According to legend, demons are as old as the stars themselves, perhaps older. Many were said to remember what the universe had been like in it's early days, when Khaos had ruled supreme. Being both immortal and unable to truly reproduce, every demon is very near to every other in terms of age. As such, words such as “old” and “young” have a different meaning to demons. It does not, as some mortals think, refer to the actual age of the demon. Rather, it was an indicator of how long the demon has been present on the mortal plane.

The longer a demon has presence on the mortal plane, the more of its power it could can into the plane. Likewise, it grows more used to the world of mortals, and learns more sophisticated ways of interacting with that world. And finally, a demon in the mortal plane is likely to gather more souls, thereby increasing it's power.

Therefore, to say that Terrethus was an ancient demon did not imply that it had existed longer than the lesser demons scattered throughout Gielinor. What it did imply was that it had been out of the Void longer. And such was the case.

Terrethus and three other powerful demons had come to Gielinor in the distant past, sometime between the departure of the elder gods, and the arrival of Guthix. In those days, Gielinor was uninhabitable by the mortal races. Acidic rain fell onto the cracked, dusty surface of the planet. Volcanoes erupted on a daily basis, shrouding the sky with clouds of ash as furious winds whipped dust across the face of the planet.

Terrethus and the other demons looked out on this wasteland and saw potential. Each saw itself an emperor of this hostile land, answering to no one, not even the Void King and his Hell Lords.

One by one they arrived and began summoning weaker demons with which they would form their armies. It didn't take long for each of these demon lords to become aware of the others, and so the war began.

The war between the demon lords went on for centuries, territories were seized and lost. Alliances were formed and dissolved. Battles were lost and won. But none of the demons ever was thoroughly defeated. The reason for this was simple, none of the demons wanted to risk its own hold on this world by openly doing battle with one of its equals, and none would dare summon another demon strong enough to take out one of its rivals, lest that subordinate turn traitor.

Due to this, the demons remained in a sort of equilibrium. Each ruled its own territory as a god, whilst plotting to undermine the others. To an observer it might have seemed like this war would continue forever, and so it may have, had not Guthix arrived on Gielinor.

Before Guthix's arrival, the demons had ruled Gielinor like virtual gods. They had grown complacent, and each believed itself invincible. In the centuries of their play war, the demons had all but forgotten that there were beings more powerful than each of them, and thus it was unsurprising that, none paid much attention to the new god. One might speculate that if they had joined together, they could have held firm against Guthix, and that Gielinor would even today be embroiled in their war. Instead, they ignored Guthix and continued their schemes against one another. Due to this, one by one, they easily fell to the new god.

By nature, demons are pure spirits, but to interact effectively with the mortal plane they take on physical form. This can be done either by possessing a mortal or forming a artificial body out of the material of the world. While this allows the demon to interact easily with the mortal world, and resist the influence of more powerful, but non-corporal demons, it is not without its disadvantages. By binding their bodies to physical forms, demons lose the mobility and ethereal qualities of pure spirits. There bodies can be injured in ways their true forms cannot, inhibiting their ability to fight, and worst of all, they may be imprisoned.

Guthix took advantage of this, imprisoning each demons lord into enforced sleep based on what kind of body it bore. Terrethus, who's body had been formed of the resilient stone of the land, found its body became sluggish, and eventually immobile. Furious, it tried to return to spiritual form only to find that it could not; it's body had become imprisoned.

For eons, Terrethus remained in that prison, seething in impotent fury even as, unbeknownst to it, the world around it was blessed with flora and fauna, even as mortals populated that world, even as the god wars raged on above. Thus it had been and thus would it have remained had not some weak god and his followers decided to set Terrethus free.

Terrethus did not care who the god was, nor what he was after. With its freedom came only two desires; vengeance on the god that had sealed it away, and to return to its rightful place as ruler of the world.

True, Terrethus had been shocked to see Gielinor teeming with life. But that shock had quickly given way to glee. For Terrethus had been quick to notice that it was not simply teeming with life, but sentient life. Sentient life meant souls, which Terrethus would consume to increase its own power, eventually ascending over the gods themselves.

With this in mind, Terrethus made its way toward the nearest place that held these mortals; a structure surrounded by water that was crowded by mortals in white armor. Its many mouths smiling sinisterly, Terrethus raised its talon to strike at the mortals running to and fro on the structure's roof, and immediately its head was smashed into the ground.

Steaming with rage, Terrethus picked itself up and looked around for its attacker. It didn't take too long to find the said attacker; a large eagle-like humanoid which hovered high in the sky.

Demons are not mortal creatures, while they can speak in mortal tongues for the benefit of communicating to mortals, they themselves communicate with each other through the mind. Because of this, they are able to quickly gather what a mortal is saying even if they do not understand the exact words used. As such, while the white knights heard only the sound of birds sqawking when the eagle-creature spoke, Terrethus understood the gist of what he was being told; the creature was Kree'arra, a servant of a god of justice and had been sent to rid the world of Terrethus.

Under normal circumstances, Terrethus would've crushed this “servant of a god” where it stood. Unfortunately, Terrethus' powers were over stone and the earth, making it somewhat difficult to quickly dispatch a flying enemy. This did not stop Terrethus for long; the moment the flying creature let its guard slip, Terrethus struck it with speed that seemed incredible given its bulk, knocking the bird-creature to the ground.

