Chapter 16: Time is Running Out
Lieutenant Grip “Fang” Harker gazed at the resolutely empty azure sky with a grimace on his face. He turned back to the three of his men watching with him.
“Tell the mage and his friend the Gno*k hot rod that their planes still havn’t arrived. And before they ask, yes the beacon** working perfectly,” he said in his light, bantering tone.
His men smiled as he insulted their comrades. They knew it was his way of keeping up their morale, and that he did*’t mean a word of it.
One of them turned around and walked off towards the narrow walkway giving access to the small ledge where they had placed their transponder beacon.
It had been almost a month since Fang and his men had arrived. Since then they had set up camp in a clearing in an overgrown crater. This crater lay in the shadow of a small cluster of steep cliffs and bluffs. They had then waited for three weeks before the Zamorakian mage and his henchmen had arrived, homing in on their portable beacon.
Over the next few days, a further four planes had arrived, carrying another 20 men. These had immediately called in to their captain, a grim and reserved woman named Selvaria Solotov.
But according to the mage, they still had another ten men coming, and time was running out, but he refused to move without them.
Fang sighed bitterly.
“Come on lads; let’s get back to the camp. It’s time some of those trumped-up paratroopers had their turn doing some of the things associated with soldiery they think is beneath them,” he said, turning back to the path leading to the camp.

The three of them walked down the narrow path towards the camp. It was only wide enough for one person, and in some places it simply fell away in piles of rock and clouds of dust.
They finally reached the bottom of the arduous path and passed between the pair of trees lashed together which marked the path to the camp. The path from here was quite wide, and although it had been partially overgrown, even in only a month’s time, it was easy to follow.
The three of them turned the last corner, and saw the young private Fang had sent off before talking to the mage and Selvaria, both of whom were talking animatedly in the shade of the transport hidden at the bottom of the crater.
Around them the camp was bustling with activity. Men were packing crates with ammunition, tents and the thousand and one items needed to run a camp. These crates were then being packed into the small hold of the transport and the smaller holds of the Nightwing’s planes.
Fang walked over to Selvaria and the mage.
“What’s happening, oh revered leaders?” he asked as he came within talking range.
“We’re abandoning the camp. All the equipment is being stored in the holds and all men are getting ready for battle,* Selvaria said in her course voice.
“I can see that you idiot. What I should have asked for your simple brain to comprehend is, are we finally moving on? After all you’re precious men havn’t arrived yet,” he replied in his usual bantering tone.
“I’ve decided that we don’t have enough time left to wait for them. We need to do it now,* the mage said quietly, in a dangerous tone.
“What’s it that you have to do? And why are you so obsessed with time?” Fang asked.
“Neither of those questions are of importance to you. Now get out of my sight and get those planes loaded,” the mage said with a note of finality in his harsh voice.
Fang sighed angrily and turned his back on the two of them.

In the massive sprawling metropolis of Ockvarr, the capital city of the Empire of ScapeRune, thousands of men were getting ready for combat. They were marching through the streets by the hundred, all wearing the official uniform of dark red body armour trimmed with some type of scarlet metal.
Just outside the massive city was a huge swarm of soldiers, hundred upon hundreds of thousands of them, arrayed round the large rift in the material realm which gave access to the world of Runescape.
Standing just in front of this huge horde was an ancient man, wearing a scarlet and gold robe and bearing a staff of the same red metal as the trim on the soldiers armour.
The man stood up onto a small stage made of wood. Instantly, the horde fell silent.
“Men!” he cried, his voice carrying through the minds of the men as much as their ears, “Today we shall join our brethren fighting these weakling barbarians from the pitiful world of Runescape. We shall slaughter them like pigs! Their cities shall fall like wheat to a scythe! For 10000 years we have grown in power. We have long been unified under the banner of The Empty Lord, and under his benevolent guidance we have grown strong. They are divided and weak, while we are unified and strong. We outnumber them atleast a hundred to one! Now, fight! Fight for ScapeRune! Fight for the Empire! Fight for the Empty Lord!”
“For the Empty Lord!” cried the thousands of regiments arrayed before him.
And with that, the man stepped through the pulsating portal before him.
Runescapes time was almost up.

