“I won’t let him escape,” Kzahar said angrily. “I’ll track him as far as it takes. Look, don’t say anything, just let me get this out. I messed up, and I take responsibility for that. I’ll fix it. Four, five days from now, that trail will be cold, and we will have lost him. I’m not letting that happen. If I go now, I can catch him. He’s a fat monarch in the woods. He’s not getting far.” He took a deep breath. “Look, somewhere, we got it all wrong, man. You tried to lead us, and I fought you on that. I’m sorry. What happened in that castle was as far as it goes. We keep doing this, we’ll never get anything done. So I’m removing the problem, all right?
“I don’t have the stomach for what comes next. I killed that Duke in Lumbridge, and I hated it. I can’t hunt down all his blood and execute them. You’ve come to terms with it. I haven’t; I knew it when I killed that man. Now I’m not saying that’s a good thing, or a bad thing. It just is. But I can’t do it. I can kill Issavan, though. So I’m going, and I’ll find him, and by the Gods, I’ll bring his head to you and show you he’s gone, and we can all sleep at night. You…You lead the others, and do what has to be done.”
Maston was silent for a long time, taking all of this in. While he digested the information, Kzahar mounted up on the horse. Finally he looked up at the other man. “Are you absolutely sure? Kzahar, I did*’t mean to drive you away—“
“You did*’t. This is my choice.”
“We should at least talk about –“
“No. I go in there and tell everybody, they’ll try to talk me out of it. I’ve made up my mind.”
“You shouldn’t go alone.”
“I have to do this on my own. I have to pay for my mistakes,” he said firmly. “Maston, I’m sure. Tell them for me, all right? And look out for them. I’m leaving you with all the ladies – and while it’s no secret they can take care of themselves, you have to lead them, you know? You gotta get the job done. There’s a lot of work to be done.”
“We’ll do it. I’ll take care of them.”
“Good.”
