor in a daze. Hastily, I jump in front of her and attempt to ram the incoming monster with the but(t) of my scythe.

It stops, but my scythe is caught in the mouth of one of the secondary heads by The Fog's waist. It tries to jerk it free of my hand but Lily is back up and has thrown a rune knife into the eye of the head.

It lets go and I attempt to step back so that I may have more space to attack but The Fog moves it's left arms and grabs each of my arms.

It's grip is crushingly powerful, my muscles instantly lose their strength and my scythe falls.

Lily rushes to my aid, a knife is already through the air and heading straight for The Fog's face. But it's too fast and moves it's head slightly to the left to dodge the lethal projectile. The Fog then lashes out with it's foot again and this time hits Lily in the stomach as opposed to the chest where she was hit before.

The breath is knocked out of her as she crashes against the wall again. Her sword clangs loudly on the ground before she too lands face first onto the floor.

Eyes vacant and temporarily unable to breathe, she drifts into unconsciousness.

Without warning, The Fog hurls me into the side of the room. My crash isn't as severe as Lily's but it is enough to faze me. For a few moment I feel like I can't stand.

I don't get to find out whether I can or no.

The Fog has rushed over to me and clutched my neck. It begins to lift me off the ground, crushing my windpipe in the process. I struggle madly, trying to kick it in the stomach and pull it's arms off me but it's far too strong for me to get it off. My view begins to darken, I try to scream to Lily for her to wake up but all that comes out is a hoarse, choking sound.

Then suddenly the choking stops and I drop to the floor. I cough violently and look to see what had happened.

One of The Fog's arms land on the floor and it steps back a fraction, howling madly.

Standing before me, crimson blade held firmly in his hands is Xavier. He turns around and I'm able to see what happened.

The left side of his face has been torn at and is leaking blood. He's lost his left eye and there's a chunk of his left arm ripped off. All of his armour has been shattered and destroyed and he now wears his civilian clothing.

He then looks at me with his remaining eye and says proudly "I ain't dead yet."

I laugh crazily, uncaring of what happens next. Knowing that if Xavier can survive fighting The Fog twice that we can all survive it a third time.

"Wake her up will you?" I say, gesturing towards Lily.

Xavier moves quickly, darting around the left side of The Fog where it is missing a leg. It turns and growls at him but cannot do anything without any free limbs to attack. Xavier quickly rouses Lily into awakening but shaking her gently. As her eyes opened they filled with glee upon the sight of the grinning face looking down on her.

"Xavier!" She cries happily. "You're still alive!"

The Fog howls again, breaking her attention away from Xavier. All three of us are instantly alert and focus on the monstrosity before us. Suddenly it spins and jumps towards the seated figures of Lily and Xavier.

I hurry to strike back and defend them, charging forward with my scythe swinging before me. But realise that's exactly what The Fog wanted. It had only shown the front of it's body during the fight and I'd failed to realise that there was a fourth arm protruding from the back of The Fog. I try to stop but the floor has become slippery from the black blood of The Fog and I slide straight into it's grip.

It has latched onto my face, nails digging into the side of my head drawing blood. I slash wildly with my weapon and successfully land a blow on The Fog's leg. The head of the scythe sticks into the rotting flesh but to my horror when I try to wrench the blade free it has stuck. New flesh has grown over where the scythe had struck and in turn, welded the blade to it's flesh.

I'm aware of The Fog turning around and Lily screaming for Xavier to do something. One of the heads on The Fog's waist suddenly dig their knife-like teeth into my right hand. I roar with pain, but this only excites the head and causes it to dig deeper, moaning hungrily with every cry of pain.

I muster enough strength and rip my hand away, only to lose my index finger and thumb to the beast. Blood gushes from my wounded hand onto the head where it happily gulps it down.
