Blood sputtered from the wolf’s side as it flew backwards from the impact; the knife’s edge had dug into the left side of its chest and struck one of its lungs due to the speed at which it had been thrown. It cried out in a fury and tried to stand, but it only drifted in the air and stumbled upon the grass before dropping atop the knife, driving it deeper.

A flash of white caught Maxwell’s eye and he drew his shield from his back.

Ten teeth were shattered from the blow, and the wolf was tossed a good seven feet by the impact. Anthoni, though, did not see the second of the foul beasts charge from the wood and go after his arm; its teeth sank into his flesh and tore through the fragile covering. Quickly, Anthoni smashed his fist into the eye of the wolf and sent it rearing back in confusion.

Maxwell stared into the eyes of the third wolf, not caring about the second as it was thoroughly disarmed with the forceful removal of its teeth. It had gone over to its companion, which was now laboring with every breath, and touched it with its snout; it was dying from the blade within.

Calling the others over, the wolves began to help the other to its feet. The blood had slowed now, thanks to a clot that had formed, but the knife remained intact. Still, while the two assisted, the third stood motionless, eying the two adventurers with a deadly message emitting from its depths.

“Hurry,” Anthoni said hastily as he grabbed the horse’s reins from the shade. “We have to leave before they regain control of their emotions and come for us. That one shall be but a distraction.”

Maxwell nodded and grabbed Anthoni’s weapons off the ground, handing them to him before turning. With the wolves caught up in their feast, the path had opened up in front of them; but they did not notice the weight that had been lifted free from their horse.

Jacob pushed down on the stake with his foot, driving it further and further into the ground. He had spent a good hour pitching the camp, and Landon proved to be of little use. His advisor training wasn’t useful in the outskirts of Revenske, and Landon had accepted it; he was merely sitting on a rock, reading a small book he had picked up before departure.

“So,” Jacob gasped, “what’s the story?”

Landon looked up and asked, “Hm?”

“The book: what’s it’s name?”

“Ah, yes: this.” He pointed to the book. “This is the Legend of Verintide.”

“It sounds pretty boring,” Jacob replied flatly as he drove in the final stake. Grabbing the sack he had carried with him, he lifted out several blankets and tossed them inside. He then looked up and saw the moon staring back, so he looked over at the fire they had built before laying a second set of blankets beside it.

Landon looked on inquisitively. “You’re sleeping outside?”

“Mm,” Jacob replied. “A man of such status shouldn’t be made to sleep with the lower class.” Jacob made a face as he mocked the royalty Landon represented and sat down on the blankets, which were colored a deep violet.

“Oh, don’t be like that,” the elder man replied. He didn't wait for a reply and merely went on looking at the tent; then he asked, “Do you have the food stored in there?”

“Yes. Why?”

“Look at me, boy: I’m old and fat. It's natural for me to need food throughout the night.” Landon smirked as he degraded himself in front of his companion.

Jacob returned his smile with a frail laugh before glancing up into the night sky. Stars fluttered beautifully, dragging him out of his mortal world with their eternal gaze. The moon’s light eloquently accompanied their presence, giving off the thought that nothing could disturb them. Driven by the flickering light, Jacob started to doze off, watching them dance in the darkened sky.

A shooting star broke through the formation, driving past the moon and across the night sky.

“I don’t understand… it should be here. All sources point to this one place, this one year.”

Korinth Hidal had been in the same position for over five hours now, burning through the books of the royal library in an attempt to find more information on Seilo; it had granted little reward than expected.

Flustered, Korinth reached for another book and read aloud, “’In the First Age, wizards all over the land created a force capable of powers unimaginable by mortal man. It was supposed to create an era of peace, but then it fell into the wrong hands. Wars erupted all over the land; men began to fight with their neighbor; all was thrown into a sense of confusion and hatred. Then, in an attempt to seal away the legend of Seilo, they hid it away….’” She was speechless.

Taking a deep breath, she continued, “’…in the land of Moraisho. Each with their own abilities, they combined their efforts to seal it in an everlasting tomb. A strike of flame, a rush of wind, a wave of water, a blast of earth: the four elements were used to destroy that which they had created. Then, in a fit of panic, they created a seal that would only open if all conditions were met. These -'" She hesitated. "It just ends there?!” she asked in a state of panic.

Turning the pages, she noticed that several had been ripped free of the binding, signaling the fact that someone else knew of the dreaded power, and its location. “They can… find it, and release it,” she said in a daze.

Leaning back in her chair, she lifted her glasses and tossed them on the table. Korinth ran her hands through her hair and took a deep breath before looking back at he book. ‘Magic’s qualities have been lost for years,’ she said in awe. Realizing what had happened, she read the name of the book's author out loud:

“Tiulo Grendage; born in the Seventh Age in…” she gulped. “Jasquel.”
