Hey. This is the second re-make of the original Black Winds! Since I can no longer edit the posts on the older thread, I decided to re-make the thread... again.
So, this story was originally posted on RSB on July 18, 2006, and was finished on April 18, 2007. It's an insanely long 82,610 words (not including the Epilogue). Don't let that scare you away from reading this story, though... It'll most likely be worth your time. I have certain things set up in these 279 reserves that will lessen the load of this novelistic story on your eyes. :)
There are *240* story posts in this story (that's with the Epilogue). For all you record-chasers out there, that's the number you need to beat! :P

~ A Guide to Reading Black Winds
Alright, so if you're planning to read this but don't have the 4+ hours needed to get through the whole thing in one sitting or the patience or the attention span, here's a little guide to help you.
If you noticed, there are 14 Bliss Bookmarks in the Table of Contents that separate the story into fifteen parts. Also, in the Table of Contents, you'll notice that there are Segment Markers above each piece of the Table. Each tells you which segment of the story that the following parts of the story belong to. For example, S1 (Segment 1) looks like this...
S1
====
7 - 11 -- 1, 2 -- Prologue
12 - 15 -- 2 -- Chapter 1
16 - 20 -- 2 -- Chapter 2
21 - 3 - Bliss Bookmark #1
The segment marker lists all the parts of the story that belong to it right under it. It always ends in a Bliss Bookmark (except for S15, 'cause that's the end of the story), where you can stop reading if you want, or just go on.
I put the Segment Markers there for a reason. You can read a segment a day (advisably, combining segments S14 and S15 together because it finishes the story a little more smoothly). That way, you can finish the entire thing in fifteen (or fourteen) days if you read a segment a day!
Cool, right? :) I hope it makes your reading experience better, 'cause just dragging on through a story isn't very fun.

~+~+~+~+~+~|~ A Record of (arguably) the Longest Single Story on RSB ~|~+~+~+~+~+~
If you're at any point in this novel, whether it be the very beginning, the middle, Chapter 12, or the very end, you're probably wondering why this story is so long.
Well, let me start by saying that when the Prologue was written, it was at around 3:30 AM on a forum that isn't this one. This was before July 18, 2006, when Black Winds was posted for the first time.
Now, the story hasn't changed too much when I switched from my old thread to this one. But if you notice, my chapters gradually get longer and longer until Chapter 12, which doesn't seem to ever end until it finally does at Chapter 13.
I was sort of stubborn on that count; I wanted there to be exactly 13 chapters in this story.
In the course of nine months, my writing style has changed (and so have I, but that's a story for another day). That explains the difference between Chapter 1 and Chapter 8, and the difference between Chapter 8 and Chapter 12. I never expected this story to get past 150 story posts at one point -- but I ended up having nearly 250 by the time it was finally finished!
The sequel is also alive, but not here. It's retired, and I guess if I ever feel like reviving it (or get the demand for it), I'll bring it back.
Speaking of BW2, I want to make it to the point where reading this story is not completely necessary to understand the sequel.
This is mostly due to the insane length (otherwise I'd bother you all to read this before reading BW2 :P ), but it'll make it easier on anyone who's actually *finished* BW1, so remembering all the characters and events is not all that necessary (though it definitely would enhance the experience!).
Did I mention that after this story was completed, authors have chased after its record length, trying to beat it out? I think that's pretty cool...

~ The "Record" Deal
Well, as you might have guessed, there *are* stories who have been or are candidates for beating this story's length. To honor those stories, I'll post their QFCs here along with a little description of the deal concerning the record length.
-- Pyrotechnic, by Lordofdraken (simply known as Draken):
This story is 258 story posts, which would make one think that it had beaten this story's length, but after some careful evaluation, it turned out that I had more words/characters than Draken. It's a great story, and was written a heck of a lot faster than this was -- in three months! :O
Story located at: 49-50-297-5048699

-- War's Finale, by Chuklz (hates that name, would rather be called Chuk)
The newest candidate for the Record Deal, with a length of about 108 story posts and 32,200 words at the time of this edit. Chuk says he'll have 500 story posts and 150,000 words by the time he's done. But like all lengthy tasks, it takes patience and perseverance to get to such an end. Let's see if he can get to 82K first, and then we'll see about 150K.
Story located at: 49-50-675-54807496

Think you can beat the record? Check the info below:

***If you have a *single* story that you think can beat out this one, post on this thread, with a title and/or QFC to your thread. You have to have *at least* 100 story posts on your thread at the time of your notification, and your story must show signs of being as long as around 240 story posts by its ending.***
***Word and character count will be used in the final determination of your story's length, as was done with Draken and Pyrotechnic.***

~|~|~|~|~|~ Prologue: Night of Thieves ~|~|~|~|~|~
"Take cover! Hide your belongings! The Black Arms have come to rob you of all of it!" A man yelled out to the despairing crowd, before a sharp throwing-knife stabbed him straight in the heart causing him to fall onto the ground, leaving only a scared look in his eyes.
It was normal, this time of year, when the rains were their strongest. The Black Arm Gang always looted at night, seeking treasure for their dirty pockets. No one ever dared to pick a fight with them, as that person would just end up a corpse on the bloody floor, cut in so many places it looked like that person went through a human cheese grater.
This night was no different; people running around like mice from cats under a waterfall of water, having little to no hope of living, and the thieves rooting and shouting with gleeful joy as they got what they wanted.
"James! They're coming! Go, before-" Maria was cut off by a huge thunderclap, but James understood her command. In the few years they had been married, they had learned to be able to speak to each other without saying very much. They had survived the raids in the past, but...Maria didn't feel safe anymore, not even with James's strength and his courage. In fact, she could care less for their possessions.
"Maria! I've hid her away! Now all we have to do is hide here... hope they don't come near us this time." James grabbed Maria by the arm and he was face-to-face with her. He could see her pain, her love, everything that brewed in her soul at this very moment... and in his own heart, revenge called like a wolf's call.
"They have to pay... for making us suffer. These thieves think they can just waltz in here and take our belongings... ha! I'll show them..." James's voice began to bubble with rage and thirst for blood, and he strutted over to the sword case and pulled out a fine, crimson sword with a look as if fire itself had smithed the blade.