Chapter 17: Jailbreak
The ten man patrol walked quietly through the dark undergrowth, weapons up, ready for a sudden attack.
Suddenly, one man, the leader, raised his right hand, and his men formed a small circle. He then spoke quietly into the microphone in his helmet.
“Captain, there’s no sign of movement in our area. Moving on to sector four.”
“Very good Sergeant. Keep your eyes peeled, the Colonel thinks there’s a good chance that someone will be attacking sometime soon,” said a voice over his radio.
“Very well captain. Over and out.”
From barely twenty metres away Fang watched this almost silent exchange, knowing that immediately after, the Sergeant would turn to his men to issue orders, and their attention would be distracted.
Sure enough, several second later, the sergeant turned around.
Immediately, Fang and his men unleashed a withering barrage of deadly accurate silenced bullets. None of the ScapeRune soldiers had even seen them before they were cut to pieces.
Along with Fang were ten of his men and one of the mages. They were supposed to attack from the North-East, eliminating the sentries as quietly as possible, and then making a very noisy assault on the perimeter.
Immediately after this, his other twenty men, along with two of the mages were supposed to attack from the South, again making as much noise as possible.
In the confusion following this, when the two hundred or so men in the camp were waking up and rushing for their weapons, the mages leader, and his last accomplice, would attack with Selvaria and her men, dropping out of the Nightwings planes and attacking the base in a ring around the main command. They would then tighten the ring, trapping the people inside and killing those outside with explosives dropped from the ships.
So far it was going well. Both forces of TRS’s were in position, and were just waiting for the call to begin.

The jet-black Nightwing planes rode the air currents on their back-swept wings, their silenced engines making no noise in the stillness of the jungle night.
Inside the plane at the front of the group the two mages were refusing to wear the parachutes.
“I have said on numerous occasions Selvaria, I do not trust those things. Me and Zadek will halt ourselves before we hit the ground, don’t you worry,” the head mage said in his crackly voice. His silver eyes were beginning to glow with the fierce fire that overcame him when he was angry.
“Suit yourselves, after all, it’s your neck,” Selevaria said, shrugging.
“Captain Selvaria, we are over the drop zone,” said a voice from the cockpit. “Please be to drop in three minutes.”
“Yes pilot,” Selvaria said, turning to the radio on her wrist.
“Unit one, this is a go. Unit two, you have 1 minute to be ready.”
Hurried replies came back from the two units.
She pulled her helmet on, plugging the high-altitude breathing masks tube into her air tanks nozzle. Then she spoke again into her helmet mike, transmitting to every Nightwing soldier.
“Stand by for drop in one minute and 45 seconds.”

Fang and his men burst from cover. The perimeter sentries covering the North-Eastern corner were again cut down by deadly accurate fire, and those behind the low earth barrier were kept down by suppressive fire from the squads only heavy machine gun.
They sprinted forward, keeping low leap-frogging each other so that atleast five people were always laying down light suppressive fire while the others moved.
The low earthen barricade only slowed a little bit. As the first three men reached it, it was blown open in a geyser of earth as the mage used his special powers to great effect.

They were in. Before them they had a little bit of resistance as isolated soldiers attempted to stop their advance. But this small resistance quickly grew as those squads further back from the carnage emerged, ready to kill these attackers without mercy.
One of Fang’s men was killed by a stray bullet right through his eye, making a huge dent in the back of his helmet. Another two were killed by a fragmentation grenade as it went off behind them, shredding them with lethal shards of metal.
But the mage kept most of them safe from the return fire via an invisible shield which slowed the bullets until they were no longer lethal.
35 killed and only three dead, Fang thought. Not bad so far.
Then a huge explosion rocked the earth as a shell hit the ground a short distance from them. Tiny specks of earth scattered all over them, and men screamed as they would burned in the subsequent fire of the incendiary shells.
Immediately Fang began to pull back towards the breach in the perimeter as more shells fell, as per his orders.
As planned, a large number of enemies followed him. Now it was up to Selvaria and her boy scouts to deal with the remaining troops and to do whatever the hell they were meant to do.
***
From the moment they started dropping the bombs it went wrong.
As soon as Selvaria and his men dropped out the X-29 fighter was destroyed in a withering inferno as an RPG blew it out of the sky.
Selvaria watched as atleast three more of the X-29’s were blown out of the sky, one of them before it had even got it’s bomb doors open.
Several more troopers were shot out of the sky, and several more had their parachutes shot off their backs, and they fell screaming to their deaths.
In the space of a few seconds Selvaria guessed that she had lost atleast ten men, and with a force of only thirty men, there was now a gaping hole in the circle.

