He held a strangely shaped crossbow, and was covered in a thick, leather-studded armor. Due to its apparent age, Kashan could only assume that it was one of the famed armor sets that he had heard of from Timier.

The other man appeared to be elfish, about the same age and height. He had brown hair that was tied in a ponytail, though it bore a small hint of green. His eyes were a deep, grass green, sparkling like two well-cut emeralds. He was wearing a green tunic with sectioned dark green metal plates, which had bright green leather covering every exposed joint. He held an emerald studded silver bow, which was engraved everywhere with intricate, flowing runes. In a sheath around his waist, he bore a noble silver bladed longsword with a lime green hilt.

The two let fly another barrage, striking the same points on the man repeatedly. Though he tried to stand up to it, there were just too many projectiles.

The man standing let out an agonizing, unnatural scream sending everyone present to their knees. Only Kashan stood tall, immune to such distractions.

The man tried to use the opportunity to try to throw the fireball at Kaiser, only to be met with a blood-red scimitar in his chest. Finally he could take no more, and he exploded. A thousand moths rose up, making their way out of the village square.

Chapter 6 - New companions

*What the hell was that!? And who were these guys that shot the man… wolf… whatever.” Kashan asked Timier when he, and most others, were back on their feet.

“I don’t kn–” he started, but was cut off before he could finish the sentence.

“It was a Tau’de Kyra.” Two voices spoke at once, each voice melding with the other’s. The owner of one was Kaiser, but the other came from behind them.

They turned around and saw Emrys walking towards them.

He had aged very little since they met him thirty two years ago, he appeared to be now around thirty years old, still with the bandages over his eyes.

“Emrys!” Kashan said in a surprised tone, while Timier cast a healing spell on Kaiser’s slashed arm.

“Yes, it’s me. You should come to my house; it’s safer to talk there,” he said, gesturing for Kashan, Kaiser, and Timier to follow. Arya came with them. Even though no invitation had been offered, yet no one said anything about it either.

When they were seated in his house, Kashan asked again, “Who, or what, was that? And who were those guys that shot at him… it?”

“I believe we can help you with the latter.” A voice said, though its owner was nowhere to be seen. All of a sudden, two men walked in from the next room.

“I am Rhys,” the man on the left said formally. “And I am Ushae,” the other man said, inclining his head.

“Who are you guys? And what are you doing here?” Kashan asked, not going to quit asking until he got some answers.

“We were watching the ranging competition, of course. And as for whom we are, I believe we have already answered your question,” Ushae said, as if nothing was more obvious.

Kashan gave up trying to get any answers from them, and instead turned to Emrys. “Who, or what, was that thing?”

“That was Krown, the Shape-shifter. He is a high ranking general in Zamorak’s army,” Emrys replied.

“Ok, now we know WHO that was, but WHAT is he? What is a ‘Tau’de Kyra’ as I heard you say earlier?” Kashan asked.

“‘Tau’de Kyra’ is the title a person receives when they possess the Staff of Morphing,”
Emrys said, smiling when he saw Kashan open his mouth yet again. “The Staff of Morphing is a powerful staff made out of witchwood by Zamorak himself, to aid his followers in the first Saradominis* Balancer. It gives its wielder the power to change form at will. Size, shape, color, strength, speed, he can have it all; simply depending on what his form is. In addition, it also enables him to “feel” a Balancer, much as I ‘feel’ what I see and hear. That is how he knew Kaiser here wasn’t a Balancer: he didn’t feel right.

“Zamorak traditionally gave this staff to his most trusted general, though throughout the ages many others have possessed it. There is no killing a Tau’de Kyra; he will simply regenerate in a different form. You must either destroy his staff, or take it away, though that may prove challenging. If you are successful in that, he will turn into what he originally was, before he claimed the staff. Then you can kill him.” Emrys finished his explanations with a sigh.

“Witchwood? What strange material is that, I’ve never heard of it,” Kashan asked curiously.

“Not many people have. It has been extinct since the god wars, and even then, it was very rare.”

“Ok, now we’re getting somewhere. However, I still have two questions for you, Emrys. The first, why aren’t you older? The last time I saw you were thirty-two years ago, and you were twenty-five then; so that makes you fifty-seven. The second, what are you doing here in Edgeville?”

Arya’s mouth fell at that information, and she appeared to be doing some serious calculations while Emrys answered.

“When you disappeared, I had to take Timier, and the others, back. They were in no state to defend themselves in the Wilderness. When I came here, I fell in love with the place; I couldn’t leave.