It had been Terrethus' intention to slaughter the creature where it landed, and thus he would've done had not a second pest appeared. This one was similar in appearance to the mortals which were standing on the castle walls in a daze, but unlike them, possessed large, blue wings. The knights, upon seeing her, immediately recognized her for an Icyene and fell to their knees, with prayers of thanksgiving on their lips.

Because of this, Terrethus was irate. There were few things that demons detested more than prayers. To make matters worse, this new pest reeked of the Eternal. As a powerful demon, Terrethus could heal its constructed body from almost any attack; the reason Guthix had imprisoned rather than destroyed it. There were only two powers that could do lasting harm to Terrethus; the all-consuming, obliterating power of the Void, and the creating, incorruptible power of the Eternal.

This meant that the new pest, had the ability, however unlikely it was, to harm Terrethus. This in mind, the ancient demon turned its back on the fallen bird-creature and faced its new foe, scanning her for weakness. The weakness was quickly found; this lady was sure of herself... too sure of herself. The same faith that allowed her to call on some sliver of the Eternal's power at the same time caused her to overestimate herself and underestimate her enemy. Terrethus could use this against her, but the cost would be great...

Mentally shrugging the demon decided that this was worth it. Feigning to stumble it opened its defenses to the woman. As Terrethus had expected she immediately called forth a sliver of the Eternal's power in the form of forked lightning. Too late did she realize it was a trap; Terrethus lunged forward, striking at the woman. The power of the Eternal pierced through Terrethus, filling it with searing pain, but this was of little consequence to the demon, he had struck his target, and the woman was sent slamming into one of the city walls, breaking through it and striking the ground hard. There she laid, bloody and dazed, with a broken wing and several cracked ribs.

Terrethus moved toward her, planning to end the miserable creature's existence, when it felt a sharp pain in its leg. It had planned to ignore the pain, but soon after the initial shock felt a powerful numbness it recognized as the power of the Void. Shocked, Terrethus looked down to find another demon, one whose head reached Terrethus' waist. This demon had buried the head of an ax in Terrethus.

Staring down, Terrethus did not move for a few seconds; it was almost unheard of for a creature of the Void and a creature allied with the Eternal to be in league, for the two were diametrically opposed to one another; one sought the ultimate destruction of all that was, the other sought to create and preserve. Indeed Terrethus noted a feeling of reluctance coming from the demon attacker. For a moment, Terrethus wondered about this, then, deciding such a thing didn't matter, it slammed the other demon in the head, causing it to crumple to the ground.

Even as it did so, another creature attacked Terrethus. This one from behind. Turning around to face its new foe, Terrethus saw a large, brutish creature standing behind it. The creature was unarmed, but looked at Terrethus with undisguised battle-lust. Groaning at yet another distraction, Terrethus prepared to deal with this latest annoyance.

Even as Terrethus was annoyed by the appearance of these four challengers, Zaros was beside himself with glee. As he had anticipated, the gods had been forced to recall their generals to contain Terrethus. With a smirk on his shrouded face, the god informed Sliske of this development and urged him to carry out the plan...

Far away from Falador, in a frozen cavern where the god wars still raged, an injured Saradominist knight struggled to prop himself up against the cavern wall. All around him, the battle raged, although, he had noted that the other combatants seemed in high alert, and paused between their swings and parries to look around, their eyes scanning for anyone suspicious. To them, an injured combatant, be he enemy or foe, was of little concern... or at least was until he propped himself up against the wall that bore the symbols of Zamorak, Bandos, Saradomin and Armadyl. As he did that, the fighting halted, and all eyes fell on him.

A few, sharper witted of the warriors, particularly a handful of werewolves and Aviantsie rushed toward the knight. But it was already too late.

Shedding the guise of an injured knight, Sliske revealed his true form to the combatants. As he had anticipated, they stopped, it was only for a moment, but that moment was enough for him to call forth the six barrow brothers, who charged straight into the midst of the battle. The barrow brothers wouldn't be able to hold back the soldiers of the third age for long, but they could hold them long enough for Sliske to accomplish his mission. Producing a small key from his robes, the mahjarrat ignored the battle raging behind him, and quickly unlocked the door in front of him, and held it open. Behind him, he could hear frustrated shouts and curses, but none of this mattered to him.

Before long, a purple streak shot from the open door and barreled into the fray. Behind him, Sliske could hear the screams of the dying as they were butchered. When the screams stopped, a blast of magical energy struck the doors, knocking them off their hinges. Smiling to himself, Siske turned to face Nex.

The general regarded Sliske with an amused expression. They did not exchange words, but nonetheless, a mutual understanding passed between them. Nodding in acknowledgment, Sliske turned back toward the doorway to see soldiers pulling themselves up via grappling hooks. At this Sliske smirked again; the elite soldiers of Zaros' army were finally free of their prison and ready to carry out their lord's will even at the cost of their own lives. Things just keep getting more complicated and the scales seemed to stay very balanced. Odd how you allow this to happen but at the same time dislike Guthix so much. I suppose it keeps everyone guessing as far as the story goes, but it seems to go against what I know of you.

I'm quite glad for an add, I was wondering if we were to ever get one again. I thought you might be lost considering all the games that came out this past month. Glad to see you are still here and are giving us a great story. I can't wait for more. Hard to say what I expect to happen next anymore and even if I did you would make sure it was something else. For the heck of it I'm going to guess that the demon is going to start to turn the tables on the generals, taking advantage of the weaknesses he has been able to note.