She and her squad hit the ground with a solid thump, rolling to cushion the soft landing and shrugging the backpack off. Her two other Nightwing soldiers did likewise, immediately searching the area for targets.
Behind her there was a loud crack, as one of her soldiers shot one of the approaching enemies. He was immediately blown in half, the armour piercing shell easily penetrating the ScapeRune soldier’s body armour. The incendiaries inside did their job, and the man disappeared.
Selvaria spoke again into her helmet.
“All units advance forward. Eliminate all enemies to the front. Every twenty metres leave a timed explosive behind you. Make sure you’re out of the are by the time it goes off.”
***
Sheets of flame ripped through the humid night air, casting a baleful light over the fierce battle raging in the destroyed camp.
Selvaria’s men had closed the circle so that it now lay around the central command center. Behind them lay only smoking ashes and burning bodies. Most of the ScapeRune soldiers now lay in charred heaps, either victims of the early bombing raids, cut down with incredibly powerful rifle shots or claimed by the timed bombs left behind the Nightwing squads as they moved forward.
Between the three forces they had killed almost all of the support staff and roughly a hundred soldiers. Most of the rest had escaped into the jungle surrounding the camp, where many were being cut off by Fang’s men. About twenty more were ensconced inside the concrete command structure, protected from the raging flames and most of the Nightwings fire.
At the forefront of the assault Selvaria and the two other members of her command squad were taking cover behind a ruined jeep.
“All units concentrate grenade fire on that door on my mark. 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . Mark,” Selevaria said into her helmet mike.
Immediately, several anti-tank grenades hit the armoured doors. There was a billowing cloud of smoke as the doors buckled, but did not break.

“Mage, can you break down that door?” Selvaria said to the man in red robes behind her.
“I cannot damage them in any way using magic; they must have some sort of protection around it. However, I can break down one of the walls, although it will seriously weaken the structure,” the mage answered. He was the most junior mage of the five mages who had joined the Nightwing.
“We don’t have time to take down the doors. Just make a big enough hole for us to get in,” Selvaria answered.
A frown creased the mages forehead. Then a section of wall just to the left of the gate shattered violently, crushing inwards and scattering them with dirt.
“All units, go, go, GO! Transports get ready for extraction. Give us five minutes,” Selvaria said as she shrugged her rifle onto her shoulder and drew her short fighting sword and overlarge pistol.
“Yes, Captain,” came the reply over her radio.
Behind her, the other surviving 14 Nightwing men put aside their rifles and drew their close range weapons.
They stormed forward, diving through the gap in the wall and arriving in a small guard room leading onto the corridor coming in from the main door. Both of the room’s occupants were already dead, killed by the imploding wall.
They burst through the door into the main corridor. Almost immediately bullets pinged off the steel walls of the narrow corridor.
Behind Selvaria a shotgun boomed, and one off their attackers was blasted off their feet. Selvaria rolled and came up in a crouch, rapidly shooting her special pistol. Both surviving attackers were shot in the head, their faces behind their black helmets blown into a messy pulp.
She heard a groan and turned to see one of her men holding his hand over his thigh. Blood was pouring out of it by the gallon.
“Someone, help him out. Carper, Hawkins, Jake, get down that staircase and contact me if you find anything. The rest of you, follow me.

The three men she named nodded and turned down the staircase to their right. The rest followed her down the dark corridor.
Suddenly a door to her right burst open. She dropped to a crouch and had fired several times before she realised who it was.
It was the head mage. His red cloak billowed behind him, and his eyes burned with the hellish fire that overtook them when he was angry.
He whipped up his arm. The bullets coming towards him flashed with eldritch energy and stopped in mid air.
“I’m sorry I, did*’t realise it was you,” Selvaria said.
“How many others wear red cloaks and have red ayes?” yelled the mage.
Selvaria ignored this and kept on going down the corridor.
There was a burst of fire from her right. The two men behind her were gunned down and a ragged **** was opened in her shoulder.
She ducked into an alcove in a move that probably saved her life. Behind her three of the remaining seven Nightwing soldiers dodged into alcoves like hers.
The other four were blown off their feet as five men came running down the corridor, dragging a sixth man between them. They ignored Selvaria and the mage and dashed up a set of stair just off the main corridor.
“Get that man they were dragging! NOW!* yelled the mage, running up the narrow stairs.
Selvaria and her men followed, snapping off a couple of shots at the fleeing men.
They ran up the steps three at a time. They reached the top and found themselves on the top of the roof on a makeshift helicopter pad.
There was a roar to their left and Selvaria turned to see the last few men jumping onto the large ramp in the back of a large black helicopter.
Behind her one of the Nightwing raised an RPG, aiming it at the fleeing copter.
Only for him to be crash tackled a second later by the Zamorakian mage.
“NO! If you take down that ship you will kill the only chance Runescape has of coming out of this turmoil,” yelled the mage in the soldier’s face.

“Sir! We’re coming up on your position, but we have a signal on an incoming ScapeRune chopper. Permission to terminate?” came a voice over Selvaria’s helmet.
“Permission denied. Let it go, but put a tracking device on it,” Selvaria replied, looking at the Zamorakian mage.
She turned around as she heard the approach of the Nightwing’s transports.
What she saw was a landscape of flames. The entire camp and part of the jungle surrounding it was now ablaze. Of the thirty men that had dropped with her, more than twenty now lay dead.
And for what?
Nothing.
