“Ah, do they still call me that at the castle? Or have I been unfairly stripped of my rank like the money has been stripped from my people?” His voice was firm and sarcastic, urging Korinth to try and calm him.

Korinth was obviously uncomfortable as her eyes fell to the ground, only to be rescued from her helpless state by the stern voice of Maxwell. “Anthoni, we cannot be so harsh to judge her; she is but working under his rule, not necessarily knowing of what he has done to us. I believe we should not be so quick to take offense.”

Maxwell finished his statement, and Anthoni nodded in agreement. “My apologies, Korinth, if I may call you such. It has been a long time since we have heard anything of the king, but we are no longer moving towards him.” He glanced at Maxwell, who was watching the river. “I trust Maxwell here has told you of what we are doing?”

“Ah, but he has not." Korinth smiled playfully and gave a soft laugh.

“I see," Anthoni murmured. “Well, we best be off then. I doubt you have any knowledge of what we seek."

"I have no knowledge of it, of course, if you do not tell me what it is. I am the librarian, or scholar, for the king, and have learned much of the land’s secrets. Maybe I can help you?”

“This story may seem unfit, possibly troubled, but I assure you it is true.”

Korinth laughed again and replied, “I have heard much in the last few days that seems to be ludicrous or insane, but I do not discount it, if the evidence is present.”

“Well then,” the older man began. “I shall tell you.” He dropped his sword and shield upon the ground and stretched casually. “A wizard appeared in the forest, shining bright, and saved both Maxwell and myself from a giant that had attacked us. It was, in itself, a selfless act, but then we were taken to a place unbeknownst to us and told… things."

"What do you mean?”

Anthoni smirked. “He told us of a legend that has long taken hold of this land: a legend of power, of control. I do not doubt his words, for what had happened to us led me to believe he was, in truth, a good man and there only to assist us. Anyway, he told us that I was selected to find this power and use it for what is right, but I am tormented by this. I am to find those who also seek it, help them as they help me, and then find the power, using it how I see fit.” Pausing, he looked to the sky. “Is this not too much power for man to hold?”

“You say you search for a power?" she asked in a slight daze.

Anthoni nodded and replied, “Tiulo has sent me.”

Korinth’s eyes widened and, exasperated, she exclaimed, “Tiulo? Tiulo Grendage, the wizard? My God, I think this may be it; we are destined for one another!”

Maxwell let out a short laugh and Anthoni glared at him, causing him to stifle it and merely chuckle gently. His elder then turned and replied, “Destined for one another is not what I would say.”

“Don’t be like that,” she commanded, putting a hand on his shoulder. “He has told you to find those that search for it; am I not one who does?"

"What? You…?”

“Of course!” she said quickly. “You did not expect only men to be interested, did you? I am a scholar, and, if the opportunity presents itself, I would like to see things up close, in person, to further my studies.” She tilted her head, slightly confused. “This is not a problem, is it?”

Anthoni blushed and avoided her gaze, replying, “I trust his word, and you are one I must follow if we are to be successful." Turning, he let her arm fall from its resting spot. “Come, then.”

Anthoni picked up his weapons and replaced them into their holding spaces; Maxwell and Korinth followed, but then she suddenly came to a terrible realization.

“My brother!”

“Brother?” Anthoni was baffled by the comment and looked over at Maxwell, who nodded bashfully and moved his gaze to the fallen body, still without movement. Korinth soon appeared at his side and lifted his head into her arms, watching his hair blow softly in a passing breeze.

The two soldiers came up behind her and smiled, crossing their arms as Maxwell mimicked his elder. Both had been stuck together since the E’glethor struck their troop, and had developed a bond that could not be broken with ease; it was a relaxing feeling for Maxwell, to know he was under Anthoni’s command.

Suddenly, the forest was alit with flames as a huge ball of fire exploded from the edge’s barrier, flying into the stream and extinguishing itself in the waters. Behind it, several men, clothed in red robes, filed out and stood in a line: there were seven of them. One, though, took it upon himself to advance even closer and begin the interrogation.

A hood covered his face from view, but the red markings that traveled down his garments symbolized the art of magic; Anthoni and Maxwell saw the engravings and knew that they were powerful, but the extravagant detail persuaded them to look at all but the most important of the clothes. There, right above the heart, was the mark of King Rezod.

