"Shut up...Shut up!" I roar out loud at the once soothing voice."

"Noah, please calm down!" Xavier yells in response, despite me not speaking to him.

"Don't be afraid. Soon all will die." The voice continues. "Soon this world will be forever encased in death and darkness."

"NO!" I howl, wriggling violently beneath Xavier's grip and not really knowing what I'm saying. "NO I WON'T LET YOU!!"

I hear Xavier grunting from the effort needed to keep me down. Then without warning, I lash out with my foot and kick Xavier in the back of the head. He growls and releases his grip allow me to jump to my feet and knock him off.

The voice turns sinister and it's laughter quite physically fills my bleeding eardrums. I throw my hands to my head, the pain reaches new levels of torture, feeling like I'd rather die than endure this.

"Get out of my head...Get out...Get out of my head...GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!"

Then there's silence.

I open my eyes, the blood has stopped flowing and I'm able to see. I move my hands from my head and look at them. As I expected, they're caked with blood as is my forearm.

I fall to my knees and almost fall flat on my face but stop myself with my arms. I'm shuddering deeply, arms struggling to keep themselves up with each violent shake.

I catch sight of Lily peering out from under the table and Xavier returning to his feet. Then my vision begins to cloud, not with blood but darkness.

"Noah...Noah are you alright...?" Xavier asks, his voice sounding like he was somewhere far away.

"Noah...Noah?!"

The darkness takes me.

~Chapter XIX~

Lily and Xavier are gone when I wake, as are their weapons. My scythe still lies lazily against the corner of the room.

I get up groggily, my head pounding and unable to hear anything properly. I thwack my ear with my hand in an attempt to clear it.

I succeed, blood gushes out and onto the floor from my ear. I can then hear properly.

I wish I couldn't.

I can hear shrill screams echoing throughout the halls outside. The screams of a girl in total fear.

Lily.

I hurriedly take up my scythe and burst through the door of the room and find to my horror a trail of blood. It starts in a puddle outside the door which I realise I'm standing in and then leads to a room three doors down.

I tiptoe cautiously through the corridor, my blood soaked shoes squeaking ominously with every step, the sound of the screaming girl assaulting my eardrums.

There are no other sounds.

I pass the first door, it's as it should be. Locked and undisturbed.

I pass the second door. The same as the first, closed and undamaged. But upon looking beneath the door I spot something that makes me quiver with fear.

Blood. Seeping out from under the door, slowly drifting towards my feet. I waste no time, forgetting the fact that there is a screaming girl in the room next door and burst through the door of yew wood.

Inside, pinned to the wall and with his own swords pierced through two places in his abdomen is Xavier. His blood pours out like a hideous waterfall from the two wounds in his stomach.

His eyes have been quite gruesomely torn out, his legs have been severed and lie on the floor in an X shape.

"NO!" I roar and then recall the screaming. It's now louder than before.

"LILY!!"

I sprint out the door, scythe in hand and instantly smash the next door to pieces.

On the floor, wriggling back towards the wall parallel to the to the door with sword in a wounded right hand is Lily.

Towering above her is a thick, black, cloud of fog.

Lily's left arm hangs uselessly at her side, a jagged, red gas\-\ running along it, pumping blood out onto the floor. Her legs have cuts criss-crossing through each other all over, her normally pale and smooth legs now red and scarred horrifically.

The Fog moves closer and Lily takes a slash with her longsword, only to have it slice through it as if it were water.

She screams one last time as I see The Fog begin to move. It swirls around into a ball of fog, then expands again but before I can see what it's doing the door behind me closes with a gust of wind and I turn to see what has done it.

When I turn back, Lily's head is lying on the floor, her body following soon after. Her body lands with a sickening thud, her neck leaking blood onto the floor around her head.

"NO!!" I roar and then gaze at the monstrosity that has wreaked so much horror into my life.

A blade-like arm comes down at me instead, my reflexes making me jump back. Instinctively, I take a swipe at the creature, eyes shut with fear.

When I open them, The Fog has assumed it's natural, invunlerable state. It glares at me with two, hateful, red eyes. The soundless voices fills my head again.

"There is nothing you can do. You are doomed. All of you are doomed to suffer the same fate as these two have."

Part of my mind registers the voice to be that of The Fog. Who else could be talking?

"NO! Go away! What are you doing this for?!"

In response, The Fog drifts closer, growing in size as it does. I shake madly, backing away from The Fog but only to hit the locked door behind me. The I catch sight of Lily's headless corpse and the memory of Xavier's impaled body comes to mind simultaneously.

Suddenly, I feel anger.

"I HATE YOU!" I roar and wildy swing at The Fog with my scythe, slashing and spinning in an insane fury trying desperately to kill that which has killed my friends.

But it does no good. It comes closer and closer, constantly expanding in size until eventually, it is upon me.

"It is futile." The voice in my head, the voice of The Fog sounds.

The suddenly The Fog forms into a small ball again. A seemingly harmless ball. Then it bursts out, shaping into a thin, narrow cylinder of fog.

