And they saw them. In the corner, the last six barbarians had cornered Toin and Timier, while one of them was standing over Kaiser’s body, raising his axe.

Kashan jumped to the barbarian as if he had been shot out of cannon and met him with bone breaking force.

“Nú er ***! Orodring klárar þetta!” Toin suddenly said in dwarven, slashing his ax down, into the ground. When the ax met ground, a large circle of fire emanated from it, frying each of the barbarians around them. And then he passed out, falling down with a loud thud.

The stranger cursed loudly, alerting Kashan and the others of his presence.

“I guess I’ll have to finish you myself!” he shouted, revealing himself.

It was Roan.

Chapter 9 - The battle with Roan

“Roan? But…but you haven’t aged at all!” Kashan said in shock, his brain had stopped working when Roan took off his hood.

Roan looked exactly like he had thirty-two years ago, except that he had upgraded all his armor from steel to rune, and his battleaxe to dragon. His plate body held a symbol in the chest, but Kashan didn’t see it; he was too occupied with his face. The others had all gathered behind Kashan, except Timier, who was sitting next to Kaiser, chanting some healing spells.

“Yes, Lord Zamorak has been kind to me,” Roan replied, looking at his hands as if he could see his face in them.

“LORD Zamorak? But…but you’re not Zamorakian…?” Kashan was in shock.

*Kashan, I can’t heal him completely, the wounds are too deep. We need to get him to a doctor,” Timier interrupted before Roan could respond.

“Ahh, yes, young Kaiser Strongbow. His parents certainly have been quite the nuisance to Lord Zamorak recently. It’s a good thing Krown finally found them.” Roan was stalling, trying to keep Kashan from taking Kaiser to a doctor.

“Kashan, we need to leave!” Timier urged Kashan, who didn’t appear to know what to do.

“Let’s just kill him and be done with it.” Toin suggested weakly, but Kashan snapped at him.

“No!” then added, more calmly, “You can’t kill him. Not yet. I have questions for him; questions he needs to answer.” He sounded very calm, given the fact that his friend was dying on the floor beside him, and his childhood friend was standing in front of him, threatening to kill him.

“You may ask your questions, friend,” Roan said as he raised his battleaxe. “If you can speak during battle!” With this, he gave a powerful roar, and ran towards Kashan.

The blow was aimed at his head, blade angled diagonally to slash it off his shoulders. Kashan managed to dodge and walk back a little towards a wall.

Toin raised his ax, and was about to jump at Roan, when Arya grabbed his shoulder, hindering him from attacking.

“No, this is his fight, not ours. We can’t help him,” she said with understanding. Toin grunted, but lowered his ax.

Roan made another slice at Kashan’s head, barely missing him as Kashan ducked under, and he lodged his battleaxe deep into the wall, the blade all but gone to the other side. He easily yanked it back.

“Such strength…something is not right here,” Kashan thought as Roan made another blow that would have taken his head clean off.

Timier was now watching the fight instead of Kaiser, as there was nothing he could do for him right now. The blows of Roan’s axe were flying all around Kashan. Roan relaxed his flurry for a split second, but resumed with even more power and speed then before. Kashan was hard pressed to keep up; Roan’s speed was greater than anything he had yet to encounter. And even when he managed to get a blow in, it never penetrated the thick plate mail; he must have reinforced it.

After a couple of minutes of fighting to no avail, Kashan was almost too tired to continue. He was limping down, nearly unable to dodge anymore. Roan noticed this, and smiled confidently. His flurry of blows doubled in speed, and Kashan couldn’t take it anymore, ready to finally give up. But before Roan could make the final hit, a scimitar suddenly protruded through his forehead, and Kaiser appeared behind him, almost as exhausted as Kashan.

Strangely, Roan didn’t die.

“You fool! You cannot kill me! No one can!” Roan barked at him.

A look of dismay and belief came over Kashan; he was right, his armor was too thick and he was too fast and strong. A look of understanding, however, came over Kaiser.

“The Shape-shifter! Kashan, he’s the Shape-shifter! Hit him where his staff is!”

Kaiser gasped as Roan, who was Krown the Shape-shifter, turned around and put his hands around his neck, nearly shattering the bones there.

It was only then that Kashan noticed the symbol on Roan’s plate body was the same as the one on the staff he had seen only yesterday.

“Kashan…Hurry…” Kaiser managed to gasp. His face was turning light pink, his eyes were bulging, and his breath was short. Krown held him in an iron grip, and he was dying.

Kashan summoned what strength he had left, and jabbed at Krown’s back, at the same height that his chest was. He felt an unusual surge of strength go through him as he hit Krown, and his strikes increased in speed until his hands were merely a blur of red.