“Are you Anthoni of Atiolgo? And is that Drake Hidal of Revenske?”

“Yes… why?”

“By order of those higher than you, you are to be killed.” The man’s head moved to look at Drake’s fallen body. “Drake Hidal, servant under the king of Heldora, goodbye.”

“What?” Anthoni cried out. He swiftly grabbed Korinth and pulled her away from her brother’s body; for just then, a huge ball of fire bled from the man’s palm and engulfed the fallen body of the mercenary, incinerating it within seconds. Korinth was crushed and could not even cry out as she saw he brother be cremated alive; she just looked on.

“Anthoni of Atiolgo: for crimes against the security of Heldora herself, you are to be exterminated. Goodbye.”

The man’s hand rose again, and a blast of red flame plunged forth from its depths. Anthoni could do nothing but look on as the destructive dragon, crafted of pure fire, came for them; it was too much. An explosion erupted as the dragon's thirst for blood was quenched, and the river poured into the newfound hole that was formed in the ground.

~` Chapter Thirteen `~

A blazing fire crackled loudly behind the group, eating away at its prey, its victims. Its insatiable wrath had not been completed with but one assault, and it was determined to ravage for even longer, even to the point where nothing would survive. Started by a mortal’s hand, the newfound being would not stop for but his creator’s sole wish, but, instead, only for those who had mastered its ultimate persona: the art of flame.

Anthoni’s blade swept the air as it moved to his hip and stood erect, standing firm in his hand as he watched his enemies with a vicious vigor. An immortal beast had been cast from the man’s hand, but had found itself striking only soil as the three adventurers were able to slide out of the way, unharmed, for now. Startled by the movements of them, the closest man stepped forward and held out his hand.

“Anthoni, you have been sentenced to death; do not fight us.”

Sweat dripped from Anthoni’s brow and he heard the nervous mumblings come from Maxwell behind him; he wasn’t ready to deal with men of such unknown strength and had never done so before. There, though, Anthoni was standing between him and the seven men, attempting to shield his two companions from any other attack that would come their way.

“Do you not answer?” the man asked, lowering his palm and clenching it.

Maxwell went to speak, but Anthoni held back his movements with one arm and replied, “I will not surrender to the likes of you, Scark. Your kind has long enough ravaged my city, and, now I know by your actions: Rezod did not merely send you to tax my people, but, also, to kill me if Drake didn't. Am I correct?”

Lifting his hood from atop his head, the man shook his hair from his face. Long and tinted red, it fell just below his eyes, but not any further, accompanying his light moustache and large scar the was etched diagonally across his face. Staring at Anthoni, he revealed two darkened eyes, colors undetermined, with what seemed to be hidden intent, malicious intent.

“Drake? I did not know he was out to kill you, Anthoni.” He paused and swirled his hand in the air, demonstrating his abilities as he created a small flare right below his arm; it was majestic, yet deadly. “I have more important matter to deal with than a lowly mercenary and yourself.”

“But then why did you come?”

Scark laughed and then glanced back at his men, signaling them to move into the forest and leave them; they did so without a word. Turning back to Anthoni and the others, he replied in a mocking tone. “To merely see you, great General Anthoni. Your legacy as a traitor has already been etched in stone, as obvious everywhere in the land. They say that you struck out against the king for your own purposes, you know; they say you’ve gone mad with power. I, though, came for a different reason.”

Anthoni scowled and his eyes fell to the ground. “And it is?”

“It has come to my attention that a new force has appeared in our land, controlling its very essence and causing unnatural occurrences. Of course, I, needing such a thing, have come looking for it, but have garnered little knowledge on he subject." Scark’s eyes narrowed and his view fell onto the girl, still in awe at what had occurred, and he said, “She, though… I have heard great things about her. She is Korinth, scholar to the king and one of the greatest minds in all of Heldora. A perfect fit, I must say.”

Lightening his stance, the sword jutted out at a higher angle now and Anthoni repositioned himself, putting both hands on the hilt of his blade. “What are you talking about? The power, I know of, but what does this girl have to do with it?”