The Fog moves at blinding speed towards me and I scream with terror.

The Fog goes straight into my mouth.

I gag and choke, feeling as though I've taken much too large a bite of food. I drop my scythe and clutch my hands at my throat. I feel something moving down my throat, seemingly headed for my chest.

The lump arrives and I find myself on the brink of asphyxiation. Then there's an extreme pain in my heart, as though someone has driven a blade through it. I roar with pain and drop to my knees, my chest shuddering outward as though something is trying to break out.

Then, as I suspected, something covered in blood and guts breaks free of my chest, carrying my heart with it. My blood bursts wildly, as if a chinchompa had detonated in my chest.

For a few brief seconds, I look down to examine the damage while I'm still able to live. Something small has burst through my chest and made off with my heart and left all the blood to spray out for a few seconds.

Then, no longer able to pump blood to keep my life sustained, I fall to the ground.

~Chapter XX~

I can hear voices around me. Soft, hushed voices speaking frantically and worriedly.

I notice that I'm lying down on a bed, the blankets have been thrown off in what seems to have been a fit of terror. I sit up.

"Noah, you're okay!" Exclaims one of the voices upon my movement. Whilst my head is still buzzing with confusion I manage to work out that it's Lily doing the talking. I look around and see her standing above my bed, a warm smile stretching across her face.

Xavier is towering before the door of the room, sword in hand and his gaze now fixed on me.

"What happened...?" I ask drearily, rubbing my head in an attempt to rid it of the pain that cursed it upon my awakening. Lily shakes her head and Xavier switches his attention back to the door.

"We're not sure," She says. "You experienced sudden internal bleeding and immense amounts of pain and then just dropped unconcious."

"While you were out, you started convulsing violently in your sleep," Xavier says, his back still turned to me. "You muttered strange things and made quite a mess of the bed."

I hop out of the bed, confused, my head still in agonising pain.

Then I remember the nightmare. I remember Lily and Xavier's corpses. I remember it speaking to me...

I remember it's vow to murder us all.

I hastily decide to rid the thoughts from my head, do anything to stop them haunting my brain but all is in vain.

I know the nightmares will follow me to the ends of time.

"Noah, do you have any idea what we should do now?" Lily asks.

I look from him to Lily, then back to him, my two best friends. Alive and breathing now, dead and slaughtered in my dreams, dreams that seem to depict the future.

I can't bear to lose them.

"I know what it means," I declare.

"We have to get out of here."

"And how do you suggest we do that?" Xavier asks. "It's got the entire city sealed, we have no means of escape and even if we did manage to get out what then?"

"It's going to kill everyone Xavier and we can't stop it, we have to get out of here somehow! There must be a way!" I roar in response.

Xavier blinks uncertainly at my anger then asks me a question, pure comforting calm in his tone.

"Noah, what happened while you were out cold?"

I stifle a gasp, unsure of how Xavier knew something had happened and was troubling me. The nightmares flash through my mind, now and always scarring my thoughts. I whimper softly, unsure of what to say next and the thought of my two best friends butchered before my eyes circling through my head.

"The Fog...It spoke to me..." I gasp, struggling to get the words out. "It wants to kill...It WILL kill...And you..."

I topple over, bashing my head upon the floor with Lily and Xavier instantly rushing to get me up. I swat them away and stand up myself, steeling myself for what I'm about to say.

"I saw you two both dead, before my eyes. And then I..." I struggle greatly, as hard as the last part was I dreaded to get the final portion of the dream out of my mouth.

"I died."

******************************************************************************

Lily reacted badly to my portent of doom. For the rest of the night, as we tried to sleep, she tossed and thrashed in her slumber and awoke several times gasping for breath and crying quietly, falling asleep again after a couple of minutes.

Xavier slept soundly, unfazed and strong, even now in our absolutely dire situation. How I wish I had his courage.

I didn't sleep. I lay on the floor all night, staring at the inky blackness of the room, wondering how this ever happened. I lit a candle, slowly walked towards the window and peered out into the fog infested, darkness of Varrock.

Unless The Fog was stopped, the light of day would never shine on Varrock again.

I somehow found myself waking up, wondering how I had fallen asleep in the first place. I lay down in the corner of the room, a burnt out candle in my hand, molten wax having dripped and then dried onto the wooden floors.

I look around the room and see that Lily is lying on the bed, blankets drawn over her slim frame and her arms draped around her chest to keep her warms. Xavier is sitting in a chair at the side of the room, head bowed and eyes shut in deep sleep.

I then suddenly realise that I've been able to stare at my sleeping friends and take note of minor details. In the darkness of a fog shrouded town I shouldn't be able to see anything.

But I can, for the dim light of dawn is shining through the window.

~Chapter XXI~

I hurriedly wake Lily and Xavier and they instantly notice a change. I gesture towards the window and they both rush over, happiness scrawled all over Lily's face.

On Xavier's, however, is doubt and uncertainty. I, like Lily, had been ecstatic about the light returning but upon noticing Xavier's expression, I frown doubtfully.

