~` Chapter Twelve `~

Brexton’s image flashed before them in an instant, making its way over to the windows and throwing open the blinds, covering the room in the day’s light. It was less than impressive: cobwebs sprung from every corner while dust littered the floor, and the furniture, truthfully, was scarce. Both men were surprised to find the home to be but one room.

A bed was bare of its sheets, while a small table sat in the center of the home, square yet firm. It was all natural, and Jacob could tell that he had not ventured out in quite some time, given the status of the lowly abode. The entire place held an unnatural feel, as if something dark had come upon it, forcing those who wished to stay away with its malicious touch; it was perplexing and discouraging, but the young knight knew they had to press forth.

Brexton, clothed in a dark coat as suggested by Randol, moved silently, avoiding their gaze as he pulled out three chairs from their resting places beneath the tabletop and motioned for them to sit, extending his bony hand. He, too, made his way to a standstill and placed one hand on the table, the other on his chin, studying the two newcomers as they made themselves at home. Watching them, he wondered of what they needed, what Rezod needed, and why they had turned to him.

“So, what do you need?” he asked firmly, not taking his eyes off of Landon.

The advisor shuffled uneasily at the unending look and replied, “Rezod, and the entire land of Heldora, requires your assistance, Brexton.”

“Don’t give me that.” His eyes narrowed. “I’ve worked with the king before and know his games: the country needs me? I doubt that. Rezod needs me to fulfill something for him, acquire him some type of gift. The only thing is…” he muttered. “What is it?”

“The king has changed since you last saw him, Brexton.”

“Changed?”

“He is more trusting of his subjects. As you see, he sent Jacob and myself to help him instead of someone more qualified, or…” he trailed off.

Brexton chuckled and flipped his head back, removing the hood that shadowed his face. His green eyes stared down at the table and his blackened hair, once again, hid his appearance in a matter of moments. "That does not make him changed, Landon.” He tapped on the table a few times, muttering to himself before he spoke again. “He will never change who he is; he is his father, through and through. A tasteless bigot that has no care for another, but solely himself. He sent you? Good. But what for? What do you get out of helping him? I’ll answer you: nothing. He will get what he seeks and you will rise higher in his endless hierarchy.”

“You don’t understand, Brexton. It has been a long time since you have seen him.”

“No! You don’t understand!” His voice rang through the small house and reverberated off of the hollow walls with force. “Whatever he seeks, he seeks for himself. No king wants to help his countrymen; he wants power, glory, all these things that will increase his own view of himself, his ego. Can you represent him knowing this?”

“I represent my land, and, therefore, its king.”

“Blindly following someone is not wise, old man.”

Landon’s hand adjusted his glasses and he sighed. “Are we going to merely debate on the king’s integrity, or will you hear our word, his word?”

“Speak, then; but know I am not keen to assist the ‘lord’.”

“Very well.” Landon sat straight up and looked at Brexton, staring into his eyes that had since attached themselves to his body. “There has come to be a power that is coming through our lands, capable of destroying everything and anything in its wake. The country of Heldora, like all others, shall be affected by the man who finds this item. However, we need your help, as Jacob and I, or whoever else is sent by Rezod, cannot do this alone. You are one of the wisest and deadliest men that has, or had, found favor with the king, and now he - no, we - need you.”

Brexton found himself looking at the ceiling, fingering the amulet around his neck mindlessly and without purpose. The top of his house had a rounded tip, and, in turn, made a circular portal that seemed to never end; it was the perfect distracter, the perfect assistant, when a decision had to be made. Its careful motions soothed Brexton, and allowed to consider all things, not only those that came to his mind at once.

“Tell me more.”

“What?”

“The power: tell me more about it.”

Jacob interrupted. “That is all we know as of now."

"So, the king expects me, with limited knowledge, to go out and find this object? As if by chance? No, more must be learned before we can truly go forth to ‘save’ this land, as he puts it.” He paused. “What does he want me to do first?”

“He wishes to meet with you.”

Their host laughed in a mocking tone as he stood in a violent rush. “Never. The king has long since lost my trust, my respect; I shall not leave my home to see him, for I will only leave if it is imperative that I must do so. It is very rare, though: one, if I am needing food or drink, two, if I am needed in town for official business, and three, if my country, not its king, seeks me out.”

“So, you will not help us?"

"I will not help you, but Heldora herself if the time comes. Information is needed before I can continue.”

“Rezod has people working on the issue, Brexton.”

“Bring me the books, or I will not go. I cannot abandon my city for the sole purpose of what may be a wild goose chase, can I? No, I will not, I cannot; for it is my duty to stay here and protect those I care for.”

Landon stood and began to respond, but an explosion bled from the distance, along with shrieks and cries from those in the city of Veskile. Screams of fear emitted from the depths of the small area, and a dark mist rose from the blast’s origin: the river. Immediately, Brexton moved to the corner of his home and grabbed a long, pointed staff, muttering a few words.

The air swirled before the two servants of the king, and the three men were pulled into a mixing pool of vast light.

--

Anthoni’s arm darted upwards and sent Drake’s sword plummeting into the river, falling to its depths in a matter of seconds from the weight. The general’s shield then curved into a second direction, and Drake’s chest was ripped from its standing point, sending his body to the ground.

The soldier rolled to his feet and held his shield in one hand, searching for his blade in a mad rush of adrenaline. He had used most of his energy to save himself, and was tiring from the extraneous actions of the battle. Unable to locate his weapon fast enough, though, his eyes moved upwards and caught those of Drake, which were bleeding with rage and intensity.

Drake tossed his shield to the ground and lifted the dagger from the space it had landed, holding it with cruel intent, ready to finish Anthoni, who was defenseless. The two circled one another, staring endlessly, until, finally, Drake plunged into the fray.

The metallic ringing seemed to last for hours as the mercenary’s curved weapons fell upon the defensive material time and time again. Anthoni felt his strength depleting with each strike, though, and he knew he needed to end the fight before he lost it all and, in turn, would surely die.

Marks were made in the shining steel of the shield as Drake’s dagger etched into it forcefully, causing Anthoni to stumbled slightly. In a mad rush, Drake moved his arm upwards to try and come down with a finishing slash, but Anthoni saw his chance and the edge of his shield dug into his foe’s abdomen, making him tumble backwards, clutching his stomach and gasping for air.

Anthoni’s plan was to incapacitate Drake and, hopefully, subdue him long enough to escape, and it worked. Pivoting quickly, the center of his shield came in contact with the top of Drake’s head and sent him falling onto his back like a rock, unconscious and unmoving. A small trickle of blood fell from his mouth, but Anthoni took no worry of it and quickly reclaimed his sword and kicked Drake’s dagger from his hand; it was over, for now.

"Good job, Anthoni!” a voice called from a few yards away.

Turning, Anthoni found Maxwell to be standing alongside the girl, waving at him and signaling a job well done. His mentor let out an awkward smile before he approached them. “Who are you?” he asked without hesitation, studying the girl.

“Do you not know me?” she asked. “My name is Korinth Hidal, servant to the king of Heldora… you, though, must be General Anthoni.”