So I bought a house, and have stayed here ever since. About your second question, I’m half elf, you know. Elves don’t age like humans. Now, I’m only half-elf, an elf wouldn’t appear to have aged at all, but half is enough to thwart aging pretty well.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, that doesn’t make sense! You can’t be any older than twenty, at the most! And you are no elf!” Arya nearly shouted, pointing at Kashan.

“He’s a Balancer,” Timier answered for him.

“A Balancer?” Kaiser asked before Arya could, his voice calm and deep.

So Timier repeated to Kaiser and Arya everything about Balancers he had explained to Kashan.

“So the balance has shifted? How? And how do we fix it?” Arya asked when he had finished his explanations.

“We? There’s no we, Timier and I are going to handle this ourselves,” Kashan said hurriedly.

“No, you’re not. I’m coming with you; you need someone with…” she took a deep breath. “…a woman’s intuition.” she said smoothly. “Plus I can’t miss this chance to go on an adventure; I'm fed up with this small village anyways.” She waved dismissively in the general direction of the village square.

“I’m coming too,” Kaiser said, as calm as ever, now looking down at the table.

“Again, no, you’re not.” Kashan said stubbornly.

“That thing killed my parents only a few days ago, and I have to get revenge,” he said, as he looked up, looking directly into Kashan’s eyes.

Kashan snorted. “Fine! But you two better not get in our way, or its straight back here,” he said in an ordering tone of voice. “Uh, where do we start, by the way?” he added, looking at Timier.

“Hah! First he says we can’t come, and then he doesn’t even know where it is we’re supposed to go!” Arya laughed.

It was Emrys that answered him. “I believe that Varrock would be a good place to start. When you get there, speak to the gypsy near the town square. She may be a little crazy, but she knows more than most.”

Chapter 7 – (find a new name)

Kashan and Timier got to sleep at Emrys’ house, and after much debating with Arya they finally got her to sleep in her own small home. The night was relatively peaceful after the long and tiring day, and Kashan slept soundly.

Kashan woke before the sun was even up, yet strangely, he was fully rested and fresh for a new day.

“Must be one of those special ‘powers’ for Balancers,” he thought as he went into the kitchen. After a quick breakfast, he started to plan the route they would take.

They could go through the Edgeville dungeon, but that would be tough with all the skeletons and hobgoblins. They could also go east; entering the city from the north, but that would take the longest of all the routes he could think of, and take them close the Wilderness.

There was also the possibility of going south, to the Barbarian Village, and take the route east from there. That would be the shortest and safest route they could take. They could even be in Varrock by noon with that route.

He decided to go through Barbarian village, as it would take them an hour and a half to go there, and then they could rest in the bar for a while before continuing to Varrock. Once they were there, the group could decide what to do next.

When the clock hit six, Arya was the only one ready, besides Kashan, so they had plenty of time to chat around before Timier and Kaiser came.

Kashan learned that she had always wanted to be an archer, and that she had won the ranging competition every year since she was twelve, except for yesterday. She was a little angry that all the other years the rewards were something like hundred steel arrows, the best being her hand-carved yew longbow.

Her parents hadn’t liked her spending most of her free time shooting a target in the backyard, or the rare skeleton that got too close to Edgeville, but were still always proud of her when she won the competition, especially against much older and more experienced archers.

He also learned that she had always wanted to get out of Edgeville, on an adventure, and grabbed the chance that was Kashan as soon as it came. She told him about some of the new things that had been discovered, and although he knew of most of them from Timier, he just listened; he loved hearing her voice.

Suddenly he felt guilty, as if he was betraying Krystal, and looked away.

“I’m sorry. I know you really loved her.” She said, as if she was reading his mind.

He didn’t reply, and for a while, they just sat there, silently.

Kaiser came, packed and ready, at seven o’clock, and Timier came down shortly after that. Kashan filled them in about going through the Barbarian Village, and got full support, so together they walked on south, out of Edgeville.

End of Chapter 7.

Chapter 8 - A bar fight.

The trip to Barbarian Village was uneventful, giving them plenty of time to enjoy the environment, and to chat to each other. Kaiser remained mostly silent, though, dead determination the only thing in his look.

After several hours of walking, they reached Barbarian Village.

“We rest here for a while, and then we continue to Varrock.* Kashan informed them.
They stepped into the tavern, and were immediately met with a great deal of shouts, and the foul odor of sweat and alcohol.

