“It’s over,” he sputtered, turning to face me, “finish me off.”
I sheathed my sword as Yamabushi fell to his knees.
“I have no desire to kill you.” I replied. Yamabushi looked up at me.
“You must kill me. You have won, I deserve death.”
“If I kill you, I am no better than the Veritus Vos Liberit. Break free from the chains of your master, help me take him down, and end this once and for all.”
“I cannot. You don’t understand.”
I held out my hand to Yamabushi to help him to his feet. But much more than that, it was a peace offering. He took it, and I pulled him up.
“Make me understand,” I said, heading towards Rose, Lydia, Justin and Kzahar. Lydia had begun to stir.
“Like I said, I was saved by The Protagonist years ago from certain death. What I didn’t tell you was that I had my daughter with me at the time. After the battle, The Protagonist took my daughter, and said that if I didn’t do everything he said, he would kill her. I have been fighting for her freedom ever since. I haven’t seen her in years. She would be sixteen now.”
I gave Lydia a little shake, and she opened her eyes.
“Then we shall find him, and your daughter. We shall kill him, finish off this sick cult and reunite you with your daughter.”
Lydia sat up. “What’s going on?” she asked sleepily. I pointed to Yamabushi and Lydia understood.
“Why have you awoken so quickly?” Yamabushi asked, surprised at Lydia.
“I’m an expert alchemist. Years of tasting raw ingredients to find out their effects have left me with a certain resistance to poisons and toxins. Why are you not dead?”
“Relax,” I said to her, “he’s on our side now.”
“Mmm okay. Oh my, you’ve been cut quite bad. Look at your chest.”
“I know, don’t worry about that, I need you to turn your attention to Rose for me. You said you could give her some medical attention with some local ingredients. Could you try for me?”
Lydia slowly stood up, still groggy from the knock out poison.