He managed to pierce his armor after a couple of seconds of jabbing. Roan, or Krown, let out an agonizing scream, as he had back in Edgeville, only this time the moths didn’t fly away, but dropped to the floor. One other thing was different from last time as well; he didn’t disappear, but a different being stood there instead of him.

It was a gnome.

Chapter 10 - A Joining Dwarf

He was small, even by gnome standards, wearing the traditional gnome clothes; a green, pointy hat, green pants, and a brown shirt. He was shaking, clutching a staff at least three times as big as himself; the top of it had many holes, shredded nearly to bits.

“Hah! It’s a shorty! A short shorty, even!” Toin roared laughing.

“A gnome? The Shape-Shifter’s a gnome?” Arya said, surprised.

Kaiser, who had fallen to the floor, coughed slightly and clutched as his neck in pain. Yet he put his hand palm-out to Kashan, a signal to stop.

“Wait… don’t… kill him… I’ll… do it.” He gasped, barely able to speak, let alone breathe.

After nearly half a minute, he was finally able to stand up, though with much difficulty. He held his right hand close to his chest, grimacing in pain, and his back was bent in an unnatural position due to the wound there.

“I’ll take care of him… I need revenge. This is the ******* that killed my parents, even though he may be small.”

Timier took up his scimitar, which was still on the ground where he had fallen, and handed it to him. Kaiser took it without looking back, his eyes glued on the little gnome that cowered in fear in front of all those tall humans and the dwarf

Kaiser stood before him, scimitar raised, ready to strike. The gnome was wide eyed, his eyes describing pure fear.

“No. I won*t kill him. Enough lives have been taken by his account, and he’s harmless without his staff,” Kaiser decided, his face stern, not showing any feelings.

“Kaiser, are you sure? We probably won’t get another chance at him if you change your mind,” Timier asked him.

“Yes, I’m sure. Let him go, guys.”

The gnome didn’* wait for anything, but jolted past Kashan and out the door, still clutching the wrecked staff. Kaiser wavered, and then fell onto Timier, who had jumped towards him when the gnome ran.

“Kashan, now we really need to hurry; the blood loss is taking its toll on him,” Timier urged Kashan.

“All right, let’s go then,” Kashan conceded.

Kashan took Kaiser, who was now unconscious, on his shoulders and started walking. On their way to Varrock, Kashan noticed Toin was walking with them.

“We appreciate your part in the fight, Toin, but we can handle ourselves now, you can keep… drinking, or what you were doing there,” Kashan said gently.

“Are you joking? I go where the action is, and it most certainly is with you lot,” Toin replied laughing.

“Of course you can come with us. The more the better,” Arya replied smiling, before Kashan could interject.

Kashan sighed deeply. “Well, I guess it’s all right.”

When they were about half way to Varrock, Kashan asked Toin about his ax.

“Like I said, this is Orodring, the Demolisher. I made it myself a few years back. I’m versatile, you see. My father is Doric, the smith. He taught me everything he knows about smithing, and I taught myself something a little extra.

“This,” he gently padded on his ax, “Is my masterpiece. I’m also an enchanter. I put little, or big, spells, and extra capabilities on certain weapons or armor. Talk about a fortune on runes when I enchanted this beauty. Anyways, when I was going to sell it, I just couldn’t. It was a part of me. So I went adventuring, constantly following any action.”

“Really? Could you enchant my staff?” Timier asked, very intrigued with the enchanting part; enchanters were very rarely found; it was a nearly forgotten art.

“Or my bow?” Arya added just as excitedly.

“No, unfortunately, I can’t. Enchanting hasn’t all but died out just because; the runes needed are out of the picture many, I would need thousands of cosmic runes, and thousands of other runes, depending on the nature of the enchantment.

Just to give you an idea of how many I’d need, for the fire on Orodring, it took 7000 fire runes, 7000 cosmic runes, 5000 chaos runes and 4000 death runes. Unless you have runes galore, enchanting your weapons is impossible.”

Timier seemed deep in thought considering this, while Arya seemed very disappointed. Kashan didn’t seem to care at all, simply ignored this talk of enchanting.

“When you continuously cast magic for years, you learn to stockpile runes, just in case,” Timier said smiling. “I’m sure I have the necessary runes in my bank,” He continued gleefully.

“Good thing, it’ll be good being able to enchant again,” Toin replied while cracking his knuckles.

When they reached Varrock, the gate was closed, and there were almost twice as many guards defending it then usual. Many of them were running up and down the wall, in a seemingly disorganized fashion, until a commander shouted orders to his men; then most of them ran up towards the north gate.

“Ahoy there! What’s going on?” Kashan yelled to a guard standing on the

The reply came instantly.

“Varrock is at war! Zamorak’s army is attacking us from the Wilderness!”

Chapter 11 - Varrock at war

“A war?” Toin said, his voice barely more then a whisper; obvious shock in his face.