They made their way to the bar, and all ordered a beer. On a stool next to Kashan there sat a dwarf with very broad shoulders. He looked to be around forty-five years of age, exactly four feet tall, with long, thick brown hair, and a rather long, braided beard in a matching color. His eyes were as brown as his hair and beard, and in a sheath on his back there was a larger-than-normal greataxe, honed to razor perfection with two deadly edges. Along the metal shaft, which was another thing that made it stand out, there were runes. The runes were ancient and dwarven. They read: ‘Eyðileggjarinn Orodring, flýðu þetta vopn og þú munt lifa. Kannski.’

He was wearing a strong looking plate body, made of runite, a medium helm of the same metal, and a plated fauld, made from runite as well. He noticed Kashan eyeing his axe, and started talking to him, slurring his words as if drunk.

“She’s a beauty, ain’t she?” His voice was very deep, even for a dwarf. “This is Orodring the Demolisher. Those runes you see here, I put them in myself, just like everything else on this ax; I made it. These runes are probably the truest words I’ve ever written. ‘Orodring the Demolisher, flee this blade and you will live. Perhaps,’ he translated for Kashan.

"The name’s Toin, by the way,” the dwarf added.

They fell deep in conversation about everything between the sky and the earth; so deep, they didn’t notice that every single man and women in the tavern turned towards Kashan and his friends. A strange, hooded figure bowed over a table in the corner seemed completely unaffected by this.

“Kashan, look out!” Arya shouted as a barbarian raised his axe to slash at Kashan, and was forced to heed her own advice as another went after her. Kashan had reacted before she had even spoken; twirling around and raising his claws before even he knew what was going on. He knew as soon as he saw the bar.

Every single barbarian, man and woman, was going for them, and the stranger in the corner was mumbling something to himself. It was every man and woman for themselves, the barbarians were too many for ranging, and even Timier was forced to get into some melee action.

“A battle? I’m coming!” Toin roared as jumped into the fight, swinging his ax wildly, which oddly began to make a sizzling sound, as if hot metal had been dipped in water. Then, strangely enough, the axe head was engulfed by red flames.

“Arya! Stay with me! Timier, stay with Kaiser and Toin, you guys stick together!” Kashan shouted as he stabbed a barbarian in the gut. He made his way to Arya, who had drawn a steel shortsword and was desperately fending off attacks. Kashan, Kaiser and Toin fought like wild beasts, slashing and stabbing their opponents. Timier had no extra weapon like Arya, but seemed to be handling himself okay with his staff, just as long as they didn’t overcrowd him.

After fighting for a minute, the barbarians were becoming scarcer, but there were still enough to keep them completely occupied. Suddenly a barbarian hit his target: Kaiser. He slashed at his right shoulder, almost taking the arm completely off; it barely hung on a small bit of flesh, meat and muscle. Kaiser screamed in agony, and the stranger bared a toothy smile underneath his hood.

The barbarian raised his axe to finish him off, but before he could, Kaiser managed to stab his instep, and even though his right arm was now almost completely off, he was able to stand up and stab into the barbarian’s head. While he was unleashing his scimitar again, a barbarian came up behind him, and slashed him into his back, making Kaiser fall to the floor in pain for the second time in less than 30 seconds. This one, however, never got the chance to raise his axe; he received another blade in the back himself, this one going through his clothes and deep inside his body, leaving a large **** that appeared to be melting the skin closest to it. He screamed in pain, along with Kaiser, until Toin finished him off, slashing into his head.

Kaiser, now with his arm nearly off, and a big **** on his back that the black dragonhide barely managed to repel, was hardly able to move. Yet he found the strength to throw his sword towards Timier, the razor sharp blade cutting through three of the barbarians attacking him, before Kaiser went limp with blood loss.

Timier and Toin, who were closest to him, both went to him immediately, defending him from the barbarians that wanted the easy pray. Toin’s fighting style was, remarkably, very graceful. He slashed high and low, every once in a while jabbing his axe forward, lighting enemies on fire and opening up their bodies, all in one continuous motion. He never stopped to withdraw his ax, just continued with the same blow. He was almost dancing around, twirling his ax around like a whirlwind, raining death to any barbarian that he found.

Kashan and Arya were fighting as if they shared a mind, both knew what the other one was doing and acted accordingly. On Arya’s left, a barbarian roared and brutally swung his axe. She ducked, and Kashan slashed him in the face while Arya jabbed him in the gut. They both yanked their weapons out, and twirled around, back in back, looking for their next opponent. And they saw them.