"Does this mean it's gone?!" Lily shrieks excitedly, her attention turned out the window. She turns, the first smile she's had in a long while diminishing as she sees our faces.

"What's wrong?"

"Doesn't it seem odd that just after countless innocents are slaughtered and many more with death threats made to them, we're suddenly freed of the chaos and bloodshed?" I explain before Xavier can.

"Y-you think it's a...Trick?" Lily stammers, tears welling up into her eyes.

"It seems far too good to be true. I say-"

"NO!" She roars. "No, I want it to be over!"

I'm about to respond, but Lily swiftly leaps across the room and makes for the door, only to have Xavier grab her by the arm and pull her roughly down to the floor.

"Xavier not so hard!" I yell furiously at his sudden act of violence.

"Hush Noah." He responds quietly. Lily is struggling down on the floor, held in place by Xavier and screaming sadly with all the strength of her lungs. Her eyes are awash with tears.

"Let me go!" She wails. "It's over! Let me go back...!"

"Lily...Stand up." Xavier orders. Lily has stopped crying, her eyes red and watery.

"Look out the window."

Lily obeys and casts her gaze over the town centre. All looks normal, the fountain is trickling water at a steady rate and the trees sway slowly as a gust of wind flutters by.

But one thing is different.

Littered around the entire town, hidden in obscure places are corpses. Gutted, shredded and utterly mutilated corpses. Xavier points to one in particular, one I failed to notice when I first looked out the window.

In place of it's eyeballs are two, pale green orbs.

The eyes of The Fog.

The corpse is close to the fountain, face up and organs gruesomely hanging above it on the fountain. Blood splashes drench the area, the entire abdomen of the body split vertically open through the middle. Inside is nothing but shattered bones and a pool of blood.

"No..." Lily whimpers, falling to her knees. "No...Why...?"

"This isn't over Lily." Xavier says, clasping a hand on her shoulder. "And as long as it isn't, we need you to be strong."

She looks up to him, then to me as I step over to her. She bows her head for and stays silent for a full three minutes. Then speaks, softly, voice quavering madly.

"Yesterday was my birthday. We were going to have a nice dinner at my place...cake and all...then there'd be presents and games...we'd all be happy..."

She's about to break, her body shivers and she sniffles loudly. I extend a hand down to her.

"I promise you Lily," I say as she grasps my hand. "We will get through this and when we do, we can have your party."

She smiles. She returns from the brink of depression and desperation, newfound hope flaring to life in her eyes. As she stands, she looks at the two of us and speaks.

"Thank you."

Xavier and I smile in return and despite all that has happened, we have hope in our hearts that we can survive.

But the nightmare isn't over yet.

Xavier strides to the front of the room and looks intently at us.

"So, how do we get out of here?"

I contemplate the situation, a thousand thoughts running through my head. An idea sparks and I turn to Lily, who is closest to the window.

"Is The Fog still blocking off the city gates?" I ask. She turns and peers out the window and surveys the outside world.

"The Fog is gone, but..." She gulps.

"What?"

"There's a pile of...The dead stacked in front of them."

"We'll have to be quick then, we'll sneak around the back of the castle and make our way towards the northern gate out into the Wilderness. There's bound to be less corpses up there."

"That plan will do." Xavier says. "We've no telling what The Fog could be planning, we'd best move."

Lily nods in agreement, shaking her head furtively, eager to leave. I take up my scythe and gesture for the others to do that same. Quietly, we file out of the room and into the palace.

We sneak out the back door, studying every corpse we come across in the dull twilight of the morning, hoping to the Gods of Runescape that they aren't possessed.

We reach the stretch of road that passes the Museum of Varrock and The Chapel. There's a single body lying face down outside the museum, the window above them cracked and red with blood. scattered around them is a multitude of shredded internals and a grisly pool of blood.

Apart from the corpse, we're alone.

We begin our cautious walk, heading quietly for The Wilderness, one of the strangest places to find sanctuary.

Then I hear something. A quick sound, as if something moved extraordinarily fast. I spin, scythe being thrust in front of me, ready to defend from any attackers.

There's nothing.

"Noah, what is it?" Lily asks, her voice trembling with worry.

"I thought I heard something..." I mutter, putting my scythe back in it's strap on my back.

"A gust of wind!" Xavier barks. "We must hurry forward."

We pass The Chapel, the body of the dead reverend lies impaled on the altar, the symbol of Saradromin through his head and chest carved open. His heart and lungs hang ominously out, looking like a collection of deflated balloons on strings.

I turn away at the sight, wishing ever more that I could leave this horrible nightmare behind.

We reach the gate and find it surprisingly empty. Devoid of anything to hinder our passage.

"Hurry!" Xavier says and we break into a run...

...Just as the light of the sun is quenched and a barrier of fog surrounds the city. Our sight leaves and all that can be seen is black. Still running, we slam into the wall of fog and fall backwards.

The nightmare continues.