“War? This may be the reason the balance has shifted!” Timier excitedly suggested to Kashan, but then a dull face came on him. “Then that means this is no small attack…”

“Let us into the city, our friend needs healing!” Kashan shouted to the guard.

“I can’t, King’s Orders. No one goes into the city without a special authorization,” He replied.

Toin muttered a curse under his breath while Kashan yelled back.

“Is there no way we can-” he started, but was cut off by another guard, this one with three little four-arm-stars on his shoulder plates.

“Hang on, I recognize the dwarf. Let them in,” he said to the other guard, who shouted to yet other guards standing by the gate instead of the wall to let them in.

When they were inside the city, the guard that had ordered them to be let in approached Toin.

“It is good to see you again, my friend, though I wish it were under better circumstances. I am afraid we cannot rejoice in a drinking contest quite yet, for war preparations are under way.”

“That time will come, Horas, but until then could you lead us to the doctor, and explain to me, and my friends, what this war talk is all about?” Toin asked curiously.

*The doctor is in the house south of the apothecary. Go south when you reach the first street from here, then slightly east. His house should be on your right hand side. As for the war, I believe you should speak to the King. Here, take this scroll. Show it to the guards outside the palace and the planning room, this will get you in.”

“All right. Hopefully I will see you again, preferably before AND after the battle,” Toin said to Horas and bowed before they hurried to the doctor with Kaiser.

When they entered the doctor’s house, they saw a female elf, lying on a big bed, barely conscious. She had a big **** in her side. She was short, for an elf, but almost 5’11.

Her hair was blonde, and her face features soft, like most elves. She was clutching a dagger in her left hand, her hand cramping, refusing to let go of it.

“Why, oh why do you always get into a fight with the barbarians at the bar? You’re becoming a full time job for me!” the doctor asked her, but forgot to listen to the answer when he saw Kashan coming in with Kaiser on his shoulders.

“Good lord, what on earth were you doing?!” the doctor exclaimed when he saw the wound on Kaiser’s back and arm. “You adventurers are going to be the death of me!” he continued, and then gestured for Kashan to put him on another bed next to the one the elf lay in.

The doctor was a kind looking man of around forty-five years old. His hair was beginning to get grey, though it still held most of its former blonde color. He was wearing a bright, blue shirt, and brown, shaggy pants.

As he was jumping from bed to bed, to care for both Kaiser and the elf, he said to
Kashan and the others, who were standing in the doorway that they should go. This would take a while.

“You can visit him tomorrow, if everything goes well,” he promised, and with that, they went out, and walked towards the palace.

When they reached the palace, the guards stopped them, as Horas had said, but stepped back after Toin had shown them the scroll. The same thing happened in front of the planning room, which they had found through careful directions of other guards, but they got in.

King Roald was bowing over some maps on a table, along with three men, a mage, an archer, and a warrior. They were all very tall, each clad in the best armor of their own combat tactics.

The mage was dressed in robes of an elegantly woven cloth, reinforced and augmented with metal links that conducted magic energy from optimal points. A Saradomin god cape hung around his shoulders, falling elegantly down to the floor.

In his right hand he held a strangely caved staff of dark wood, decaying, yet still possessed of an incredible power. He held a white book in his left hand, the star of Saradomin embossed on the cover. On a finger of the same hand he wore a ring; gold, with a strange design on the top.

The archer was clad in thick black leather armor, sporting various spikes at every point. A green hat with a small white feather lay perched on his head, and he wore a cape that seemed to move on its own; a fire cape. In his right hand, he held a crystal bow, as Kaiser had, and on his left he had an archer ring, something akin to the one the mage wore. His feet were sheathed in boots the same color as his hat, and he wore flexible gauntlets on his hands.

The warrior was perhaps the most threatening of the three, completely covered in a grayish-green armor with spikes at various points. In his right hand he held a long whip, curled up at the moment, and a dragon-metal shield in his left. On his right index finger, he had a warrior ring. His feet rested in runite boots, and extremely resilient gauntlets the same color as his armor covered his hands. Each of the men had a fury amulet around their necks.

King Roald seemed like a child among the fighters, dressed simply with a red shirt, white trousers, and a not-so-elegant crown. They were all bowing over a table filled with some maps. King Roald’s face was dim, but when he noticed Kashan and the others, he turned to them, his face suddenly illuminated.

“Ah, you must be the scouts I sent for from Lumbridge!” he said. “I need you to go the Wilderness and see if you can’t find out exactly how many we’re facing.”

“Sorry sir, be we aren’t the scouts. We come from Edgeville. Could you inform us as to what has happened? We weren’t aware of any war,* Kashan spoke quickly, hoping none of them would remember nobody was supposed to enter the city.

The King sighed, and then answered.