It was known to RuneScape as the Dragon-Two-Handed-Sword, and it was very expensive, but very powerful.
James stayed close to Maria. "If they take us, they're not taking us without a fight." he readied his sword for the nearest hoodlum that tried to attack.
"Come on, maggot! We got peas to steal from!" Savlon spat at the young thief behind. Savlon was the head thief, besides Katrine. He was also very rugged and tough, standing at least 6 feet high, with messy black hair and a stench bad enough to kill a Giant Rat. Savlon was more the brawns of any operation the Gang did, but he could care less, as long as he got to smash a few skulls in, spill some blood, and leave the day with some treasure.
"I said, come on, maggot! 'Fore I decide to knock that speck you call a head offa your shoulders!"
"Alright... I'm coming..." this thief was only a fresh recruit, barely past the training. His blonde, spiky hair almost turned brown in the right light, and he was skinny and frail, as was his voice. He didn't know why he had to be paired with Savlon, but it was orders, so he couldn't refuse.
The two thieves stood in the middle of the southern street of Varrock, waiting in the rain, looking for a house to thieve from.
"I say... that one! Behind the bar! C'mon, maggot, les' strike some fear an' death, shall we?"
"Yeah... alright." the thief sounded as if he didn't really want to be there, like he wished he was somewhere else, or somebody else.
"They're coming! They're coming, James, oh, they're coming!" Maria'* voice began to crack and she began to weep bitterly.
"Stay behind me. If I die.....Remember, that I always love you." James turned around and kissed Maria tenderly, but quickly, as the shadows were coming closer.

A barbaric yell was heard from outside, and James yelled his own battle cry and charged outside, only to find a huge thief ready to fight, and a scrawny one who looked like, with his pale face, that he might run off like the coward he truly was.
"Get away, you filthy thieves! You're not welcome here!" James turned his sword towards Savlon.
"Ha, even if you DO own a Dragon Double, you think you can take me down that easily? Feel this, whelp!" Savlon pulled out a Crystal Bow, nicked an arrow to the crystal string, and let the magical arrow fly at James, but he rolled out of the way and the arrow missed its target.
Savlon kept firing shots at James, but his speed proved to be too much for Savlon's ranging. Savlon shoved the young thief out of the way and yelled,
"If you're not going to help me kill this wimp, get outta the way!"
Savlon threw the Crystal Bow to the side and grabbed a Dragon Battle Axe from his pack. He and James charged at each other, and their blades met with harsh impact, sending the two back a few inches. James was the first to reply, sending a quick upward slash at Savlon's arms, and Savlon matched the blow by heaving his axe horizontally to parry the attack. Savlon threw another horizontal slash aimed for James's legs, but James stepped back just in time to dodge the axe.
"Oh, what's wrong? Afraid to fight like a man, huh??" Savlon shouted at James.
"I'll show you who's the man here..." whispered James as he initated another swift charging attack at Savlon's chest. He brought the sword down with all his might, and Salvon tried to parry the attack, but it threw him off balance and he staggered. He saw a stream of blood flow from his hand.
"Now! Powerstab!" James said as the two-handed sword began to glow and he readied for a thrust through Savlon.

"Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!" Savlon's axe shone with a deadly blood-red tinge, and before James could initiate the thrust attack and finish off Savlon, his axe, moving with the speed of a falcon and the rage of a lion, had cut James's head clean off from his shoulders, in one fatal slash. The sword remained in his hands, his body started to fall to the ground, and Savlon began to laugh maniacally as the sword'* blunt end kept the body up like a stand. Savlon took his axe and rushed it through the torso splitting it further, causing even more blood to spill out on the ground. He walked on the body, and picked up James's head, which laid in a puddle of sticky blood.
"Ahhhhh, another one for my room... now... to the house... Maggot! Hold the head! I've gotta see what this place has worth keeping..." Savlon tossed the still bloody head of James to the young thief.
"Aaah!" he shrieked as he caught the head.
Savlon bust down the door to the house. Inside was a woman, but she was already dead, lying on the fur carpet with a sword sticking out of her back. Apparently, that man he just killed was her husband, and she would rather kill herself than be killed by Savlon. Figures, he thought. He took his pack, and started to grab various valuable objects around the house, including some pictures of James and Maria, all their silverware, and even Maria'* wedding ring. As for the weapons, he would just hold what he could and let the assistant carry the rest.
Five minutes later, Savlon was done. The young thief was standing in the house, examining what had been taken. Savlon went out the doorway, but the young thief stayed for a moment. He thought he heard something moving in the back...He wanted to get closer, but Savlon boomed from the front of the house,
"C'mon lackey! We gotta git outta here so we can drop off the loot!"
"I'm coming!" the young thief shouted.
